AEW Dynamite 2/22/23
Live from the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona with Taz, Tony Schiavone, and Excalibur on the call tonight!
Match #1. AEW All-Atlantic Championship: Orange Cassidy (c) vs. Wheeler Yuta
Cassidy extends the hand for the Code of Honor but Yuta takes a swipe at him. Chain wrestling here with both guys exchanging pinning combinations and two counts. The catch-as-catch-can wrestling continues with Cassidy almost catching Yuta in his own cradle. Yuta retreats to the outside as Claudio Castagnoli is here. Castagnoli slaps Yuta in the face and Yuta responds with some intensity in the ring. Lariat by Yuta who follows up with a suicide dive to the outside. Yuta sends Cassidy crashing into the guard rail several times before tossing him over the timekeeper’s table and the fans are NOT happy with Yuta’s behavior. Castagnoli returns to the back, but Yuta posts Cassidy for good measure. Yuta lays in some heavy chops to Cassidy in the corner but Cassidy begs off with his hands up before putting his hands in his pockets… to which Yuta delivers some vicious elbows to the defenseless Cassidy. Cassidy is able to muster a handsfree dropkick before sending Yuta into the top turnbuckle about ten times. Manhattan drop and a step-up enziguiri by Yuta who comes off the top with a lariat for two. A dropkick from Yuta sends Cassidy to the outside as we head to PIP. Some technical difficulties for me here as I’m back and both men are spitting in each other’s face. Forearms exchanged in the center of the ring as the crowd is on their feet. Stereo elbow strikes stun both men, and a pair of clotheslines both guys to the ground. Excalibur reminds us we have a 20-minute time limit, which is something I didn’t recall for the All-Atlantic matches. Yuta grabs the ear of Cassidy to drop him to the apron. Back body drop by Cassidy to Yuta on the apron, and a diving DDT to the floor off the apron! Back in the ring, satellite DDT by Cassidy! Beach Break by Cassidy but Yuta counters with a piledriver! One, two, no! Hammer and anvil elbows by Yuta who looks for the seatbelt but Cassidy counters with some elbows of his own! Seatbelt attempt by Cassidy but Yuta counters with his own cradle for two. Orange Punch by Cassidy! 2.99! Beach Break lands hard but NO! Yuta out before two! Orange Punch by Cassidy and this one is over!
Winner and STILL AEW All-Atlantic Champion: Orange Cassidy
Rating: ***3/4. This match ruled. Great opener, Cassidy continues his dominance with the All-Atlantic title and Yuta brought the heat. Cassidy had to get his hands dirty in this one, and he did just that. Strong showing for both guys.
After the match, Cassidy looks for the hug and the crowd is begging for it. Castagnoli comes out from the back and locks eyes with Yuta, who decides better of it and declines the hug.
Renee is in the back with Evil Uno and Hangman Page. Page says he’s begged the Dark Order to stop but Uno has had enough of it. Uno wants Page to stay in the back tonight because Page doesn’t think Dark Order is on their level.
Ricky Starks is here and the crowd is ready for it. Starks realizes the rematch isn’t going to happen, so Starks is moving on. Starks has an open contract for a match against him at Revolution…
Enter… Chris Jericho. Womp womp.
Jericho says he knows Starks wants the rematch but he can’t have it, so good luck with the open challenge.
Pretty Peter Avalon is here to accept!
… and he eats a Judas Effect for his trouble.
Jericho now hits the ring and Starks reminds him that he used to be a legend that would beat a guy one on one, without the JAS. Starks thinks he could beat him one on one, and Jericho agrees. Jericho is Le Champion, the GOAT, and of course he can beat Ricky Starks one on one. Jericho says he would sign the contract agreeing to a match with no interference, but he doesn’t have a pen.
Starks does.
Jericho has the pen up… almost like… SOMEONE JUST MADE THE LIST. Jericho signs the contract and we’re on for Revolution. Nobody outsmarts the Ocho!

Match #2. The Acclaimed vs. The Firm
Caster raps about Moriarty’s mom and Big Bill being S A W F T. Hilarious. Caster and Moriarty start. Arm drag by Caster to start but Moriarty sends Caster into the ropes, into a waiting knee from Big Bill. Sunset flip/back stabber combo by The Acclaimed get a two on Moriarty as Bowens is legal now. Scissor me, timbers but no! Bill shoves Bowens off the top rope as Moriarty retakes control of Caster in the ring. Big Bill in now, putting the boots to Caster as he mocks the scissor. Bowens gets the blind tag as does Moriarty. Bowens with a kicking combinatino and a Kitaro Crusher. Spinning inverted Attitude Adjustment by Bowens. Big Bill is in now and he eats a super kick. Bill runs through Bowens and takes out Daddy Ass and Caster. The Gunn’s are here and jump Daddy Ass at ringside. Caster and Bowens make the save and post Big Bill on the outside. Back in the ring, Moriarty hits an elevated flatliner for a long two count. Bowens ducks a scissor kick and hits The Arrival. Tag to Caster… Mic Drop!
