As I was having a conversation with a friend of mine about Gunther’s recent Intercontinental Title victory, the topic turned to new champions, in general. We started talking about some of the more recent title switches in wrestling, and he made a column request. He asked me to revisit a topic I wrote about a little over a year ago, looking at who I would like to see as the next title holder for the various titles in WWE and AEW. We debated on whether or not the column should be about who I think WILL be the next champions, or who I think SHOULD be the next champions.
The former is difficult, especially in the case of WWE, where Vince McMahon might be certifiably insane and is on a downward spiral that might very well lead to his dismissal of power. He might end up having R-Truth beat Roman Reigns on Main Event one of these weeks before booking his own death in yet another limo explosion. The latter option is a lot more fun, so that’s what we settled on.
The premise is pretty self-explanatory. I’m going to look at the different championships in WWE and AEW and present a case for who I think should be the next person/people to hold said titles. I’ll try my best to make it as realistic as I possibly can, so none of the aforementioned R-Truth beating Roman Reigns simply because I like R-Truth. It’s an easy topic that opens the floor to a lot of potential discussion.
Just because I’m fresh off of watching Forbidden Door, I’m going to start with AEW, then move on to WWE.
AEW World Title (Currently held by CM Punk/Jon Moxley): Obviously, this one is going to depend on who wins the eventual unification match between Punk and Moxley. If you want to be super technical about it, my pick would be CM Punk, because I feel he should be the one to win the unification bout with Moxley. I love what Moxley has been doing, but Punk wasn’t given an actual opportunity to BE the World Champion. I don’t want to take the easy way out for this answer, though, so I’ll be answering it as if Punk has already defeated Moxley. Give the title to Sting. No, I’m kidding. Well, partially kidding. Would it shock you to see Sting get a World Title run? It wouldn’t shock me. He’s out there jumping off of shit and trying to wrestle as if he was 30 years old again, and he continues to be one of the most over men in all of AEW. I’m not giving Sting the belt, though. Sorry to all of the people who have been complaining about “AEW originals” having to take a backseat to people signed from WWE, but I think Punk should drop the title to another WWE signing. Not because “HAHA WWE GUYZ R BETTER” or anything, but because it just makes sense because of Punk’s history with a couple people. There’s Samoa Joe, but it’s difficult to gauge his AEW future. He’s the current Ring Of Honor Television Champion, and with RoH on the verge of relaunching, are we even going to see Joe wrestling for AEW much anymore? Shit, we’re already at a full month since Joe last wrestled. The other pick is the one I’m going with, and that’s Bryan Danielson. Of course, there’s the major asterisk here, too, as Danielson is currently on the shelf with what is rumored to be a concussion. That’s a serious injury for anybody, but for Bryan Danielson, it’s something that could be a career-ender with everything he’s gone through in the past. If he’s able to return to the ring, I think this is a very good spot for him.
TNT Title (Currently held by Scorpio Sky): Right now, I think this is an easy one. The person that I think should be the next TNT Champion looks to be the person that probably will be the next TNT Champion, and that is Wardlow. No, I’m not a huge fan of the story that is currently being told with Wardlow going after the title, and all the extra shit that is going with it, but he has definitely earned the spot he’s in. The “Batista leaving Evolution” story was done really well with him finally splitting from MJF, and I think he can do a lot with this title if given the chance.
All-Atlantic Title (Currently held by Pac): This is a tough one to make decisions for because none of us really have any idea of what to expect for a brand new title. In a couple months, it could be viewed as the second biggest singles title in AEW. At the same time, it could be viewed as a comedy title by that point. Because of that, I can’t sit here and put all this in-depth thought into a title change. Let’s just say Miro and call it a day. He’s who was the clear favorite to win the title at Forbidden Door, anyway, and he certainly deserves a reward for the tremendous work he’s been putting in since finally getting rid of Kip Sabian.
AEW Women’s Title (Currently held by Thunder Rosa): I was a huge fan of Thunder Rosa chasing Britt Baker and the AEW Women’s Title. Since winning the title in March, I… well, let’s just say I haven’t been as big of a fan. Is that her fault, or is that AEW’s fault? Right now, that doesn’t matter much. In my opinion, her title reign just isn’t “clicking” the way it could/should. Where do you go from here, though? Serena Deeb would’ve been a really good choice here, but she just lost to Rosa in a title match at Double Or Nothing last month. Toni Storm would’ve been a really good choice, but she just lost to Rosa at Forbidden Door. As long as Britt Baker is in AEW, she will probably always be in or around the title pictures, so she has to be viewed as a contender. Mercedes Martinez? Athena? Ruby Soho? Riho? If a title change was going to happen a bit more down the road, I think someone like Jamie Hayter could be a good option. I think she needs more time to be built to this level, so I wouldn’t put the belt on her soon. The same could be said about Paige VanZant if she continues working at her craft, as it would drum up some headlines if she became the champion. Right now, I think I would go with Hikaru Shida. AEW crowds love her, she hasn’t been the champion in over a year now, and she’s a relatively safe and reliable option for the company.
