AEW Dynamite 3/5/25
Live from the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California! Excalibur, Ian Riccaboni, and Taz are on commentary tonight as MJF is in the parking lot.
MJF asks Hangman if he wants to shoot, cowboy? Come meet him in the parking lot.
Tony Schiavone welcomes Swerve Strickland and Ricochet to the ring for their contract signing. Ricochet says at least Swerve doesn’t have to worry about his house being burned down… again. Ricochet is focused on Moxley. On Cope. Focused on being who he was supposed to be.. the AEW World Champion.
Swerve says Ricochet is a self-righteous entitled little prick, and this Sunday… he’s getting exposed. Leaving Swerve breathing is a regret Ricochet is going to have to live with. Swerve will carve his path to the AEW World Title through Ricochet, and then Ricochet will be remembered for two things. One, having his career briefly revived by Swerve… and having that little ring announcer wife of his. Woof.
Swerve turns around and Ricochet tries to attack with a pair of scissors, but Swerve blocks it and stabs Ricochet in the head with a pair of his own! Swerve stands tall and makes his way to the back.
Match #1. Don Callis Family & Bryan Keith vs. Orange Cassidy, Mark Briscoe, Will Ospreay, & Powerhouse Hobbs
Back body drop by Cage but Briscoe lands on his feet. Enziguiri by Briscoe and mounted punches in the corner. Now by Ospreay. Now by Hobbs. Now by Cassidy… who delivers one punch. Cage charges out of the corner with a clothesline. Jackhammer by Cage, who tags Archer. Ripcord elbow by Archer and another one into a Black Hole Slam! Commercial time. Back from break and all of the Don Callis Family pass Cassidy for a suplex. Stundog Millionaire to Mark Davis! Cassidy tags Hobbs and he clears everyone from the apron, before exchanging right hands with Davis. Shoulder block by Hobbs. Now it’s a clothesline-fest with Cage, Hobbs, and Archer. Hobbs runs through both guys! Exploder to Davis. Hobbs sends Ospreay into Davis in the corner. Now Briscoe. Now Cassidy jumps on Hobbs back and they avalanche Davis. Plancha by OSpreay takes out Archer. Suicide dive by Briscoe takes out Cage. Falling elbow by Cassidy off the shoulders of Hobbs to Davis. Two count as Keith breaks it up. Keith goes to the throat of Hobbs and Davis powerbombs him! Huge. Running boot in the face by Keith to Hobbs. Make that two. Hobbs blocks an exploder and runs through Keith. Phenomenal Forearm by Ospreay, who’s now legal. Cage comes in and eats a corkscrew kick. Cheeky Nandos to Keith! Two count. Clothesline by Davis and an enziguiri to Ospreay. Spinebuster by Hobbs. Superkick by Cage and a uranage to Hobbs. Satellite DDT By Cassidy to Cage! Suicide dive by Cassidy into a tornado DDT on the floor! Cassidy goes up top but Keith meets him with a headbutt. Avalanche exploder by Keith! Briscoe is here and lays in some elbow shots. T-Bone by Briscoe to Keith, but Archer runs through him with a lariat. Archer brings a chair in the ring and Briscoe palm strikes him in the face with the chair! Briscoe runs and dives off the chair to the floor, taking out Cage and Archer. OsCutter to Keith back inside the ring! Hidden Blade! One, two, three!
Winners: Powerhouse Hobbs, Mark Briscoe, Will Ospreay, and Orange Cassidy
Rating: ***1/2. Lots of fun “everyone go out there and get your moves in and make the crowd happy” kind of talent-heavy opener here. Bryan Keith, by the way, is really, really good.
Mark Davis jumps Ospreay from behind and locks in a rear naked choke. Cassidy and Briscoe get powerbombed on the apron. Murder Machines choke bomb Hobbs on the steps! Ospreay is choked out and Cage is stepping on his face, as Kyle Fletcher’s music hits. Fletcher is laying in some brutal shots to the back of the head of Ospreay, who’s clearly out at this point. Davis steps in between them and Fletcher berates him, telling him to do as he’s told. Davis then blasts Ospreay in the back with a chair. Fletcher unfolds a chair, and BRAINBUSTERS OSPREAY ON IT! BRUTAL! The Don Callis Family stand tall as Ospreay is laying in a crumpled heap.
