Mr. Tito, 12/24/11: This was a column I wrote during late March 2011... This was actually prepared for a LoPForums.com contest among our farm system columns. Someone was up against LordsofPain.net's Hustle, but dropped out. Hustle was without an opponent, so for fun, I figured "why not?".

I enjoyed this column... I gave a little bit of "insider info" on Randy Orton that I heard over the years while adding Wrestlemania 27 predictions (my classic What Should Happen/What Will Happen format). Plenty of Wrestlemania BLOG links to check out below and the "10 Things I Think" amuse me in hindsight.

Enjoy!

--------------------

The "Excellence in Column Writing" has returned for a Wrestlemania 27 special column. First and foremost, let me just suggest that I haven't been this excited about a Wrestlemania since Wrestlemania 21 where Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels was going to occur (and delivered huge!). I'm really enjoying the card and hype that the WWE Creative Staff has put together for the past month and they should be commended for taking the WWE's biggest show seriously when a few months ago, Wrestlemania 27 was actually looking bleak. Better booking (finally toughening up the Miz) and better talent added (Rock/Triple H/Undertaker/Steve Austin) certainly has made the difference. That, and WWE numbers from the latter half of 2010 were down and Vince McMahon has historically worked better under adversity. I'm sure Vince doesn't want to answer to the rest of the WWE Board of Directors and shareholders as to why Wrestemanias numbers were down. The recent moves by Vince and the Creative Staff, however, makes me believe that Wrestlemania 27 will not only surpass last year's Wrestlemania, but possibly spike above previous years' numbers as well. We'll see how having Rock/Triple H/Undertaker on RAW for the week before Wrestlemania 27 helps numbers or not.

But lost in the Triple H vs. Undertaker hype, the Rock's return and possible heat with John Cena, and Steve Austin's involvement with Jerry Lawler/Michael Cole is another match which will probably steal the show. It seems that CM Punk vs. Randy Orton is now flying under the radar as being 4th in the Wrestlemania "pecking order", even though it shouldn't be. CM Punk is a highly talented performer and Randy Orton is hitting his strides during the prime of his career. This match has serious potential to be that undercard match that "steals the show", much like Steamboat vs. Savage did at Wrestlemania 3, Roddy Piper vs. Bret Hart did at Wrestlemania 8, both Owen/Bret and Shawn/Razor at Wrestlemania 10, Austin/Hart at Wrestlemania 13, the Ladder match from Wrestlemania 20, Michaels/Jericho at Wrestlemania 19, etc, have in the past. If the WWE were bold to make this the "hot opener" of Wrestlemania 27, this match will really explode.

Seeing Randy Orton hitting his wrestling peak during 2010 and now through 2011 has been great to see. Furthermore, the scene from last Monday of Randy getting attacked in front of his "tour bus" was touching in that you're seeing a glimpse of Randy Orton as a family man (his wife was there to comfort him after the CM Punk attack). Before I made my "comeback" during 2010 writing about wrestling on a regular basis as well as watching wrestling regularly, I wrote for LordsofPain.net from October 1998 to October 2006 and did quite well for myself during that period of time. For the last 4/5 years of that run, I was able to cover Randy from his WWE debut during 2002 through 2006. To see Randy Orton motivated as a professional wrestler to be the absolute best in the business as well as a family man is quite the 180 from what I was hearing from 2002-2006, and somewhat during 2007 when I was still hearing and reading things...

As a columnist during that time, and quite thankful for the popular vehicle known as LordsofPain.net, my column was read widely by the industry. Insomuch that I would have wrestlers and road agents e-mailing me either to criticize and/or eventually beginning to provide me with inside information on the business. During the mid-2000's, I was regularly in contact with a WWE midcarder and a road agent, who are both no longer working for the WWE right now. The midcarder seemed to have creative differences with management and was probably contacting myself, as well as other news entities, to probably help his work cause. The road agent, however, was tired of me railing on the WWE creative staff and was at first defensive of his creative job, but he soon grew tired of the McMahons and began to give me tips. Both could be hit or miss on their information, but I was mostly able to reconcile their information to what Dave Meltzer, Dave Scherer, Wade Keller, etc. were posting from their inside sources. It was good information to have to add layers to the current news stories, as often I was unsure of the validity of the midcarder/agent's tips and some of the information was sensitive as to give away their identity.