TBS Title (Currently held by Jade Cargill): When you have an undefeated champion, you’re in a unique situation where you can create a megastar by doing so, but then also create another megastar by having someone come along and finally defeat them. I’m not saying it always works out that way, nor should it always work out that way, but it’s an option. I think that’s what we have in AEW with the TBS Title. Whether you like Jade Cargill or not, you can’t deny that she is being presented as a huge deal. She LOOKS like a megastar, and her presentation is that of a megastar. She’s not quite putting out five-star classics in the ring, but she’s also someone that is brand new to the business and is constantly improving with time and longer matches with a variety of opponents. As long as she continues to be elevated, the woman who comes along and eventually ends her undefeated streak will be elevated, as well. Honestly, right now, that woman needs to be Kris Statlander. A “safe” pick, I guess, but she brings a lot of things to the table that you’re looking for in this situation. She isn’t going to be intimidated by Jade’s size and strength, because she’s almost as big and is probably the strongest woman on the entire roster. On top of that, she has grown to become REALLY over with live crowds. You’re looking at a situation where the roof will come off of an arena if she’s able to pin the champion and become the first woman to defeat her.
AEW Tag Team Titles (Currently held by The Young Bucks): The easy answer here would be to say FTR so that Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler can continue their “belt collectors” direction and hold their fourth set of titles. It wouldn’t surprise me if that’s the direction things go in at some point, but I’m going to continue calling for something I’ve been trying to see for a while now. I’ve mentioned it on several occasions in my column, but I think the titles should go to Santana & Ortiz. They have been the most criminally underutilized team in AEW from day one. We’ve seen them in some high-profile feuds and stories, but they still haven’t been able to fully show what they’re capable of. It’s time for that to change.
WWE Title (Currently held by Roman Reigns): Well… here we go with the bullshit. WWE has booked themselves into plenty of corners through the years, but the last couple of years with Roman Reigns might be the furthest in the corner they’ve ever been. There is absolutely, positively no reason he should be holding both the WWE Title and the Universal Title, especially when he’s not even going to appear every week, let alone wrestle. There are ways to get one of the two titles off of Reigns, but the biggest issue is that a lot of those ways involve him losing a match. For example, he could put the WWE Title on the line against, say, Riddle, and then lose the match. Now the WWE Title is back on Raw full-time, and Roman continues being the Universal Champion, but the entire point of the last two years has been that he doesn’t lose to anybody. WWE is going to have to get creative here. Yes, I know. Since we don’t have brand-specific General Managers right now, the easiest option would be to have someone from WWE Management come out and say Roman will no longer be able to hold Monday Night Raw hostage. You know the deal… you’re not on Raw, Raw needs a champion that is around, blah blah blah. Force Roman to either “compete regularly” on Raw or strip him of the WWE Title. Since the Universal Title is his record-breaking reign, he’s more dedicated to that one, so FINE, here’s the WWE Title because I don’t need it any more, yadda yadda yadda. Then it doesn’t matter what Raw does… books a match, makes a tournament, and so forth… but they get to crown a new champion. This option presents a different problem. Raw’s roster is currently at a point where just about all of their top stars are either injured or have lost to Roman Reigns at least once in the last two years, showing that they’re “lesser” talents than he is. Seth Rollins, Edge, Finn Balor and Kevin Owens are a combined 1-8 against Roman during his Universal Title reign, and that one victory was by disqualification. Bobby Lashley lost to Roman last September. Riddle just lost to him a couple weeks ago. Rey Mysterio lost to him last June. Randy Orton is the biggest and brightest hope, but he’s currently injured and initial rumors say that he could be out for at least the rest of 2022 if he needs back surgery. Normally, it doesn’t matter a ton if Raw’s World Champion looks stronger than Smackdown’s World Champion, or vice versa, but this is a special scenario. With Smackdown’s World Champion looking SO strong that he has been able to run roughshod over both rosters, that makes Raw’s World Champion (unless it’s Randy Orton or an out-of-nowhere choice) look bad. If Orton is going to be unavailable for that long (same for Cody Rhodes), I think the WWE Title should go to Seth Rollins in the scenario I laid out here. He’s still one of the top names in all of WWE, and is always going to be one of the most dependable people around when it comes to having great matches and promos in whatever feud he’s in. Riddle would be a good option, but I think any eventual title reign for him should happen when Orton has returned, or is close to returning. There’s more storyline intrigue there in a potential heel turn for either Orton or Riddle.
