Chelsea Green says there was a point where she and Paul “Triple H” Levesque discussed taking her WWE character in a more serious direction, but those plans quickly faded away.
Speaking on the Complex Graps Wrestling Podcast (see video below), the newly crowned Interim WWE Women’s Champion recalled sitting down with Triple H about dialing back some of her comedic antics in favor of being presented as a more serious in-ring competitor. However, after the conversation, Green found herself right back in a brief comedy segment that ended in defeat, leading her to believe the company preferred to keep her current character intact.
“About a year ago, I had a conversation with Hunter,” Green began. “We sat down and we talked about me going in a more serious direction. Literally the next week, I was put in a comedy spot that lasted like 30 seconds and I was pinned. I’m like, ‘Well, I fear we’re here to stay.’ And we never, him and I never spoke about it again. It’s such a funny conversation to think about because we were like, ‘Yeah, I’ll stop doing this, and I’ll stop doing that, and I’ll look more serious, and I’ll be more serious, and I’ll do my moves.’ And then I literally went and took the Jaded (Jade Cargill’s signature move).”
Looking back, Green believes embracing her over-the-top personality was the right decision. She said she has found what works best for her and sees no reason to move away from a character that has connected with fans.
“I feel like I found my niche,” she continued. “I found my lane. Why did I try to get out of the lane? The lane works. It’s my lane. I made the lane. I’m going to stay in the lane. I invite others to come in and try it, but at the end of the day, I know that what I do, I do it better than anyone else. That’s why it works. That’s why people believe it, and that’s why they turned me babyface naturally, because everyone was like, ‘Wait, this is so stupid. We like it. She’s so annoying. We like it.’”