Winners: The Acclaimed
Rating: *3/4. The Acclaimed got a win heading into Revolution, but that’s all that was accomplished here. The Gunn’s jumping their dad had no effect on the match, and The Firm are really underachieving.
Tony Schiavone welcomes Christian Cage to the stage, a week after pepper spraying Jungle Boy. Christian can’t even make it to the ramp however, as Jungle Boy jumps him! Jungle Boy grabs a pair of chairs and it’s a one man Con-Chair-To! Jungle Boy raises his chair… but looks like he’s thinking better of it. Jungle Boy can’t do it! No, he can… but Christian low blows him! Christian wraps the chair around the back of Jungle Boy and now beats his head off the chair on the ground about a dozen times.
Samoa Joe responds to Wardlow and tells him the biggest mistake Wardlow can ever make… is coming back.
Match #3. Saraya w/ Toni Storm vs. Skye Blue
Saraya flips everyone off on the way to the ring and slaps Blue in the face. Cazadora by Blue sends Saraya into the turnbuckle. Blue goes up top but Storm distracts her, allowing Saraya to yank her off the top to the ground. Snap suplex by Storm to Blue on the outside, as Saraya distracts the referee. Boot by Blue to a charging Saraya, but Saraya responds with some elbow strikes. Blue now set up on the top turnbuckle, but fights Saraya off. Cross body by Blue off the top. Jaw breaker by Blue followed by a dropkick to the side of the head. Blue goes for the cover but Storm distracts the referee. Superkick by Saraya and Saraya locks in a double arm trapped Sharpshooter.
Winner: Saraya
Rating: NR. Not long enough to matter, but a win for Saraya makes sense.
Saraya and Storm grab the spray paint, but Hayter and Baker are here to make the save. Saraya and Storm retreat up the ramp… but here’s Ruby Soho. Ruby wants Hayter and doesn’t seem to care about Saraya or Storm.
Brian Danielson is here and hits us with the Mic Foley hometown pop. MJF said he hates Bryan Danielson, but MJF is the one that made Danielson jump through hoops and put a bounty on his head but…
Here’s MJF.
MJF is the guy that’s gotten thrown away by anyone he ever opens up to. MJF finally met a girl, got down on one knee, and wanted to start a family… and she left him. “You deserve it” chants ring throughout the arena, in a tremendous moment. MJF is unlovable and the only thing he has in this life is the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. That title is the only thing stopping MJF from grabbing a fistful of pills and calling it a day, but everyone loves Bryan Danielson. Danielson has a beautiful family and takes all of it for granted.
MJF hates Danielson because Danielson’s had more head trauma than anyone in this business… and he’s still in MJF’s sport. Every time Danielson steps foot in the ring he’s saying wrestling is more important than his children, and his family. Danielson is no better than his worthless drug addicted mentor William Regal, who MJF had sent to the hospital. MJF is going to punish Danielson for trying to take away the one thing that MJF has in this life. MJF will punish Danielson, but now, now MJF wants to speak to Danielson’s children.
“Don’t you bring my children in to this or I’m going to kick the shit out of you.”
MJF addresses Danielson’s children, and he’s going to make sure “Dada” will never be able to play with them again. Uncle Max is going to take his fist and hit Dada in the head with it over and over again, and then he will give him a present. Early.. onset.. C..T…
Danielson double legs MJF and pounds him in the middle of the ring. Security detail is here for the pull apart brawl and the fans are losing it! Danielson gets free and dives across the ring, and MJF does the same. MJF finally breaks free and retreats to the outside and Danielson absolutely LEVELS him with a running elbow and MJF is out!
Schiavone is in the back with Jamie Hayter and Dr. Britt Baker DMD. Hayter says both Ruby and Saraya deserve a title shot, and let’s make it a triple threat match for the title. “Ruby, Saraya, I’mma beat both of you bitches!”
