Opening Segment

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Round 1 Match: #DIY vs. Hoho Lun & Tian Bing

For those who might be wondering who #DIY is, it’s Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano.

Ciampa and Bing start things off. The two try to figure out each other’s strategies, running the ropes a few times and evading the other’s attacks. Bing knocks Ciampa down with a nasty front kick. He tosses him into the corner and tags in Lun. The two of them send Ciampa off the ropes and into their elbows. Quick cover by Lun does nothing. Lun tries to twist Ciampa’s arm but Ciampa escapes. He tags in Gargano. He whips Gargano into Lun but Lun evades it and hits Ciampa. Gargano throws Lun to the mat and kicks him in the head. As Lun pops up, it’s Ciampa slamming his head to the ground. Cover by Gargano...1...2...kickout by Lun.

Gargano slows things down with a heavy backhanded chop on Lun. He whips him to the opposite corner. Lun hops over him. They run the ropes and Lun catches Gargano with a kick, then a dropkick. He salutes the crowd and tags in Bing. Lun whips Bing into Gargano for a jumping knee. Lun follows up with the same then throws Gargano into a high kick to the chin by Bing. That’s followed up with a top rope kick by Lun! Bing pins
him for a close 2 count. Quite the series there.

Bing powerslams Gargano to the mat and locks in a tight headlock. Crowd chants for DIY, which brings Gargano to this feet, punching his way out of the submission hold. He and Bing exchange kicks until Gargano’s enziguri knocks Bing to the mat. Both men tag in their partners and it’s Ciampa rolling through Lun. Big clothesline. Powerbomb attempt but Lun escapes, landing on his feet. As Ciampa is pushed back to the ropes, Gargano tags in and hits Lun with a diving spear through the ropes! This sets up a superkick/knee strike to the head of Lun by DIY. 1-2-3. It’s over.

Winners: #DIY (Gargano & Ciampa) via pinfall in 5 minutes

One cool point for Gargano’s spear through the ropes on Lun. The quick execution of that move would have startled anybody. It’d be cool to see Lun and Bing wrestle together in the future but why do I get the impression that this was a one-off for them? Here’s hoping #DIY and The Revival get the whole show to wrestle their quarterfinal match.

Earlier today, Kota Ibushi says it was respect that brought he and TJ Perkins together, as a team, despite their Cruiserweight Classic matchup. Perkins says they will bring out the best in each other.

Up Next: Samoa Joe addresses the nXt universe.

Second Segment

“Hated” by Beartooth is nXt Takeover: Toronto’s official theme song!

Backstage, Samoa Joe is asked about his thought process during last week’s confrontation with Shinsuke Nakamura. Joe says he was testing the perimeter, not that he was afraid to get up close and personal with Nakamura. Nakamura dislocated his jaw; he dislocated Nakamura’s shoulder.

What you see now is a man who knows Joe could take him out for a long time. What you see is a scared champion, scared of what is inevitable, the next nXt champion: Samoa Joe.

Singles Match: Aliyah vs. Billie Kay w. Peyton Royce

Corey Graves says the Toronto Maple Leafs want to trade Auston Mathews to nXt for Bobby Roode.

Kay charges Aliyah immediately with a barrage of fists. Off the ropes, Aliyah gets hung up in the ropes by Kay, yanked to the mat and pinned for a 1 count. She clubs Aliyah in the back and slaps at her face. Aliyah doesn’t like that and delivers a set of right hands to Kay’s face. Off the ropes, a flipping head slam. She faces Kay from the opposite corner, now, and delivers a jumping kick to the chin of Kay. Enziguri from Aliyah after she counters Kay’s Irish whip, but Kay doesn’t go down. Aliyah tries to push her off the ropes but Kay counters it and knocks out Aliyah with a haymaker.

All of a sudden, the camera turns to see Liv Morgan at ringside, messing with Peyton Royce. This skirmish distracts Kay and Aliyah seizes the opportunity to roll her up from behind and pin her for the win!