Both the one man both sources gave me a significant amount of feedback on was Randy Orton. In fact, the midcarder hated Randy's guts! The way he carried himself during 2003-2006, according to my sources, was quite problematic for the WWE locker room. As reported elsewhere, it seemed that Orton was befriended by Triple H. I was always told by several wrestlers in the industry that nobody knows how the friendship began, but most assume that Orton simply said and did the right things to impress the key members of WWE management (i.e. McMahons and Triple H, i.e. kissing ass). Hence, Orton's involvement with the stable Evolution, along with 2 other Triple H pals in Ric Flair and Batista. Orton was quite crafty with his friendship of Triple H, I was always told.

It seemed that during 2003-2006, Orton was feeling a sense of entitlement from his backstage connections and possibly from the push granted to him at a young age. When he won the World Title at SummerSlam 2004 versus Chris Benoit, he was only 24 years old and became the youngest wrestler to ever hold a World Title in WWE history. It seemed that this 2004 push came out of nowhere, too. As I've heard it from the midcarder and then confirmed by the road agent who attended several creative meetings, most non-McMahon creative staff members wanted to push Batista as the first Evolution member beyond Triple H to win the World Title. Hence, after Randy Orton's World Title reign fell apart, why Batista was soon pushed and eventually defeated Triple H at Wrestlemania 21 for the World Title. But the McMahons were very much in favor of the 2004 Randy Orton push, but soon had to eat lots of crow when the WWE fans rejected Orton as champion and as a face, and weren't buying "Randy Wear" gear. Thankfully, it took less than a month for the WWE to figure out that Randy wasn't ready at the time.

Orton, backstage, seemed to keep himself isolated from the rest of the wrestling population aside from his fellow Evolution members. But worst of all, Orton seemed to have a real disdain for anyone other than Triple H or Vince McMahon giving him advice on how to work a match. The road agent I spoke to said he never had to directly work with any of Randy's programs, but fellow agents did and they all hated working with Randy. They said talking with Randy was like a "deer in headlights", as he always seemed to have a dead stare look to him whenever someone would try to talk to him or he'd find a reason to blow off that agent. If you'll notice during Orton's early years, he was a horrible wrestler who didn't seem to improve with time other than his good bouts with Edge. It didn't appear that Orton was putting in the hard work to be great, but felt he was entitled to be great.

The midcarder always thought Orton was "on something", whether it was cosmetic or recreational, and suggested that this contributed to a bad attitude backstage for Orton. He was suspended during April 2006 for "unprofessional conduct" (according to the Chicago Sun-Times, reporting), with Orton reportedly admitting to smoking marijuana backstage during July 2006. Sports Illustrated during March 2007 posted an article about pro wrestlers and athletes buying illegal performance enhancing drugs through online pharmacies. Just from this report alone, Orton had 8 prescriptions filed for 6 different types of drugs (tanozolol, nandrolone, anastrozole, Clomiphene citrate, oxandrolone and testosterone) from March 2004 to August 2004. Obviously, at young age, a sense of entitlement, and reported issues with drug use, Orton was probably difficult to deal with back then compared to now. On the drug front, it might have taken the deaths of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit to create not only a wake-up call for wrestlers backstage, but to actually enforce testing to keep wrestlers clean (especially without a drug testing policy before Eddie's death, as the U.S. Congress found out upon their investigation after Benoit's death).