Match #4. Revolution Tag Team Battle Royal
Both members of each have to be eliminated. Best of luck with this one. Menard and Parker haven’t gotten in the ring yet. Lucha Brothers paired up with Rush and Jarrett. Penta and Nese now trading shots on the apron. MARK BRISCOE IS HERE AND HE ATTACKS WOODS AND NESE, AS WELL AS STERLING. MOMENT OF THE MATCH SO FAR. Fear Factor on the apron by Penta and Nese is gone. Ariya Daivari gets gorilla pressed on to Nese and Sterling outside, so they’re gone. Aussie Open was eliminated. Blade gone after a double team by Dark Order. Rolling elbows by Butcher to both members of Dark Order. Reynolds caught coming off the top by Butcher who throws him on to the ring post and outside. Vance with a pump kick to Penta but winds up getting tossed. Penta gets dumped by Rush. Rising knee by Rush to Fenix but Fenix tosses Rush to the apron. Fenix walks the ropes and punts Rush to the floor! Best Friends, Fenix, Dark Oder, Butcher, Jarrett are left. Butcher tosses Silver over the top. Menard and Parker sneak up behind Best Friends but they stay in. DanHausen curses Menard and Parker who get dumped by Best Friends. Dante Martin, Fenix, and Trent vs. Jay Lethal, Jeff Jarrett, and Butcher it seems as we head to commercial. Back from break and Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal have eliminated both Fenix and Dante. Jarrett and Lethal are alone with Trent as the last three men. Satnam Singh is at ringside making sure both Jarrett and Lethal don’t get eliminated. Tornado DDT by Trent to Lethal. Jarrett is here… The Stroke! Trent skins the cat though as Jarrett does the Fargo Strut! Lethal now dumps Trent as both Jarrett and Lethal strut together… but Orange Cassidy makes the save. Trent dumps Lethal! Trent dumps Jarrett but Singh catches him and places him back in the ring. Trent thinks he’s won but Jarrett is here… a second Stroke! Jarrett dumps Trent and gets the win!
Winners: Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett
Rating: ***. This battle royal started off as a complete cluster ef, but man oh man, did it get fun down the stretch. Jarrett’s influence on a lot of these finishes is obvious, and in the best way. Kind of corny, carny, Memphis… but darn it, it’s entertaining. Nice touch with Singh making it impossible for Jarrett and Lethal to lose.
Tony Khan is here and it’s time for the big announcement. Tony brings in Adam Cole… Bay Bay! Adam Cole said next month, there is a new weekly one-hour television series called AEW: All Access.
There’s more good news. Adam Cole will return the same night on Dynamite!
Match #5. Jon Moxley vs. Evil Uno
Uno starts hot and jumps Moxley in the corner. Chops exchanging early on in this one. Big boot by Uno sends Moxley to the floor, as Uno whips Moxley with his leather vest. Superplex attempt by Uno but Moxley tries to rip Uno’s mask off, much to the chagrin of the crowd. Uno boots Moxley off the apron and into the crowd. Uno goes up top and comes off with a somersault senton to the floor! Wow! Uno mounts Moxley and delivers some big ground and pound! Moxley escapes and sends Uno into the steel steps, more than once. Uno is bleeding profusely from under the mask. Piledriver by Uno! Make that two! One, two, no! Moxley is up and ducks under Uno, locking in the rear naked choke. Moxley flips Uno over and gets the Bulldog choke. Uno is fading as the blood is shooting out of his face as Moxley squeezes. Moxley sinks the hooks in and the referee stops the match.
Winner: Jon Moxley
Rating: **3/4. This one was short and sweet, and that’s okay. Uno is clearly not the main eventer that Moxley is, but the story was great and Uno brought it. Moxley outwrestled Uno to get the win, but had to wade through some waters of anger and frustration to get there. Good stuff.
Dark Order is here to save Uno! Reynolds and Silver attack Moxley but Castagnoli and Yuta are here for the brawl. Hangman’s (new) music hits and he’s here with a pair of brass knuckles covered in barbed wire… and cracks Moxley! Moxley is bleeding profusely, as usual. Page mounts Moxley and brutalizes his face! Moxley is COVERED in blood but escapes a Buckshot as we fade to black!
Final Thoughts: Welp, the “important announcement” from Tony Khan was obviously somewhat underwhelming, but this show was made to continue the build to Revolution and that’s what it did. MJF and Danielson took a very real, and very personal turn, which has me far more invested. Page and Moxley took another step in their feud, showing us that Page isn’t afraid to get down and dirty, especially when you introduce a barbed wire covered pair of brass knuckles. The AEW World Women’s Championship triple threat match should be great, but I can’t help but feel like the story isn’t fully flushed out yet. Also, my favorite Ricky Starks and Chris Jericho segment of all time. More Aussie Open, too. 7/10.
