Former WCW star Alex Wright says WWE once proposed a storyline involving him and Hulk Hogan after WCW shut down.
Wright discussed WWE’s post-WCW interest during an interview with Bryan Asbury on Developmentally Speaking. The episode was originally released on January 26, 2026.
Wright said WWE contacted him twice after his time with WCW came to an end.
“WWE approached me twice and asked me if I’m interested, if I want to come to them.”
The fact that Wright turned WWE down has been discussed previously. Wright explained that he was physically and mentally burned out from his WCW run and did not believe it would have been fair to accept an offer when he could not give WWE, the fans or himself his full effort.
What Wright additionally revealed was that WWE had at one point discussed pairing him with one of WCW’s biggest former stars.
“Well, one time they said, ‘Well, we would like to do an story with you and Hogan.’”
Wright recognized the significance of what WWE was proposing.
“So that would have been actually a very big deal.”
Wright did not identify who within WWE presented the idea, what the proposed storyline with Hogan would have involved or whether Hogan himself was aware of the concept.
Wright was among the WCW wrestlers who remained under a Time Warner contract following WWE’s purchase of the promotion in 2001. He said WWE’s proposed contract buyout was not financially appealing, and he ultimately returned to Germany before the company later contacted him about joining.
WrestlingHeadlines recently covered JBL’s explanation of Vince McMahon’s approach to former WCW talent, with JBL arguing that McMahon was reluctant to present wrestlers identified with a competing promotion on equal footing with WWE’s established stars.
The proposed Wright-Hogan storyline never materialized, with Wright remaining away from WWE after WCW’s closure.