Where the midcarder really loathed Randy Orton was on his attitude, and not just on his sense of entitlement or how he acted beyond his inner circle of friends, i.e. the treatment of others. Orton either ignored you or didn't hesitate to openly disrespect you. As reported by LordsofPain.net during June 2005, former Diva Search contestant Rochelle Loewen complained of harassment by Orton, but possibly independent of Orton, I've heard that the entire first season of the Diva Search contest was "open season" for wrestlers raging in testosterone and it didn't mix well backstage. Some of the diva contestants probably understood the risks of working with a male dominated industry, such as Christy Hemme who seemed to really grasp the wrestling business (i.e. male dominated world) and even spoke out against Loewen's allegations. Whether or not Orton participated in any said harassment of the females is unknown officially, but who knows, maybe someday a National Enquirer style magazine will expose the wrestling business and its inner sexual harassment (if it's still occurring).

Randy Orton will just have turned 31 years old on Wrestlemania 27. The period of time in which I'm describing where he had issues was in his mid-20's. Just think of your own personal life during your 20's and if they weren't wild, immature, and problematic. Then, amplify that life by working in the cut-throat pro wrestling industry. Orton had built-in "legacy" advantages, thanks to his daddy, that other wrestlers didn't have the luxury of enjoying. He used the silver spoon to his advantage, and thus it allowed him to be lazy and careless in his mid-20's when he should have been taking his role with the WWE more seriously. Now, to be in his early 30's, he's taking it damn seriously and you're seeing results. Mistakes are made in the past and there are plenty of pro wrestlers who did worse and got away with it. At Wrestlemania 27, Orton has the opportunity to show the world what a professional wrestler he has become.

Wrestlemania 27 - What WILL Happen vs. What SHOULD Happen

New take on my Wrestlemania predictions for 2011, as I'll present what I think WILL happen and then I'll suggest, putting on my booking cap, what SHOULD happen. Enjoy!

The Corre (Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater and Ezekiel Jackson) versus Santino Marella, Vladamir Kozlov, Big Show and Kane
This is possibly the match that I least look forward to on the entire show, as it reminds me of a slapped together Wrestlemania 16 match (maybe even Wrestlemania 20 which also had clusters of wrestlers in each match). To me, "the Corre" needs some kind of credibility and it appears to me that why Santinio and Kozlov were added is so that Big Show/Kane could actually be on the receiving end of a loss. Otherwise, the WWE Creative Staff isn't going to let Kane/Big Show lose.

- What WILL Happen: Either Santino or Kozlov will get pinned by Wade Barrett.

- What SHOULD Happen: Wade Barrett gets a shocking clean pin over Kane to set up a feud after Wrestlemania.

Trish Stratus/Snooki/John Morrison vs. Dolph Ziggler/LayCool
WWE could have went with Morrison versus Ziggler straight-up, but as I'll discuss below, Snooki = ratings. Her fans will tune in and in my mind, the WWE would want to keep those new viewers satisfied and in a good mood to watch the best that the WWE has to offer.

- What WILL Happen: Snooki will pin Layla to enable Trish/Snooki/Morrison to win.

- What SHOULD Happen: Dolph Ziggler holds the tights to pin John Morrison, thus setting up a whole summer of feuding.

Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes
Honestly, I plead ignorance on this one as I didn't catch a single Smackdown segment where these two were feuding. So I'll get right my analysis...

- What WILL Happen: Rey Mysterio goes over clean.

- What SHOULD Happen: Sin Cara debuts and delivers a stunning spot to cost Mysterio the match.

Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole
Honestly, it's almost hard to imagine that Jerry Lawler, a company employee for over 15 years, never got to wrestle at Wrestlemania. This feud has been building and building since Cole cost Lawler his 61st birthday WWE Title match against the Miz in a ladder match. At the expense of diminishing the WWE Champion at the time, this feud got off to a strong start and will come to a head at Wrestlemania. Lawler taught a thing or two to the Miz for the past few months, so thus I think he could carry Cole to something decent. I almost forget that Steve Austin is the referee of this match...

-What WILL Happen: Jerry Lawler goes over clean.