Match #2. Cope vs. Wheeler Yuta
This is the last member of the Death Riders to fall before Revolution, by the way. Technical start here, with both guys exchanging pinning combinations, arm drags, and dropkicks. Commercial time. Back from break, and Yuta goes up top but gets caught by Cope. Cope with some clubbering and Yuta responds but some of his own, and a bite, and a headbutt, which send Cope crashing to the floor. Superfly Splash by Yuta gets two. Yuta looks for Cattle Mutilation and snatches a crossface. Yuta escapes but runs into a big boot. Impaler by Cope! Cope thinks spear but Yuta counters with the Busaiku Knee! Cope instinctually rolls to the floor and Yuta follows, rolling Cope back in the ring, and getting a two count. Cattle Mutilation is locked in! Cope rolls to escape, does, and counters with a facebuster. Both guys down now. Cope looks for a spear and Yuta moves, Yuta charges, misses, rebounds under the bottom rope… and right into a spear!
Winner: Cope
Rating: **3/4. Another win for Cope. Yuta had a fine showing, but it didn’t get a lot of time.
Cope shakes the hand of Yuta? Cope says, “this is what respect feels like” and leaves Yuta bewildered.
Jon Moxley is here. Moxley is furious at Yuta, saying he was supposed to take him out. Moxley pie faces Yuta. Again. Moxley grabs Yuta’s beard, but Yuta pie faces Moxley and walks off! Moxley follows Yuta to the back and Moxley says he doesn’t want to see Yuta again.
Moxley says Cope won, he’s all alone now. He got to him. He’s pissed off. He’s distracted. Cope has rattled Moxley’s cage, but the bars were there for his safety, not Moxley’s.
A 1987 music video of The OutRunners is shown and it’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen. No hyperbole.
Renee meets up with MJF in the parking lot and says Page won’t show up because he’s a coward. Page shows up in his truck and almost runs over MJF and Renee, and now Page is on the hunt. Page finds MJF and drags him to the ring, but it wasn’t MJF, it was some fella screaming “he made me do it” and MJF attacks Page from behind. MJF thinks Heat Seeker but Page holds on and MJF rolls an ankle, so Page thinks Buckshot.. but MJF kicks him low. Heat Seeker! MJF takes out the Dynamite Diamond Ring and blasts Page. Now MJF grabs the mic and asks the fans how they will feel when he does it?
MJF now goes under the ring and gets… lighter fluid. MJF covers Page in the lighter fluid and grabs a lighter, but a dozen or so security guards literally tackle MJF and drags him out of the arena.
The director of Queen of the Ring is here, and the movie premiers this week!
Match #3. Kris Statlander & Thunder Rosa vs. Penelope Ford & Megan Bayne
Ford is the victim of some attacks in the corner, as Thunder and Statlander trade quick tags. Drop toe hold by Ford sends Thunder on the middle rope, and Ford dropkicks the back for two. Thunder grabs the face of Ford, HARD overhand chop, rolling elbow, and a dropkick to Ford on the middle rope. Statlander gets the tag and comes in over the top with a senton. Bayne in now with a huge boot to Statlander that sends her to the floor, and then catches a diving Thunder coming off the top, and military presses her on top of Statlander on the floor! Bayne then uses Ford as a projectile, as well. Back from commercial and Bayne is in control, getting a two count on Thunder. Statlander gets the tag and comes off the top with a shogun dropkick. Running knee in the corner to Ford. One for Bayne. Fisherman’s Driver to Ford! Two count. Running European uppercut in the corner by Statlander and an assisted dropkick by Thunder. Dropkick to the side of the head of Bayne and a scissor kick by Statlander. Spicy dropkick by Thunder to Bayne. Statlander goes up top but Ford trips her up. Thunder grabs Ford and drags her in, before licking her face and… I don’t know, punching her in the side of the head? That’s awkward looking. Ford backs Thunder up to the corner and Bayne makes the tag. Thunder gets the boots up and proceeds to fight off both women. Stunner to Bayne. Thunder charges Ford but Ford moves and Bayne boots her in the face. Fate’s Descent to Thunder Rosa and this one’s over.