Winner: Aliyah via pinfall in 3 minutes

Morgan jumps into the ring and attacks Kay. She has the upper hand momentarily until Royce enters. The crowd cheers as Aliyah returns to help out Morgan and the Australians are briefly outmatched. Kay quickly disposes of Morgan though. She grabs Aliyah and holds her in place for Royce to execute a running front kick to her head. Royce slams Morgan’s face into Kay’s knee. Miss Blue and Miss Red stand tall, boasting of their dominance to Morgan.

One cool point for Billie Kay and Peyton Royce who continue to make themselves more relevant by getting an official match win and a dominant post-match beatdown on 20% of the nXt Women’s Division. They seemed even nastier tonight and that’s the attitude they’ll need to make a memorable impression on fans. All the more interesting is that they’re doing so without involving themselves in the Women’s Championship title picture. A women’s feud that can stand alone from the title is an asset to nXt TV.

Up Next:”The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger will be in action.

Third Segment

Singles Match: “The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger vs. Noah Potjes

Dillinger counters Potjes’ wristlock very smoothly and transitions it into a quick snapmare. He follows this by flashing the “ten sign” at Potjes. Potjes shakes his head and tries to kick Dillinger. Dillinger pushes him down and steps on his hand. He brings Potjes up to his feet, but it’s Potjes sending Dillinger stumbling with a strong right. He lays into Dillinger with boots and fists, but takes a break to mock the “ten”.

Dillinger takes offense and retorts with a few chops, left hands and a takedown, causing Potjes to retreat to the corner. Dillinger stomps him down there and then lowers his kneepads. Tyebreaker. It’s over.

Winner: ”The Perfect 10” Tye Dillinger via pinfall in 2 minutes

Post-match, Tom Phillips interviews Dillinger on the stage. Dillinger says the only glorious thing Roode has done lately is run. Suddenly, it’s Bobby Roode attacking Dillinger on the stage, pummelling him with his fists. He delivers the jumping implant DDT, knocking Dillinger out. Roode yells, “You want me? You got me!” He poses for the boos of the crowd.

One cool point for Dillinger who needed a strong win like this to remind fans of his greatness. One cool point for Roode who executed a surprise attack on Dillinger, reminding all of us that he’s in control. I think Dillinger will benefit from this high profile feud, but Roode is such a smart wrestler. He’s not making any mistakes and I think he’s a few months away from a title shot.

Up Next: Asuka will be in action.

Fourth Segment

“Devil’s Calling” by Parkway Drive is another official theme song for nXt Takeover: Toronto.

Backstage, TM61 is asked about facing Team Aries in the quarterfinals of the Dusty Rhodes Classic. Nick says Team Aries were a great team back in the day, but, right now, this is the most important team of all. Shane says it’s more than family. Families don’t get to choose each other but they did. They think with one mind and one fist. Nick says Shane says strange things but they are the mighty and the mighty don’t kneel.

Non-Title Match: Asuka (c) vs. Thea Trinidad

Both ladies try to kick each other first. Off the ropes, Asuka evades Trinidad and does a bit of mocking via hip shaking. This prompts Trinidad to charge her, miss, bounce off the ropes and receive a hip attack from Asuka. Asuka begs for Trinidad to hit her. Trinidad responds and eventually pisses off Asuka who gets all fired up. Trinidad defends a charge in the corner by bringing her knees up. She tries to kick Asuka but Asuka catches her foot and traps her. She gives her a German suplex, rolling through it to apply a vicious armbar submission. Trinidad doesn’t hold on very long.

Winner: Asuka via submission in 2 minutes

Post-match, nXt General Manager William Regal appears on the ramp and applauds Asuka for her continued dominance of the women’s division. He scouted the world for her next opponent at Takeover: Toronto.

In a video message, we see...the returning Mickie James! She reminds Asuka that she helped lay the foundation for her and the Women’s Revolution. Now, she’s coming back to take the nXt Women’s Championship. Get the UN on the phone because there’ll be an international incident, in Toronto, when they fight.

One cool point for Asuka because of her mocking dance on Trinidad. Her arrogance might have been at an all-time high during this match, and I liked it. Also, the prospect of a championship match against Mickie James should be of great interest to fans. If James shows up in good shape, they’ll have an exciting match.

