Doctor's Orders: Just Bring It

I don’t believe the hype.

It’s that simple. I left for awhile, I stopped paying attention, and I knew that the only way to scale things back a bit was to cut ties from this place. So, that’s what I did and it worked the way it was intended to work. Yet, it was never a long-term plan. It was always my intention to come back in some way, shape, or form; and I did know that I’d never return to the place that I left. In that place, I was recognized as one of the best surrounded by others that would be called the same. If you were to put that time into historical context, I would call it a golden age. I was doing what I did better than anyone else ever had (and many would argue ever will). My peers were dominant in their own right, doing phenomenal work that I think was the best of all-time. I’m smart enough to know that I couldn’t expect to come back to that. Times change; people change; the landscape changes; everything changes. I also know myself, though, and I knew that I would not be able to come back and just sit on the sidelines while everyone else did their thing and helped continue to build this place. Eventually, I’d have to get back in the game in a new way and try to recreate myself. And there’s something that you should know about me…deep down, I’m highly competitive. I’m respectful, but I’m damn sure not going to sit back while everyone is calling somebody else the best and not take offense to it and use it as fuel to my own desire to be known as the best.

So, here I sit. I’ve been back for long enough. I did everything that I knew I’d do; reinventing myself and putting myself in position to being the best in a whole new way. Finally, that fire inside me to be the best is starting to creep up again. I’m seasoned enough, now, to take on that challenge. I’m highly skilled and I know it. I already think that I’m arguably the best. Confidence is a prerequisite to being the best at anything; without it, you’re doomed to failure. Those that are the very best – the elite, greatest of all-time types – have a swagger about them, while remaining the slightest bit insecure. They’re good enough to know that no one can touch them, but intelligent enough to realize that they have to stay at their best to both get where they want to be and stay there. I’m that kind of guy. Thus, it’s time to start pushing toward the throne again and I WILL NOT STOP until I’m the one sitting with the crown while someone new tries to push me off the throne. Life can be a game of kings and pawns – especially this life and this game. I was born to be a king; not a pawn.

I find it fascinating, then, that the man on the throne is no king. I actually remember him from long ago; during my first stint. Don’t get me wrong; I knew that this man had loads of potential. He had every gift that a man could be given, but his peak was never supposed to be any higher than that of a complimentary figure. People like me are the highest mountain that artists use to make $1000 paintings. People like him are the mountains on either side of me to give the painting a nice background. In this world that I’ve returned to, though, this lesser man is masquerading himself to be the pinnacle. He thinks he’s the best and he’s arrogant. The guy is above average at best, but he’s like a Yorkshire terrier that thinks he’s a Rothweiler – he thinks he’s big and he thinks he’s great, but he’s still a little dog that the big dogs could destroy if they so chose to do so. That’s not to take anything away from what he’s accomplished. He certainly has done quite well for himself and has developed a following that is surprisingly on par with some of the best ever. If you ask me, though, he is the result of the changing landscape and the increased access to our product more than he’s the cause of it. In a different era, he’d be far less relevant.

The time has come for a return to the way things should be. A growing number of people are calling for it. It won’t be easy. As mentioned previously, times have changed a bit since my first run. I’ll give the guy credit for managing to surround himself with a bunch of glad handlers and ass kissers that do nothing but sing his praises. He’s gained a lot of power. His minions are drawn to people like him and even the boss loves him, often over praising him for the overall importance of what he’s meant to our business. I’ve seen this happen before – when I was far younger and inexperienced in how things work. Guys that aren’t supposed to be in his spot develop unhealthy egos. He’s changed. He’s not the same guy that I remember from back in the day; the one that I used to have conversations with. Now, he often ignores me. He belittles people. What happened? We are cordial with one another, but I look at him and see a crown floating slightly above his head. It’s not secure to his skull and it’s just waiting to be snatched away.

What troubles me most is that the people have become conditioned to view above average as great; to appreciate quantity over quality. That’s one change in this business that I do not enjoy. Too much of something is not a good thing and our current “king” is the poster boy. It would be one thing if he was able to keep it fresh, interesting, and engaging, but unfortunately his stuff is repetitive. Just because you paint “consistent excellence” across the top of a painting doesn’t change the fact that the painting itself is really quite bland; it doesn’t change the fact that he is one-dimensional and overhyped. It’s time that people were reminded what excellence looks like. I will provide it. I will do things that no one else can do. You want the greatest, you deserve the greatest, but you’ve forgotten what it means to be great. I will remind you. And as for him? He’ll take his rightful place NEXT TO the throne.

We're about 5 weeks out from the return of The Rock to TV. I have a question for you about it: do you think Rock's return is affecting the WWE creative team's ability to focus on the here and now? Many feel that the current storylines have been rushed. Do you think Rock's pending presence has anything to do with that? You can answer in the FB feedback, email me, or you can hit me up @TheDocLOP on Twitter.
