WWE nXt Results
August 17th, 2016

On commentary tonight, at Full Sail University, are Tom Phillips and Corey Graves.

Opening Segment

Singles Match: Hideo Itami vs. Mustafa Ali

After the initial tie-up, it’s Ali, off the ropes, with a dropkick, landing the first blow. He tries to repeat it but gets a knee to the gut, and then a kick to the head from Itami. Itami exposes the knee and we know what’s coming…a leap over the fallen Ali and a brush of the foot to the shoulder.

Into the corner, Ali tumbles on to Itami’s back and on to the mat, and I’m thinking this should be a new Olympic event: a mix of wrestling and floor routine gymnastics. Ali leaves the ring for a breather and Itami didn’t agree to it, connecting with a baseball slide kick under the bottom rope! He brings Ali back into the ring, which gives Ali time to hit Itami with a neckbreaker. 1-2 kickout!

Brief headlock by Ali. Itami breaks free, charges into the corner. Ali evades it, stuns him with a kick and follows it up with another neckbreaker for a 2 count. Ali asks Itami to stand down and calls him an old man. Itami responds with clotheslines. Dragon screwleg. Jumping front kick in the corner. Itami brings a combination striking attack of chops, fists and kicks, sending Ali, seated, into the turnbuckle. A guy in the crowd yells, “FINISH HIM!” which gets good response from the audience and the commentators.
Big dropkick. Ali stumbles out from the corner and gets a flying knee in the face. Ali’s finished. Itami wins.

Winner: Hideo Itami via pinfall in 4 minutes

One cool point for Itami who is quickly returning to form after his long absence. Two fairly easy wins in a row are just the beginning of what should be a very productive final four months of 2016. If he continues to wrestle about twice a month on nXt TV, support will continue to build for him in his quest to return to consideration as a championship contender.

Also, just throwing this out there, I think Austin Aries and him could have a helluva good match.

Coming Up: A 6-man tag match in the women’s division featuring nXt graduates and now Smackdown Live roster members Carmella and Alexa Bliss

Second Segment

“Serpents” by Neckdeep gets some promo time because it is yet another official theme song for nXt Takeover: Brooklyn II.

Promo: The promo video for Asuka (c) vs. Bayley II for the nXt Women’s Championship is shown.

Backstage, Carmella and her tag partners are warming up for their match.

Third Segment

Promo: We see footage of some of the newer nXt wrestlers like Bobby Roode and Austin Aries talking about wrestling at Takeover: Brooklyn II. No Way Jose also speaks about his match against Aries. Cien speaks in Spanish, with English subtitles, about facing Roode. Then it’s The Revival and Gargano and Ciampa who are pumped for their championship match at Takeover, keen to prove who’s best. They’re all excited for their matches.

Backstage, Alexa Bliss is instructing her tag partners to stretch hard and get ready for the match.

Fourth Segment

It’s another official theme song for nXt Takeover: Brooklyn II- “Giant” by Banks & Steelz
Backstage, in his office, nXt General Manager William Regal has a few words to share. He says this is the place where international wrestlers get the best competition. Billie Kay interrupts him and says how can it be the best Takeover yet if she’s on the card? Regal agrees and he’ll make it happen. She’ll face the debuting Ember Moon. Kay nods in agreement.

6-Woman Tag Team Match: Carmella, Liv Morgan & Nikki Glenncross vs. Alexa Bliss, Daria Berenato & Mandy Rose

Bliss and Glenncross begin this tilt, one that Corey Graves says will make this one of the best episodes in nXt’s history. Glenncross and Bliss yell at each other a little before Bliss whips Glenncross into the corner. Glenncross leaps over Bliss, off the ropes and a crossbody for a quick 2 count. Dropkick and Glenncross tries to follow it up but Bliss scrambles out of the ring. Bliss’ teammates surround and support her but she insists she’s fine. Once she gets back in the ring, she tags in Berenato, a trained MMA artist. She takes off the gloves and squares off with Glenncross as…

We go to commercial.

On the return, Morgan has Berenato in a headlock. She gets pushed off and trapped on the ropes by Bliss. Berenato seizes the opportunity to deliver a stiff clothesline. She tags in Bliss who stands on Morgan’s neck slamming it to the mat repeatedly. 2 count pinfall attempt and she keeps Morgan in her corner, tagging in Berenato. Berenato tags in Mandy Rose and Graves is very happy. Snapmare and kicks to the mid-section. She applies a submission, driving Morgan’s neck into her leg. Rollup attempt and a 1 count. Rose follows it with a jumping knee to the head of Morgan and another 1 count.

