Alex Wright says he spent roughly six months under contract to WCW without receiving his pay before finally confronting Eric Bischoff face-to-face.
Wright recalled the difficult beginning of his WCW career during an interview with Bryan Asbury on Developmentally Speaking, available through the show’s official YouTube channel.
According to Wright, having a contract did not initially translate into getting paid.
“I had a contract, but they didn’t pay me for a couple months. I think it was a half a year.”
The situation created significant financial problems for Wright, who had relocated from Germany to pursue the WCW opportunity.
“I owed a lot of money to a lot of good people, especially to my family.”
Wright eventually decided to address the problem directly. He recalled going to the CNN building in Atlanta without an appointment and entering Bischoff’s office.
“Hey, listen Eric, I can lose money in Germany also. I don’t have to be in the States for that. So either you pay me or I’m gone.”
Wright believes his willingness to confront Bischoff ultimately changed the situation.
“I think that really impressed him because from that moment on they paid me.”
The story adds another layer to Wright’s recollections about how difficult his early WCW period was before he became established on television.
