AEW Rampage 12/29/23

From The Addition Financial Arena in Orlando, Florida. Tony Schiavone and Excalibur are on commentary and here comes Chris Jericho.

Jericho reminds us that Sammy got kicked out of the Don Callis Family, which leads us to the eight-man tag at World’s End. Jericho, Sammy, Darby, and Sting teaming together for the first time. Months ago, Sting told Jericho that even though he doesn’t like him, he respects him, and he will have his back. Jericho says he and Sammy have some things to hash out, so here comes Sammy Guevara.

Jericho wants to know why Sammy turned on him and joined the Don Callis Family. Sammy says he started blaming Jericho instead of blaming himself. Sammy says he will become the man that he knows he can be. Sammy apologizes to Jericho, and Jericho accepts. Jericho, in turn, apologizes to Sammy and tells him that he is his biggest fan. Jericho says he still has a title shot, and needs a partner. LE SEX GODS ARE BACK.

Renee is in the back with Matt Menard and Brody King. Menard loses his mind but Garcia takes the mic and says he’s going to fight back against the House of Black… and they’ll have their revenge.

Match #1. Ruby Soho w/ Saraya & Harley Cameron vs. Marina Shafir w/ Nyla Rose

Snap mare by Shafir and some punts to the back, but Harley Cameron trips up Shafir from outside and Ruby takes control. Commercial break. Hard hammer throws in the corner by Ruby but Shafir counters with a pair of hip tosses. STO by Shafir gets two. Saraya gets up on the apron but Nyla Rose is there to goozle her. Shafir’s attention is diverted as Ruby catches her with No Future from behind. Two count. Ruby misses a diving double stomp and Shafir capitalizes with a version of an exploder. Harley Cameron gets on the apron and causes the distraction, allowing Ruby to roll Shafir up from behind.

Winner: Ruby Soho

Rating: 3/4*. Not good. Shafir is also not progressing like maybe AEW had hoped, as she looked off balance on some of her offense and it just felt awkward all around.

Willow Nightingale and Kris Statlander are in the back with Renee. Both women are from Long Island, and they want a spot on the card this weekend. Stokely Hathaway is here, and he thinks they should wrestle each other. Done deal.

Match #2. Ring of Honor Pure Championship: Wheeler Yuta (c) vs. Matt Sydal

Slow start her, as the feeling out process lasts just about to the commercial break. Bow and Arrow by but Sydal flips out. Big body slam by Yuta and a few elbows drops. Two count. Yuta with a Perfect Plex and a bridge that gets two. Commercial break. Back from commercial and Sydal responds with a leg lariat and a running kick combo. Question mark kick by Sydal and an Air Raid Crash gets two. Sydal goes up top but misses and lands on his feet. Big boot by Yuta. High kick by Sydal. Rebound under the bottom rope by Yuta, right ingo a bridging German suplex for two. Arm-trapped Olympic Slam by Yuta gets two. Cobra Clutch like crossface by Yuta but Sydal gets to the ropes. That’s the first. Victory Roll by Sydal and that’s a very close two count. Double jump arm drag by Yuta but he holds on, rolls through a seatbelt, and delivers some Hammer and Anvil elbows. Yuta maintains his grip, and NOW rolls for the Seatbelt and gets the win!

Winner and STILL ROH Pure Champion: Wheeler Yua

Rating: **1/4. This was fine, but there wasn’t a single person who expected Sydal to win this one… which makes me wonder why it’s on the go-home show for World’s End.

After the match, Danhausen is here! Danhausen acknowledges Yuta is wrestling his close friend named Hook, and disqualifies Yuta before the match starts. Yuta decks Danhausen and DDTs him. Yuta grabs the mic… “kiss my ass” and here’s Hook!

A video package of MJF and Samoa Joe is shown.

Match #3. Top Flight & Action Andretti vs. CHAOS

Andretti flips out of an arm drag from Cassidy. Hands in pocket and a shotgun dropkick. Double back elbow by Cassidy and Trent to Andretti. Forearm by Trent floors Andretti and Darius gets the tag. Both men trade shoulder block and chops in the corner. Jumping Meteora by Trent but an arm drag by Darius and tag to Dante. Clothesline in the corner by Top Flight, suplex, and a stalling sention. Assisted tornado DDT by Top Flight and a handspring kick to Cassidy on the apron by Andretti. Triple suicide dive by Top Flight & Andretti as we go to break. Trent gets thrown in the ring but Andretti misses a springboard 450 and Trent responds with a Sexy Chuckie Knee. Trent sets Martin up on the top rope and Rocky drops the knee, as Trent connects with a sliding knee all to Dante. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. Rocky is legal knee now with a big knee drop and a focused attack on the knee of Dante. Cassidy in now with some of his boots in the corner and a shotgun dropkick. Quick tags between CHAOS as we’re headed to PIP. Rocky runs into an enziguiri in the corner and comes back in with a springboard dropkick. Trent gets the tag but so does Dante. Flying elbows by Dante and a cartwheels over the ropes into an enziguiri. Another crossbody. Two count. Superkick and a bottom rope assisted flatliner to Cassidy by Top Flight. Two count. Stundog Millionaire by Cassidy to Dante but a shotgun dropkick by Andretti into a German. Hammerlock Skull Crushing Finale by Dante to Trent. Brainbuster and springboard 450 by Top Flight. Two count. Superkick by Dante to Cassidy. Rebound kick by Rocky to Dante. Springboard Pele by Darius to Rocky. Saito suplex by Trent. High knee by Andretti and an Arabian Press to the floor. Suicide dive by Rocky. Andretti catches Rocky with an enziguiri on the top and meets him up there. Release overhead German suplex off the top by Trent to Andretti. Dante is in the ring and they look for Strong Zero but Andretti superkicks Trent into a Code Red. Orange Punch by Cassidy but Date rolls him up for two. Superkick by Cassidy. Orange Punch to Dante but a mid-air dropkick counters. Rocky comes off the top but Dante catches him with a spinning sitout Full Nelson Slam for the win.

Winners: Top Flight & Action Andretti

Rating: ***1/4. Exactly what you would expect from all of the guys involved in this match. Top Flight & Action Andretti seem like the strongest and most consistent trio in AEW, and that’s probably where the titles should end up at some point.

Final Thoughts: I know Rampage is the B-show, but I expected more from the go-home show to World’s End, especially with it being branded a New Year’s Smash edition. The main event was fun, as the trios usually are, but the rest of the show just seemed to exist. 6/10.