United States Title (Currently held by Theory): Quick question. Let’s say Theory successfully defends the United States Title against Bobby Lashley, even if he does so through nefarious means. How much “damage” does that do to Lashley in the eyes of the WWE Universe? That would take him from beating Brock Lesnar for the WWE Title to being beaten by Theory in the span of five months. Initially, it was strange to see Lashley “demoted” to the midcard after working in the main event scene for a while, but I’m starting to come around to the idea. Lashley can bring a level of prestige to a title that is sorely in need of it right now. It also frees Theory up to have his SummerSlam match against John Cena. That match doesn’t need the United States Title involved in it. Yeah, let’s go with Bobby Lashley here.
Raw Women’s Title (Currently held by Bianca Belair): With Bayley currently listed as a free agent, she is able to show up on either brand. I’ve seen a lot of people say that Bayley should be the one to dethrone Bianca, and while that wouldn’t be the worst idea ever, I’m not going with that line of thinking. First of all, we’ve seen Bianca and Bayley feud relatively recently. Bianca went 3-0 in singles matches against Bayley in 2021, including two pay-per-view matches, one of which was a Hell In A Cell match. Most importantly, though, I think Rhea Ripley is where the money is at. Bianca and Rhea have been positioned as the Trish Stratus and Lita of this generation. Their names will always be connected after coming up through NXT together and then being the final two competitors in the 2021 women’s Royal Rumble match. Strangely enough, though, they’ve only had one singles match against each other on the main roster, and that came at the end of a Gauntlet Match a few months ago. We were going to get a match between them at Money In The Bank, but an injury to Ripley put an end to that. With Rhea’s heel turn and new alliance with Damian Priest and Finn Balor, she has a brighter spotlight on her than before. This one just makes too much sense not to happen.
24/7 Title (Currently held by Dana Brooke): When I tell you I could not possibly care any less about this title, who currently holds it, and who might hold it in the future, I might be underselling it a bit. It doesn’t matter who beats Dana Brooke for the title, nor does it matter who beats that person, who then beats that person, and so on. Hard pass.
Raw Tag Team Titles (Currently held by The Usos): I don’t even know what to do here. If you go to the Superstars section of WWE.com, it officially lists The Usos as both the Raw and the Smackdown Tag Team Champions. Then, if you go to the Money In The Bank section of WWE.com, it lists The Usos as the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Champions. In wrestling, when someone is an “undisputed” champion, it generally means that there’s no need for another title. If you’re going to combine the titles, create new Undisputed Tag Team belts, and just have the champions appear on both shows… fine. This is yet another instance of WWE flicking themselves in the testicles for no reason. Unlike Roman Reigns, you can have Jimmy and Jey drop one of their tag titles without ruining any sort of storylines that have been built, as they’ve already lost non-title matches, singles matches, and so forth during their reigns. It is very important that Raw and Smackdown continue going down their own separate paths. Different wrestlers, different champions, different stories being told. I don’t think that’s going to happen, mind you, but it needs to. If you’re going to find a way to split the Tag Team Titles into two different sets again, put the Raw ones on The Street Profits and let’s move on.
Universal Title (Currently held by Roman Reigns): Here is the gazillion-dollar issue for WWE. When this column goes live to the world, it will be the 668th day of Roman’s Universal Title reign. It is already the longest World Title reign that we’ve seen in this company since Hulk Hogan’s legendary first WWF Title reign that lasted 1,474 days from January 23rd, 1984 to February 5th, 1988. His next announced defense is at SummerSlam, which will mark his 699th day as champion. Would WWE really end his reign a day short of 700 days to a man he has defeated three consecutive times (two during this current reign)? I mean, this is WWE we’re talking about, so of course that’s an option, but what’s the point? As big as SummerSlam is, and should be, this isn’t a reign you bring to an end at the event. This is a reign that can only come to an end at WrestleMania. I’ve been very out in the open about that. I’ve done the math in my columns before, but that would mean Roman heads into WrestleMania 39 with a 944 or 945-day (depending on which night he wrestles) Universal Title reign. Still short of Hogan’s mark by a ton, and wayyyyy short of Bruno Sammartino’s record WWWF Title reign of 2,803 days from May 17th, 1963 to January 18th, 1971. Still… did you ever think you’d live to see a modern day WWE title reign approach the 1,000-day mark? I sure didn’t. If you’re going to put an end to that type of title reign, there are only two names that can do it at this point. One of the names that immediately comes to people’s minds is The Rock. That storyline has been writing itself from the beginning, and the fact that WrestleMania 39 takes place 11 miles from Hollywood, where Dwayne Johnson continues his streak of being one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, only adds to it. However, after everything we’ve been dealing with over the last couple years, do we really need the next Universal Champion to be someone that obviously isn’t going to be around to wrestle on a regular basis? No. We sure as fuck don’t. That leaves one name. The obvious choice. Cody Rhodes. The catch here, of course, is that Cody is on the Raw roster. A Royal Rumble victory would be the easiest option to getting the Roman vs Cody showdown at WrestleMania, but as of right now, a return in time for the Rumble would put him a couple months ahead of schedule in his recovery from surgery. Could it happen? Obviously, yes, it could happen. Could the recovery timetable be kayfabed so that he can do the successful “surprise” return at the Rumble? Absolutely, it could. For now, it’s all a “wait and see” thing, so that’s what we’ll do.