-What SHOULD Happen: Jerry Lawler goes over clean, but is attacked afterward by Brian Christopher to extend the Cole/Lawler feud. Interestingly, the WWE might have something in Jerry Lawler wrestling at his older age and his feud with Cole feels very real.

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk
Hopefully, from this recent RAW, the knee injury of Orton isn't overplayed. I would love a pure athletic bout between both of these wrestlers, but to overbook it with a knee injury storyline... Eh. CM Punk doesn't tell me he's one to psychologically work on that knee the entire time, but I could be surprised.

-What WILL Happen: CM Punk wins the match to extend this feud into the summer.

-What SHOULD Happen: CM Punk wins the match cleanly and without question. Though CM Punk has been a former World Heavyweight Champion, it's just not something that's remembered. A strong Wrestlemania win will put him firmly on the RAW map as a heel.

Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan
This is the one match that needs to be the "hot opener", as it could be a piss-break for live attendees of Wrestlemania if it's elsewhere. Not that this will be a bad match, as I'm fans of both wrestlers workrate... But their booking has been terrible with Daniel Bryan just not fitting well as a face and Sheamus is still feeling the aftermath of being pushed too fast through 2010.

-What WILL Happen: Daniel Bryan regains his U.S. Title, provided Sheamus's defeat of Bryan during the tag match on RAW.

-What SHOULD Happen: Sheamus retains. Midcard titles seem to be better suited for heels, and Sheamus needs something to keep him going. I wouldn't doubt that during the 2011 Brand Draft, Sheamus goes to Smackdown as U.S. Champion and the Intercontinental Champion goes to RAW.

Alberto Del Rio vs. Edge
Will Christian join this match, or won't he? Through Monday Night RAW, he still hasn't been added to this match... But we still have Smackdown to ruin things! I stand firmly against adding Christian because the winner of the Royal Rumble should get his own singles match. And YES, you wrestling marks, that applies to all cases, even Benoit/HBK/Triple H from 2004.

-What WILL Happen: Del Rio wins the World Heavyweight Championship. WWE Creative seems very high on him. Christian may turn heel on Edge to get the job done.

-What SHOULD Happen: Edge wins. Del Rio needs a bit more seasoning, in my opinion, and Edge deserves a strong Wrestlemania moment as retaining champion. WWE has pushed several younger wrestlers too early to the title, and Del Rio needs a bit more main event experience in the ring to get the title.

Triple H vs. the Undertaker
Nevermind that they wrestled an epic match 10 years ago, oh nooooo, that didn't happen! It's had to suggest how well this match will go. Undertaker is reportedly a bit tender from his shoulder surgery and Triple H has some ring rust. However, both of these two mostly bring it for Wrestlemania and both know revenues will be flowing their way if they pull this match off.

-What WILL Happen: Undertaker wins and continues the "streak". I'm sensing that Shawn Michaels will cost Triple H the match, suggesting that if Shawn can't beat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania, nobody should! Who knows, it could set-up one last Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels match...

-What SHOULD Happen: I'm liking my "what will happen" prediction, but I'll suggest that the Undertaker should put over Triple H to make-up for Wrestlemania 17. Triple H was in the prime of his career back during 2001 and was fresh off beating Steve Austin at No Way Out 2001. Yet, he allowed the Undertaker to defeat him at Wrestlemania 17. Undertaker should pay Triple H back for that generous win.

John Cena vs. the Miz
The actions of John Cena giving the Rock the "Attitude Adjustment" guarantees that the Rock will get involved. But the question is when and how. In my opinion, the Rock has helped both John Cena and especially the Miz step up their games. WWE Creative has finally given the Miz some balls and he's been a total bastard throughout this entire feud. Miz has the most to gain from this storyline, even if John Cena vs. the Rock is the real money draw. Miz's career has greatly advanced because of feeding off of the Cena/Rock hatred.

-What WILL Happen: John Cena wins and becomes WWE Champion and is attacked afterward by the Rock.

-What SHOULD Happen: The Rock costs John Cena the match against the Miz, allowing Miz to retain as champion. Costing a wrestler a World Title is personal and the Miz has more to gain as WWE Champion than Cena in terms of growth.

