AEW DYNAMITE RESULTS (4/22/2020)
Cody Kicks Off This Week’s Show
This week’s show opens up with Cody Rhodes isolated in some kind of control center / production room in a Captain Kirk from Star Trek like commanders chair.
“The American Nightmare” talks about the challenge on the horizon from Jake “The Snake” Roberts’ mercinary, Lance “The Murderhawk Monster” Archer, as well as his spot in the ongoing TNT Championship Tournament.
Cody wraps up the opening promo segment talking about “complacency,” before graphics of the remaining quarterfinalists in the ongoing tournament are shown.
“Now we find out, who has enough of it,” he concludes.
Chris Jericho & Tony Schiavone Run Down Tonight’s Lineup
From there, “Le Champion” Chris Jericho in an outfit only the leader of The Inner Circle could pull off, is introduced by Tony Schiavone.
The two-man announce team run down some of the action scheduled for tonight, including the return of “BROKEN” Matt Hardy, the return of Kenny Omega, Brodie Lee, Scorpio’s Sky journey to AEW, checking in with The Bubbley Bunch and the latest action in the TNT Championship Tournament.
TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinals
Sammy Guevara vs. Darby Allin
The pre-match vignette for the opening match for this week’s AEW Dynamite, Sammy Guevara vs. Darby Allin in a Quarterfinal Match in the TNT Championship Tournament, airs.
The music of “The Spanish God” of The Inner Circle — Sammy Guevara — hits as the TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinalist makes his way to the ring as the camera closes in on a sign for him from one of the “fans,” which is actually Shawn Spears talking about Guevara owing him money.
Now the vignette for Darby Allin airs, in black-and-white with cool music playing as usual, airs. He then makes his bad-ass ring entrance as we’re set for our opening contest.
The two brawl before the bell even sounds for several minutes, including a huge high spot with Guevara laying Allin across a ladder bridge set-up from the ring apron to the ring barricade and crashing onto him after flying off the top-rope inside the ring. The ladder, however, did not break, and the two collapsed off to the side.
Ringside physicians and other AEW officials check on Allin to see if he is even physically able to compete in this match, which has still yet to officially get underway, as we head to our first commercial break of the evening.
We return and the match still hasn’t started. Jericho points out that they’re going to sound the bell and if Allin doesn’t make it to the ring in time, he will lose via count out and Guevara will advance. He ultimately does make it and the match is now officially underway.
Allin starts to take over, as he catches Guevara in a reverse ankle lock on the top rope. He yanks Guevara’s boot off and twists on the ankle more. Now Guevara starts to fight back, with only one boot on. He is selling the foot/ankle with the boot off like he can’t walk or put any weight on it.
Guevara fighting back now and we see the result on Allin’s face, as his nose is busted and blood is pouring down his face. On the mat, Allin catches “The Spanish God” in another ankle lock. Eventually, Guevara and Allin end up in a punching exchange on the mat. They make it to their feet, Allin wipes his own blood all over his face ala BJ Penn (with someone else’s blood) in the UFC, or Tyson Fury (with someone else’s blood) in boxing, and they exchange punches again.
The two end up mixing in some moves with their all-out brawling striking match, which leaves Allin laid out on the floor outside the ring after Guevara blasts him with a big shot as the show heads to another mid-match commercial break.
We’re back from the break and we immediately see Allin going for a lope suicida after charging across the ring to build some momentum, however when he dives through the ropes, Guevara moves just in time and Allin goes face-first into the ring barricade. Allin’s face, which was already bloody, is even more bloody now. Blood spots are actually on the mat in areas of the ring, ala MMA fights.
Guevara gets Allin back in the ring, he goes for his insane flipping finisher off the top-rope, but takes too long to get the cover and Allin manages to kick out at two. As replays of the impressive move are shown, Jericho points out that had Guevara hit it and get the pin immediately, he would have won.
Allin fires and goes for the Coffin Drop, however Guevara catches him in the Torture Rack position. Allin reverses out and catches Guevara in a technical roll-up that he calls The Last Supper. 1-2-3. Darby Allin wins and advances in the TNT Championship Tournament. He will meet Cody Rhodes in one of the semi-final matches in the next tournament bout.

“BROKEN Brilliance” & Regular Matt Hardy Address Chris Jericho
“BROKEN” Matt Hardy is shown and he addresses Christopher Jericho. He recalls offering The Elite Deletion match at The Hardy Compound to the leader of The Inner Circle.
He claims he watched waiting to see Jericho’s response to the challenge, but instead all he saw was The Bubbley Bunch and Jericho spilling orange juice on his counter.
Hardy talks about Guevara being the only one who was man enough to even mention his name. He claims he will mash him up into a bufungle and eat him and sentence him to deletion if he comes to the Hardy Compound to fight Jericho’s battle for him.
He says the reason Jericho won’t mention his name is because he can’t handle his “BROKEN Brilliance.” He claims maybe he should talk to the unkillable vessel known as Matt Hardy.
