– Baron Corbin made the first successful defense of his newly won WWE United States Championship in the opening match on the August 7 post-SummerSlam episode of WWE SmackDown from Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, PA., a WWE SummerSlam 2026 rematch against former title-holder Trick Williams.

– Later on during the 8/7 SmackDown show in Philly, it was announced that Corbin’s next U.S. title defense will take place on next Friday night’s blue brand show. In his second defense of the title, Corbin will defend the United States Championship against Carmelo Hayes on the August 14 episode of WWE SmackDown in Boston, MA., which is Hayes’ hometown.

– Speaking of upcoming title matches, Kevin Owens, who earned No. 1 Contender status and a future shot against Undisputed WWE Champion CM Punk with his win in the fatal-four-way match at WWE SummerSlam 2026 over the weekend in Minneapolis, MN., is looking to cash-in his guaranteed title shot at the upcoming WWE SmackDown show in two weeks. The August 21 episode of WWE SmackDown emanates from Owens’ home country of Canada, with the show taking place from Toronto, Ontario. Reinstated SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis confirmed Owens’ interest in an 8/21 title tilt against Punk in Toronto, and mentioned how he would “make some calls” to try and get it booked for him.

– And speaking of Owens, he helped kick things off on the 8/7 SmackDown in Philly, coming to the ring after a brief in-ring verbal exchange between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes, and confronting Punk. After the two had an intense, face-to-face verbal back-and-forth of their own, things got physical and the two had to be separated. The final words before they came to blows came from Owens, who stated the following, with the profanity at the end airing live-and-uncensored on the broadcast.
“I should also thank you because you’ve also shown me what not to do. What not to become. How not to treat people around you. You showed me that somebody’s ego can get so inflated, they actually start believing the crap that comes out of their mouth when they call themselves the Best in the World. Dude, you must be so lonely on that pedestal you put yourself on. Meanwhile, thank you. Because seeing what you’ve become has made me determined to not let this business turn me into a miserable piece of sh*t like you.”

– For what it’s worth, WWE introduced Chelsea Green as “the new Women’s Champion” and not the “Interim Women’s Champion” when she came out to the ring for her elaborate Chelsea Green Women’s Championship Celebration segment. Whether or not this means Rhea Ripley, the lineal women’s champion, has been stripped or forced to relinquish has not yet been officially clarified by WWE.

– WWE kicked off the 8/7 SmackDown show on the USA Network and Netflix with a special “In Memory Of” tribute in honor of the late, great WWE Hall of Fame legend Dory Funk Jr. As noted, the former NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion passed away earlier this week at the age of 85.
– And finally, in addition to the previously mentioned Baron Corbin vs. Carmelo Hayes match for the WWE United States Championship, two more title tilts were officially advertised for the August 14 episode of WWE SmackDown in Boston, MA. Joining Corbin-Hayes for the men’s U.S. title is Tiffany Stratton vs. Jacy Jayne for the WWE Women’s U.S. title, as well as Damian Priest & R-Truth vs. The War Raiders vs. The MFTs for the WWE Tag-Team Championships.