10 Things I Think

1) I heard more about Edge than I did about Randy Orton. Back during 2009, May or June I believe, I wrote a column for LordsofPain.net about Edge and how he and Triple H could not coexist. The midcarder source told me that once he was caught banging Lita behind Matt Hardy's back and ending up getting a push because of it, the whole "Rated R Superstar" went to his head. He said that he wrestled Edge about 2-3 times during the mid-2000's when Edge was first in the WWE Title hunt and said that Edge became incredibly controlling over his matches. Edge, like the Hardys and Christian, have their own unique moves that they must hit in every match, and Edge was not only dead set on hitting his spots, but controlling everything his opponent did. However, Edge was able to get away with it because Vince McMahon liked him. Edge has done everything Vince has ever wanted him to do (aside from cutting his hair), and being a company many paid off with some stroke during the mid-2000's through today. Think of it this way... Edge's actions have exposed the WWE with the way his affair with Lita went public and for Edge popping up most among wrestlers for obtaining performance enhancing drugs within Sports Illustrated's investigative reporting. It's all about who you know...

2) Come on, Kurt Angle. Another year, another questionable action by Kurt Angle. He was reportedly found by police intoxicated in a vehicle while stopped in the median of a highway. Of course. I read his Twitter account of the events. Whatever. He's a guy who seems to always ask for trouble outside of pro wrestling. He actually had a clean 2010 after back-to-back-to-back years of problems that seemed to follow him after he left the WWE in 2006. People wonder why Kurt Angle hasn't made much of a difference to TNA's bottom line. Well, maybe people don't want to follow the next guy who is clearly self-destructing. We've invested much of our time and dollars following wrestling superstars only for them to die due to transgressions. Angle is a great, great wrestler and should be a much bigger superstar than what he presently is... But he just can't keep it together.

3) Can the WWE stop trying to please GLAAD? Recently, two incidents have the WWE's politically correct department working in overtime... From John Cena's rapping promos against the Rock to Michael Cole's Twitter post, the WWE public relations machine is trying to mop things up while behing beholden to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). I get why, as the WWE is a publicly traded corporation and has actively tried to become a more family friendly form of entertainment after the "Attitude" Era and the continued crash television style storylines the WWE had in the years thereafter (can't forget about Eric Bischoff's HLA - Hot Lesbian Action). However, in each case, Cena and Cole were MOCKING STRAIGHT PEOPLE. Yeah, it's in bad taste to insinuate that a straight person wants to go the opposite way, but to call the PC Police on each and every schoolyard cutdown? Come on... I respect the wishes of GLAAD, who is protecting the interests of homosexuality against blatant bigotry, but NOTHING in John Cena or Michael Cole's histories suggest that they are homophobic. It should be a non-story, as neither Cole or Cena should have to apologize... GLAAD can file their complaints and the WWE, as a corporate entity, can choose to punish or not. But to go further than that would be overkill and just a continued attention grabber of GLAAD.

4) WWE Hall of Fame is officially worse than the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame has a highly questionable induction process, as the voters have their own specific taste of music in addition to their constant views on influence versus success. They are just finally inducting Alice Cooper after years of ignoring him, while not even caring to induct KISS, Def Leppard, Deep Purple, Chicago, and many other bands while finding it acceptable to induct pop bands or non-Rock N Roll acts. But the WWE Hall of Fame is approaching JOKE level. First, we have Drew Carey getting inducted after a few guest appearances for the WWE, but at least he appeared in the WWE... Abdullah the Butcher NEVER appeared for the WWE, ever, and he's getting inducted into their Hall of Fame. That's insane... I know, the WWE inducted the AWA and World Class guys, and several wrestlers with just a few years of WWE experience... BUT COME ON! You have Randy Savage, arguably second to only Hulk Hogan from 1985 to 1994, not inducted yet into the Hall of Fame. You also have Bruno Sammartino not in as well. Both Savage and Sammartino are two of the WWE's all time greats and they aren't in. Yet, Drew Carey and Abdullah the Butcher get in? Savage is 58 and Bruno is 75... Both have physical tolls taken on their bodies from pro wrestling and could potentially be leaving the world in the upcoming years. Even if they won't commit to personal appearances, induct them anyway. And I'm only at the tip of the "needs inducted" iceberg (Owen Hart, Rick Rude, Chris Benoit, the Rock, etc.).

