Adam Copeland is getting the opportunity to check an important item off his wrestling bucket list.
During the latest episode of MLP Mayhem, Copeland discussed AEW President Tony Khan allowing him to compete at Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling’s Northern Rising pay-per-view.
Copeland is confirmed for the October 3 event at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located on the grounds of the former Maple Leaf Gardens.
In a video that aired during Wednesday’s MLP Mayhem (see media player below), Copeland praised Khan’s selfless approach to the wrestling business and explained why his appearance for MLP was important to him.
“In terms of doing this show, I’m contracted with AEW, but the beautiful part about Tony Khan and his outlook in terms of pro wrestling is that he wants pro wrestling to flourish,” Copeland said. “AEW and Maple Leaf Pro Wrestling are partners. It’s a partnership that can help wrestling thrive in a place that needs to have wrestling thrive.”
Copeland added that Khan understood the personal significance of him getting the chance to wrestle at the former home of Maple Leaf Gardens before the end of his career.
“He also knew what it means to me and how special this place is to me,” Copeland said. “And I don’t think I was going to be able to retire without a bit of a bee in my bonnet unless I did this. I think this allows me to go, ‘Right.’”
According to Copeland, the wheels were initially put in motion after MLP President Scott D’Amore saw an interview in which Copeland discussed his desire to wrestle at the historic venue.
“The seeds for all of this coming to fruition started with Scott D’Amore seeing an interview that I did where I said, you know, my place, my hallowed ground that I have to perform in before I’m done is Maple Leaf Gardens.”
Before MLP Northern Rising in October, however, Copeland is gearing up for his showdown alongside Christian Cage in their latest AEW World Tag-Team Championship defense against The Young Bucks at the upcoming AEW All In: London pay-per-view on August 30.