The regular Matt Hardy in a leather jacket and t-shirt is now shown, continuing to address Jericho and other people in AEW, but as himself instead of “BROKEN” Matt Hardy.
He talks about making his AEW debut and how he made chaos. He calls Jericho a meglomaniac and says AEW is not just a platform for Chris Jericho, or even Matt Hardy. He says it’s a platform for the future, as they are trying to keep the business alive for the next generations after us.
He says he will fight to protect that and he will do so by kicking each member of The Inner Circle’s ass one-by-one until he gets to Chris Jericho himself. That ends the promo and we shoot back to an angry Chris Jericho who wants Hardy to “shut his fat mouth.” We head back to commercial break.
Alan Angels vs. Kenny Omega
Alan Angels, also known as “100 Proof” and “The Southpaw Serial Killer,” is introduced as he makes his way to the ring. Out next is his opponent for this evening.
In what is our second match inside the squared circle here on AEW Dynamite, one-half of the AEW Tag-Team Champions — Kenny Omega — makes his way out to the ring wearing the AEW Tag-Team Championship belt.
The AAA Mega Champion and one-half of the AEW Tag-Team Champions now stands in the ring waiting on the bell as “The Southpaw Serial Killer” circles the ring on the floor. He re-enters the ring, the bell sounds and the two circle each other.
Angels shoves Omega after a lock-up. Great go-behind but a pop in the mouth starts off the offensive run here in the early goings for Omega. Jericho goes on an anti-Omega rant on commentary, referring to him as a “pumpkin-headed dipsh*t” before being told to calm down by Skee-Vone. He goes on to talk about what a “warm-up” match is, after claiming that’s all this is for Omega.
Proving his point correct, Omega continues to dominate the action. He gets a near fall after a nice back-breaker as he picks up the intensity now, punishing “100 Proof” Alan Angels as Pineapple Pete and The Gunn Brothers are shown watching from ringside.
Angels manages to get in some rapid-fire punches after turning Omega in the corner. He hits the ropes but runs right into a solid clothesline from the AEW EVP. He rolls under the ropes but stays on the apron. Omega goes after him but while he stands with his back to Omega and Omega approaches, Angels blasts the AAA Mega Champion with a Stunner on the opposite side of the ropes on the apron.
He re-enters the ring and goes on an actual prolonged offensive run, which comes off as believable due to the offense selection and how it was worked into the match story. Angels is showcasing some cool spots for the little bit he is given in this one, however Omega cuts his run short with a Snap-Dragon Suplex. He blasts him with a V-Trigger and confidently grabs his leg for the pin. Angels kicks out at two! Omega smiles and shrugs it off. Now he deadlifts Angels like a grown man picking up a child. He slams him down hard and hits another V-Trigger. Omega wins.
Winner: Kenny Omega

A special look at Scorpio Sky is shown, a documentary style vignette that tells the story of Sky’s journey from childhood pro wrestling fan to pro wrestler to one of the top stars in the new All Elite Wrestling promotion.
Road To & BTE Promotion
A clip from this week’s Road To AEW Dynamite video is shown, with Dustin Rhodes announcing he will retire if he can’t beat Kip Sabian in the TNT Championship Tournament.
Also shown is a video promoting the release of the 200th episode of the Being The Elite digital series that evolved into the ALL IN show, which ultimately resulted in the launch of All Elite Wrestling.
We head back to a commercial after being informed that after the break, Orange Cassidy vs. Jimmy Havoc will be up next in one-on-one action.
Orange Cassidy vs. Jimmy Havoc
We return and Jimmy Havoc makes his way to the ring. Out next is “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy, who walks out to an introduction that includes the ring announcer saying, “From…wherever! Weighing…whatever!”
The bell sounds and here we go. avoc attacks Cassidy right off the bat and beats up Cassidy. Takes his jacket off and tosses it to Penelope Ford in the crowd and she stomps on it. Havoc then takes Cassidy’s shirt off and chokes him with it. Out on the floor, Cassidy gets thrown into the barricade and then crotched down on it. Havoc with a vertical suplex to the outside of the ring.
Havoc and Allin return the action to the ring, where Havoc continues to destroy his opponent. Havoc runs into a couple boots, but hits a european uppercut, death valley driver, uppercut, cover, two. Havoc bites Cassidy’s fingers, then puts them in Cassidy’s pockets. Havoc throws a punch, Cassidy ducks, kip up, suicide dive on the floor. In the ring, Cassidy with a flying crosssbody and a big tornado DDT.
Now, Havoc gets tripped up and hits the top turnbuckle, crashing down to the mat hard. Cassidy off the top rope and hits a lazy splash for a two-count. Havoc with some big shots, Cassidy returns with a wimpy shot of his own.
Out of nowhere, a big superman punch by Cassidy. Penelope Ford climbs up on the apron. Chuck Taylor tells her to get down. She goes to kick him, he catches it and throws it down, she just goes down into a split.