Rose drags Morgan back to her corner and tags in Berenato, who dishes knees to the head. She throws Morgan off the ropes for a knee to the chest. 1-2- kickout. Berenato traps Morgan in a body scissors. Morgan leans back and pins Berenato for a 2 count. Berenato sits up again and continues to squeeze with her thighs. Morgan tries to elbow out of it so Berenato just grabs her head and locks it tight with her arms. Morgan has nowhere to go. Morgan finally bridges into a pinfall attempt, which allows her to break free. She reaches for her corner. Berenato yanks her leg back towards her corner. She tags in Bliss.

Bliss misses an elbow drop, grabs Morgan’s leg and gets an enziguri for her efforts. Tag is made to Carmella who clotheslines Rose a few times who newly tagged in. Into the corner, she drives Rose’s head into her foot on the top rope. Back kick to the jaw of Rose. Bliss breaks up the pinfall attempt. Glenncross gets into the ring on Carmella’s behalf, twists the arm and slams Bliss down to the mat. Berenato rushes and spears Glenncross, holding on to her after the spear to push her out of the ring. Wow.

Rose returns to her feet, takes down Carmella for a bridging pinfall attempt. 2 count. Carmella reverses it and applies her Code of Silence leg submission. Rose taps out quickly.

Winner: Carmella, Liv Morgan & Nikki Glenncross via submission in 7 minutes

One cool point for booking 3 debuts for women in this 6-woman tag match. That’s a neat way to get each wrestler a little bit of time to show off their stuff, but to be supported by teammates at the same time. Nobody needs to feel too overwhelmed or nervous, and, instantly, some alliances are created. Who looked the fiercest? Berenato’s style lends itself to that description. Glenncross is a feisty wrestler, too. She’ll be tough to beat. Carmella and Alexa Bliss were the most well-known in the match and it’s a shame they won’t get more time in nXt to improve their craft.

GM William Regal is providing instructions to the security in the backstage area where TV cameras are set up for the exclusive interview with nXt champion Samoa Joe and #1 contender Shinsuke Nakamura. He tells Joe to behave during the interview.

A promo for Ember Moon is shown. She’ll be arriving on August 20th at Takeover: Brooklyn II to face Billie Kay in her debut match.

Final Segment

It’s Byron Saxton sitting in between Samoa Joe and Shinsuke Nakamura for the exclusive interview, leading into Takeover: Brooklyn II.

Joe and Nakamura are both very excited for their main event matchup. Saxton asks why Joe had such an issue with the way GM Regal booked this match. Joe shares that he had to jump through every hoop to get his shot. He had to beat many people, including a series with Sami Zayn and participating in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Tournament.
When Bayley asked for her shot, Regal checked with Asuka. When Nakamura wanted his shot, Regal never talked to Joe. Joe’s starting to wonder if Regal has it in for him.
Saxton asks if Nakamura is taking this match seriously. Nakamura says he is but comedy is his style.

Saxton mentions both competitors’ success across the world. Joe says they know each other very well. Nakamura trained at his dojo in LA. Nakamura doesn’t remember that.
Saxton asks if Joe respects Nakamura and he’s not too sure. Nakamura says he does, leans in towards Joe and smirks. Joe says he’s gonna respect him in Brooklyn. Joe wants to beat the respect into Nakamura and he tries to get at Nakamura. Regal says the interview is over and tells security to remove Joe from the room and that’s a wrap on this episode.

Anyone feel like this interview should’ve went a little longer? A little more insight on both wrestlers would have been nice.

One cool point for Nakamura because this guy is talking in a second language. He obviously doesn’t have an expansive vocabulary but he’s so good with intonation and mannerisms and facial expressions that he can keep things simple with his words. In this way, everything he says becomes all the more interesting, and, dare I say, captivating.

One cool point for Joe’s continuation of storyline. Once more, he brings up a legitimate complaint about GM Regal’s handling of this championship match booking. Should he lose the match to Nakamura, there may well be a very angry Samoa Joe in the ring next Wednesday, calling for Regal’s resignation. I’m not sure if Regal would fight Joe in a match but a feud between those two is clearly simmering.