5) This is why Sheamus is U.S. Champion and not WWE Champion. OUCH at this following newsbyte on the RAW ratings breakdown from last week: In the segment by segment breakdown, Sheamus vs. Evan Bourne lost 479,000 viewers from the opener. From June through September, ratings and buyrates started to fall and Sheamus was WWE Champion. Now, I think he's a solid wrestler, but this is just another case of the WWE pushing a younger wrestler too soon. Sheamus wasn't ready to be champion for the 2 times the WWE crowned him that, and thus the damage done when he wrestles a short 5'9", 183 former Ring of Honor wrestler: nobody cares! And Sheamus is the guy the WWE actually booked to do an injury angle with Triple H, and months of declining ratings/buyrates later, the WWE smashes him with ease and Sheamus is now the U.S Champion. 479,000 fans lost by just wrestling a match... Wow.

6) The WWE should want Snooki. Yes, I agree that "Jersey Shore" is a God-awful show and I certainly do not watch it... But there are people watching it. In fact, to the tune of 7-8 million weekly! And Jersey Shore has consistently out-rated Monday Night RAW throughout 2011. Still convinced that having Snooki on the WWE and/or Wrestlemania is a bad idea? Then you're a moron who has no idea about marketing. Of course, having her wrestle will be brutal... But if the WWE can pull in a fraction of Jersey Shore's audience to boost Wrestlemania 27 numbers...

7) Great moment from American Idol. Mrs. Tito enjoys American Idol, so therefore, I'm watching it... But a really cool segment the other night with one of the contestants admitting to being a huge wrestling fan. He and another contestant were always watching it in the Idol house and one night, they had a mock wrestling match which was quite amusing. Then, with both guys up for elimination, Ryan Seacrest said that a special guest was on hand for them... Coming out to "Eye of the Tiger" (I believe it was Hogan's theme for Wrestlemania 1?), Hulk Hogan came out and delivered the news that both were safe. They were in complete awe of Hogan and it was a great mainstream moment for pro wrestling.

8) No so much with Chris Jericho. Yikes, talk about flat feet... One would think that with pro wrestlers, they are so quick on their feat that a transition to dancing would be easy. No so for Chris Jericho on Dancing With The Stars. I guess wrestling charisma doesn't translate to good dancing.

9) WWE stock tip: Moderate Buy. At $12.55 from Friday, the stock is at its lower end of the $10 to $20 range, and I figure with higher ratings and stronger Wrestlemania 27 hype, the WWE's 1st and 2nd quarter numbers will look pretty decent. Not booming, as incomes are still strained, but the WWE remains profitable and pays a good dividend. I'm hesitant, however, to tall this a long-term buy provided how dependent the WWE is on NBC/Universal for their television deal to fuel everything. I figure after a decent earnings posting following March 31st, the stock could trend towards $15 to allow for a quick price difference profit, but it might not be worth the trouble. However, to hold for 2011 and 2012 as a small part of your portfolio, buying at $12.55 and getting guaranteed dividends is a solid investment.

10) I enjoy getting Hustled. Lastly, I just want to give props to Hustle for his great work on LordsofPain.net as a columnist. He is pushing out tremendous quality and is carrying the LoP column torch quite well. His stuff is very much worth checking out: http://www.lordsofpain.net/columns/hustleispostingrightnow/index.html

@ That's all I have, folks... Enjoy Wrestlemania 27! It's stacking up to look like a great show in the making and it's now up to the wrestlers to deliver. Otherwise, just chill till the next episode!