Kip Sabian with a big senton to clear out The Best Friends. Now, Ford leaps off the top rope, however she doesn’t hit anyone. Instead, Cassidy uses the distraction to roll-up Havoc. 1-2-3. “Freshly Squeezed” picks up the win.

Once the match is over, Havoc and Sabian try and gang up on Cassidy for a prolonged post-match beat down, however The Best Friends hit and clear the ring.
MJF Hangnail Issues & AEW Title Vow
Maxwell Jacob Friedman is shown talking about the state of the world as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, or so we think. After a long, dramatic build-up, we find out that he’s actually talking about how sad everyone is because he hasn’t wrestled on AEW TV in a while.
He claims he suffered a hang nail during his last AEW appearance and it has become a life-threatening injury that may end up requiring surgery.
The camera pulls back to show MJF, who is cutting the promo from “his rat’s house” in Cape Cod, is wearing a sling because of said-hang-nail, presumably. He promises to win the AEW World Championship to close out the promo segment.
Wardlow vs. Lee Johnson
The big man Wardlow returns for a rare singles match appearance here on AEW Dynamite. He makes his way to the ring for tonight’s bout now.
Wardlow will be going one-on-one against Lee Johnson. This one doesn’t last long at all, as Wardlow is given the showcase time slot this week that The Murderhawk Monster had last week.
In a quick squash match, Wardlow blasts Johnson with a series of suplexes before picking up the victory after blasting him with his F-10 finisher.

“The Exalted One” Brodie Lee Accepts New Member Of The Dark Order
We see a vignette where someone loses their girlfriend, as audio of an old phone call where the break-up occurs plays. Then we see the guy scrolling around on the internet. He logs on to Join The Dark Order.
He fills out a form online writing that “he had the whole world in his hands.”
From there, we shoot to an empty office where Brodie Lee is sitting with the guy. Lee addresses the guy, saying he’s heard he’s got talent. He asks him how tall he is, how much he weighs and if he has ever played football. The guy responds saying he is 6’2″, weighs 240 pounds, and that he did, in fact, play football.
Brodie Lee goes on to claim that many are afraid of success. He claims he can offer him success because The Dark Order are the lions of AEW. He says they feed on the prey.
He extends his hand and gives the guy something. He says he is home now and he is one of us. “You are Dark Order,” concludes “The Exalted One” as he sits back in his chair to end the segment.
Justin Law vs. Brodie Lee
Now we head back live inside the arena where Chris Jericho and Tony Schiavone talk up “The Exalted One” as Brodie Lee, the man himself, makes his way to the ring to take on Justin Law in what is likely another showcase match, similar to the Wardlow bout.
And that’s exactly what this turned out to be. In another quick squash match, Lee picks up the “W” after hitting a few impressive throws and suplexes on Law before ending the match with his discus lariat finisher.
Winner: Brodie Lee
Orange Cassidy & The Best Friends Backstage
Backstage, the AEW interview girl catches up with The Best Friends — Chuck Taylor and Trent — who are with “Freshly Squeezed” Orange Cassidy.
They talk about Orange Cassidy nearly suffering his first loss and how Trent is quiet, which means someone is going to die, according to Chuck Taylor, who addresses Penelope Ford. With that said, the trio walks off.
The Bubbley Bunch Part 2
Now we head to the return, by popular demand, of The Bubbley Bunch. The web-cam series again shows, one-by-one, each member of The Inner Circle addressing each other in various quick-cut solo shots of each guy saying a couple of lines and / or delivering a couple of jokes from their respective homes during Quarantine Life.
They end up setting up a “Who Can Do The Best Flim-Flam” contest with the winner getting a bottle of hand sanitzer. Now a colorful star graphic on each side of the screen appears while some music plays and each member of The Inner Circle is shown, one-by-one, doing the Flim Flam dance.
Guevara ends up doing the best one, resulting in a sore-loser Jericho complaining. The segment wraps up on that note and we head back to another commercial break.
TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinals
Dustin Rhodes vs. Kip Sabian
We move on to our next match, which will be our main event of the evening, as Dustin Rhodes goes one-on-one against Kip Sabian in our second TNT Championship Tournament Quarterfinal match of the evening.
As noted in the video shown from “The Road To AEW Dynamite” special earlier in the show, if Dustin doesn’t win this match, he will retire from active in-ring competition.
Both guys have made their ring entrances, the formal pre-match instructions have been given and the bell sounds to kick this one off.
Early on, neither guy establishes an offensive advantage. When all is said-and-done, however, it is a Code Red from Rhodes that earns him the victory and helps him advance to the next round of the tournament.
In the TNT Championship Tournament Semifinals, Dustin Rhodes will go one-on-one with “The Murderhawk Monster” Lance Archer.
Dustin Rhodes celebrates in the ring as match highlights, including several camera angles of his impressive flipping Code Red finisher, are shown while the announcers recap the action and plug next week’s show as this week’s AEW Dynamite goes off the air.