Backstage, Paul Ellering is with his team, the Authors of Pain. He says this is their house of pain. He’s interrupted by a question from a reporter on the progress their team has made. Ellering says the plan and strategy is being executed perfectly. As for Mr. Jose and Mr. Swann, they have a fine future ahead but they will not advance in this tournament. Both Authors share a few aggressive words but they’re not in English.

Up Next: The final tag match of the first round Tag Team Classic.

Final Segment

Next Week: Authors Of Pain w. Paul Ellering vs. No Way Jose & Rich Swann.
Also, SAnitY will be in action.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Round 1 Match: TJ Perkins & Kota Ibushi vs. Lince Dorado & Mustafa Ali

A little Hell In A Cell PPV promotion reminds us that TJ Perkins will defend the Cruiserweight Championship against Brian Kendrick.

Perkins and Dorado begin this matchup with some fast-paced transition work using the ropes. Perkins catches Dorado with a hip toss and quick cover for a 1 count. Perkins shows off his tumbling mid-wristlock. Dorado does the same. The two evade one another’s attacks and kip up simultaneously. This prompts both men to tag in their partners and the crowd cheers.

Ibushi and Ali lock hands and engage in a battle of strength. Ibushi pushes Ali’s hands to the mat, pinning him a few times but Ali pushes up each time. Ali escapes by allowing Ibushi to pull him up off the mat to springboard off of the top rope. Off the ropes, Ali with a dropkick and a smooth kip up. Ibushi hits him with a dropkick of his own, sending Ali to the corner as...

We go to commercial.

Perkins has Ali on the return, hitting him with a suplex. Back body slam for a 2 count. Perkins follows that up with a kneebar. Ali frantically tries to get to the bottom rope and he succeeds. He replies with a right hand on Perkins to create space and tags in Dorado. They throw Perkins off the ropes. Perkins exits to the apron. Ali charges and Perkins drops to the outside. Ali ducks, allowing Dorado to fly over him and the top rope to connect with Perkins. Dorado rolls Perkins back in, climbs the top rope and splashes him for a 2 count.

He tags in Ali who twists Perkins’ arm and then drives his knee into his back. Perkins tries to escape but Ali changes from his knee to a foot to the back, keeping the pressure on the lower back. Perkins is diving for a tag but Ali holds on to his feet and won’t let him. Ali knocks Ibushi off the apron. Effortless neckbreaker on Perkins. 1-2- kickout!
Ali jaws at Perkins a bit and applies a side headlock. Perkins fights back and out of the hold. Off the ropes, Perkins connects with a wheelbarrow springboard into a bulldog on Ali. Both men are down but slowly crawl to their respective corners to tag in their partners.

Once they do, it’s all Ibushi. He nails Dorado with chops and a right boot. Ibushi attempts a powerbomb but Dorado escapes it and slaps him in the face. Double team attempt from Ali and Dorado but Ibushi does a back flip double kick on both men! He charges Dorado in the corner who kicks him in the chin. He rushes Ibushi but Ibushi counters it into a powerslam.

Perkins tags himself in as Ibushi leaps to the second rope for a moonsault. Perkins with the splash from the top and a pinfall attempt. Ali interrupts it but gets sent to the outside. Ibushi runs, springboards off of the second rope in the corner and moonsaults Ali.

In the ring, Dorado misses a dropkick. Perkins gets it, knocking Dorado into the second rope. Perkins connects with a sort of 619 type move. He launches himself at Dorado who catches him for a 2 count pin. The counters are many in this one. Dorado tries to pin Perkins but he fails. Hurricanrana from Dorado and the pinning attempt is interrupted by Ibushi. Dorado tags in Ali and Perkins is able to trap him almost immediately in the kneebar! Ali taps. It’s over.

Winner: TJ Perkins & Kota Ibushi via submission in 10 minutes

One cool point for everyone involved in this match. The athleticism of these 4 men was quite impressive. In a match that could have easily gone the other way, it was Perkins’ kneebar that made the difference. Their match against SAnitY, next week, is an intriguing one. This is a case of speed vs. power and I’ve a feeling power is going to win.

In other second round matchups, we have Authors of Pain vs. No Way Jose & Rich Swann, The Revival vs. #DIY and TM61 vs. Team Aries. Will we see any surprises in the next few weeks?

Looking forward to your cool point suggestions and comments on tonight’s episode.

Peace!
