Tony Schiavone says Adam Copeland put the reaction he received at Arena Mexico right up there with one of the biggest moments of his career.
During the latest episode of his What Happened When podcast (see video below), Schiavone reflected on AEW’s recent trip to Arena Mexico and the atmosphere surrounding the event. He specifically recalled reaching out to Copeland after the show to ask where the reception he received ranked among the loudest crowd reactions of his career.
“It’s just I’ve never experienced anything like it. The very next day I sent a text to Adam Copeland. I said, ‘I know you’ve had a long and tremendous career. I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced a pop like that before in your life,” Schiavone said. “Because I’ve never experienced anyone get that reaction anywhere.’”
According to Schiavone, Copeland compared the moment to his memorable WWE Royal Rumble return in 2020, which came nine years after he was forced to retire due to neck issues.
“And he said, ‘It’s probably the best. When I returned to the Royal Rumble’ he didn’t give the year. I don’t know what year he was talking about, ‘I got a pop that was equal to that. But that has to go down as the best.’”
Schiavone went on to describe just how wild the Arena Mexico crowd became when Copeland appeared, noting that it was the AEW star’s first time competing inside the historic venue.
“And we opened the show with him, and it was his first time in Arena Mexico. The fans lost their freaking minds. I remember just looking at Excalibur and looking at Nigel (McGuinness), and I was shaking my head like, ‘What the hell?’ So it was in many ways a special night. We had some great matches.”