Winners: Megan Bayne & Penelope Ford
Rating: **. Well… this was a tag match. Again, we got a few awkward spots here and I don’t know if it was Thunder Rosa giving a receipt or what, but… it felt kind of strange. That said, Bayne and Ford are awesome together and Bayne’s got a bright future.
Renee welcomes Mercedes Mone. Mone is ready for Momo and she thinks Serena Deeb will break Momo for her on Collision.
Max Caster is here. He tries to get a horrible chant going. It’s not working. Here’s Switchblade Jay White.
Match #4. Jay White vs. Max Caster
Bladerunner.
Winner: Jay White
Rating: NR
Renee is with Mariah May and Toni Storm. Both women have agreed to no contact. Mariah May spits in Toni’s face. Toni says it’s nice to know that May still cares. May says she made her do that, to someone that she loves. Storm sitting there like she’s a victim. Renee reminds Mariah May that she did this. May says Storm and that title are nothing without her, and she will take them down together. May says she’s the woman from hell and she will drag Toni down with her. Storm says she doesn’t deserve the dignity of death, and she will live in mediocrity. Forever. One day people will ask, “whatever happened to Mariah May?” Toni says she’ll find out what happens when you try to kill God. Renee prays that neither woman gets hurt, to which both women reply with “pray for her” at the same time. This was excellent.
Match #5. Swerve Strickland & Brody King vs. Kazuchika Okada & Ricochet
Okada gets tossed to the outside and Brody follows him, throwing him all around the ringside area and into the LED board. Ricochet eats a big boot in the corner and Okada accidentally boots him in the face. Crossbody by Brody crushes both men. Brody puts both guys on his shoulders and Swerve stomps the back of both of their heads. Ricochet gets rolled in the ring and Swerve snap mares him, senton by Brody, and a diving European uppercut to the back off the middle rope. Rolling Thunder Flatliner by Swerve is countered into a Code Breaker for two. Commercial. Swerve tags Brody, who back body drops everyone and clotheslines Okada. Brody drops Ricochet with a chop and then flapjacks Okada on top of him. Senton on to both! Death Valley Driver on Okada! Two count as Ricochet breaks it up, but then he gets dumped outside. Brody charges into an enziguiri from the apron by Ricochet and Okada with a dropkick! Two count. Okada runs into a big clothesline and both guys are down. Swerve and Ricochet both get the tags and Swerve is laying on the offense. Hip toss into a neckbreaker by Swerve and a float over deadlift suplex for two. Elbows back and forth. Rising knee by Ricochet and he counters a powerbomb with a spike DDT! Two count. Ricochet looks for Vertigo and Swerve looks for Big Pressure, but Ricochet rolls through for a two count. Flatliner by Swerve! House Call! Swerve goes up top.. Swerve Stomp to Ricochet! Okada comes off the top with the elbow to break up the pin. Brody and Okada now trade elbows and Brody chops the chest off Okada! Brody blocks the Rainmaker and clotheslines Okada in the corner. Brody misses the cannonball and Okada grabs the title belt, lining up Brody. Swerve stomps Okada in mid-air! The referee is distracted and Ricochet blasts Swerve with the belt! One, two, three!
Winners: Ricochet and Kazuchika Okada
Rating: ***. Fine main event that served it’s purpose, furthering two individual singles matches via a tag team match in the go-home show.
Final Thoughts: Tonight’s show really felt like it was all over the place, and it didn’t have a lot of focus. The Toni Storm/Mariah May segment was fantastic, so let’s start there. I am sold on their match at Revolution, and I can’t wait. Swerve and Ricochet, as well as MJF and Hangman, also added some sauce to their matches. The opening match and the main event were both strong, but the whole middle of the show, wrestling-wise, was largely forgettable. 6.75/10.
