Zilla Fatu has officially arrived in WWE NXT.
Fatu made his debut during Tuesday night’s main event between Cruz Montana and Grayson Waller, which was scheduled to determine the No. 1 contender to Tony D’Angelo’s NXT Championship.
The match ended in a disqualification after Fatu hit the ring and attacked both competitors. He followed up with splashes to Montana and Waller before turning his attention to D’Angelo at ringside and declaring that there was a new sheriff in town.
Unlike some recent WWE signings who have debuted under new identities, Vic Joseph specifically identified Fatu as Zilla Fatu on commentary, indicating that he will likely retain the name going forward.
With Fatu wrecking the No. 1 contender’s match, D’Angelo’s challenger for NXT Heatwave remains up in the air.
Two championship matches have also been made official for Heatwave on August 30.
Kelani Jordan will challenge Kendal Grey for the NXT Women’s Championship after the two crossed paths during Tuesday’s show. Kali Armstrong was initially in the ring making her case for a title opportunity when Jordan interrupted and argued that she deserved one as well.
Grey, still selling the ear injury suffered in last week’s NXT Underground match, eventually came to the ring and revealed that she had spoken with NXT General Manager Robert Stone. Grey said she was tired of hearing Jordan complain about not receiving an opportunity and agreed to defend the championship on a date of Jordan’s choosing.
Jordan selected Heatwave.
Elsewhere, ZARIA successfully defended the NXT Women’s North American Championship against Wren Sinclair after a brawl involving Saquon Shugars and Dion Lennox provided a distraction that allowed ZARIA to score the pin.
Sinclair subsequently pushed for another opportunity, offering to put her WWE Women’s Speed Championship on the line in a title unification match. Stone was initially skeptical but ultimately agreed, setting up ZARIA vs. Sinclair with both championships at stake at Heatwave.
Several matches have also been announced for next week’s NXT.
AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio contacted Stone during Tuesday’s show, with the two agreeing to a Fatal Four-Way No. 1 Contender’s Match. The winner will challenge AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix on the August 25 episode.
Mysterio and Stone suggested EK Prosper and La Parka for the match, while Romeo Moreno and Tristan Angels later entered themselves into the mix to complete the field.
Jackson Drake will also face Shiloh Hill in a match with major Heatwave implications for Vanity Project. If Drake wins, he will receive an NXT North American Championship opportunity, while Ricky Smokes and Brad Baylor will challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championships. That scenario could potentially force Myles Borne to compete twice at Heatwave.
If Drake loses, however, Vanity Project will be shut out of Heatwave entirely.
Also announced for next week is Kendal Grey & Wren Sinclair vs. Kelani Jordan & Kali Armstrong following their confrontation on Tuesday night.
Finally, the WWE Speed Championship will be on the line when OTM’s Lucien Price challenges Lexis King.
