New details have surfaced regarding how John Cena’s role as host of WrestleMania 42 came together.
Despite now being announced as the official host of WrestleMania 42, that position reportedly was not part of the original plan for Cena late last year.
As of his retirement match in December, the idea of Cena serving as host for WWE’s biggest annual event had not yet been discussed. However, things began to shift in early 2026, when Cena was approached about the opportunity.
He ultimately learned of the plans in February and agreed to take on the hosting role.
The move aligns with Cena’s current agreement with WWE, as he previously signed a new long-term deal with the company that does not include any in-ring competition.
It’s a notable pivot.
WWE reportedly made the decision to position Cena as host in an effort to boost interest and drive ticket sales for WrestleMania 42, leveraging his mainstream appeal and long-standing connection with fans.
While Cena won’t be stepping back into the ring, his presence is still expected to play a major role in the overall presentation of the event.
WrestleMania 42 is scheduled to take place on April 18 and April 19 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, NV.
