WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio has given some thought to when it might be time to finally hang up his boots.
Mysterio has been wrestling professionally since the late 1980s and, even at 51 years old, remains an active member of the WWE roster.
During a recent appearance on What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon (full episode below), the legendary luchador admitted that retirement has been on his mind, although he doesn’t feel like he’s reached that point yet.
“Most recently, I have been battling with, is it getting close to my time to retire,” Mysterio said. “I certainly don’t feel like I am. Like, my body is saying, ‘Okay, now it’s time,’ and I always like to listen to my body.”
He wasn’t done there.
“I am enjoying the position of being AAA GM and seeing young rising stars come up in the game,” he continued. “But at the end of the day, it’s like, man, I really enjoy what I do on every level. Obviously, I enjoy wrestling a lot more than being behind the cameras. But I do understand that opportunities are very little, and there’s others that are going to come before me right now because it’s time to give the spotlight to other superstars, especially in the lucha libre world. So I am okay with that.”
Mysterio’s comments come during a period that has seen several legendary names call time on their in-ring careers. John Cena retired in late 2025, while Hiroshi Tanahashi and AJ Styles followed in early 2026. Brock Lesnar also retired following WWE SummerSlam earlier this month.
While Mysterio knows his own farewell will eventually come, he doesn’t appear interested in putting a date on it.
“I think as far as tapping out, never say never, but it can just pop up one day, just out of nowhere, and say, ‘Okay, now it’s time,’” Mysterio said.
