Matt Cardona (fka Zack Ryder) recently spoke with Fightful Select and revealed that his WWE non-compete clause actually expired one month before his original contract expired.
Cardona noted that his original WWE contract was actually going to expire in August 2020. He had passed on signing a new deal in 2019, but the nature of his contract meant that WWE releasing him in April 2020 put his non-compete clause through mid-July of last year. This means WWE effectively only missed out on paying Cardona around one month of his originally agreed contract by letting him go.
It was also pointed out how several of the WWE talents released in April 2020 due to COVID-19 budget cuts were people who had indicated that they wanted to be released, or had yet to sign new contracts with WWE.
After a brief run with AEW last year, Cardona is currently working for Impact Wrestling. It was recently revealed that he has not signed a contract yet. Cardona is scheduled to team with Eddie Edwards to face Brian Myers and Hernandez at Saturday’s Impact No Surrender event.
