A previous report linking El Grande Americano to an upcoming World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns is no longer accurate.
WrestlingHeadlines reported on August 5 that Americano was rumored to be in line to challenge Reigns when WWE Raw heads to Mexico City on September 14. The original article noted that the match was unconfirmed and had not been finalized.
That report has since been corrected at the source.
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported that the previous claim that El Grande Americano would win the tournament and face Reigns is “not accurate.”
WWE has since provided additional confirmation by unveiling the official eight-man tournament bracket. El Grande Americano is not included in the field.
As WrestlingHeadlines reported on August 7, the tournament consists of the following first-round matches:
- WWE Raw, August 10: Penta vs. Laredo Kid
- AAA, August 15: Psycho Clown vs. La Parka
- WWE Raw, August 17: Dragon Lee vs. El Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr.
- WWE Raw, August 17: Rey Fenix vs. El Fiscal
The winner of the tournament will challenge Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 episode of Raw in Mexico City.
El Grande Americano remains scheduled for a major match in Mexico, as he is set to challenge Dominik Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship at TripleMania 34. However, there is currently no support for the earlier report that Americano will be Reigns’ opponent on Raw.