Intercontinental Title (Currently held by Gunther): It is a really big deal when someone defeats Gunther in a singles match. If you’re talking about losing by pin or submission, he has lost a grand total of twice in the last three years. Both Ilja Dragunov and Bron Breakker gained a ton by being able to defeat him. Dear Lord, I hope that type of thing continues here and that he doesn’t just drop the Intercontinental Title to Humberto on a random episode of Smackdown. There are a couple of intriguing options here. Someone like Xavier Woods would do great in this role. Woods didn’t back down from Roman Reigns and Bobby Lashley, so it seems believable that he wouldn’t back down from Gunther, either. How about Ricochet? The man who lost the title to Gunther could certainly gain a lot by winning it back, especially if it happens down the road and Ricochet can learn from the “mistakes” he made in losing to begin with. If WWE is going to give extra prestige to the United States Title by giving it to Bobby Lashley, couldn’t they do the same thing for the Intercontinental Title by giving it to Drew McIntyre? Technically, you could say the same thing about Sheamus. Sheamus and McIntyre have never faced Gunther in singles competition (Sheamus hasn’t faced him in any type of match), so that’s added intrigue. What about John Cena? It would give Cena perhaps his last “monster” to conquer, and it would give him the a title that he has yet to win in his WWE career. With all of those options, I’m going to go with something different. Something that will be a surprise to anyone that has been reading my columns for the last few months. Madcap Moss. If you play your cards right, Moss can become a major star by defeating Gunther. It’s pretty clear that WWE sees something in Moss, and the WWE Universe has started to get behind him, as well.
Smackdown Women’s Title (Currently held by Ronda Rousey): I’m sure it will end up being Charlotte because WWE can’t help themselves. With that said, can we build someone up? How about Shayna Baszler? The history between Rousey and Baszler has been well-documented. Now, WWE has made it known that Shayna is torn between loyalty to her best friend, Ronda, and loyalty to her tag partner, Natalya, as those two are involved in a very personal feud. You know what could be fun? A double turn for Ronda and Shayna. It wouldn’t be difficult to pull off, but it could be difficult to maintain. If Ronda is able to successfully defend against Natalya, it’s pretty easy to see her doing a post-match beatdown, or refusing to let go of a submission after the bell. That personal path of the feud makes that pretty plausible. Ronda is a hothead to begin with, so why wouldn’t she be extra angry here? If Ronda continues the assault on Natalya, Shayna can be the one to come to Natalya’s rescue. Because of Ronda’s MMA background, there aren’t a lot of women in WWE who can believably stand up to her and not look silly. Shayna Baszler, with her own MMA background, is one of the women who can do that. Ronda continues attacking Natalya, drawing boos from the crowd, and then Shayna runs out and physically removes Ronda from the equation, drawing a face pop. Fuck it. Why not?
Smackdown Tag Team Titles (Currently held by The Usos): As I mentioned earlier, I’m just going to run with the idea that WWE will come to their senses and make sure both Raw and Smackdown get their own set of Tag Team Champions. If that does happen, you already know Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods will win the Smackdown belts because they’re going to pass titles back and forth with The Usos until the end of time. Personally, I’d like to see the titles go to Sheamus & Butch. You’re going to get a really good match with them and The Usos, and you’re going to get good quality matches from the new champions moving forward. Where’s the problem?
WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles (Currently vacant): I listed this here simply because the previous champions were members of the Smackdown roster. Is it too late to just go back to WWE having one set of Women’s Tag Team Titles instead of having one for the main roster and another one for NXT? This shit has been a mess from the start, and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. WWE stripped Sasha Banks and Naomi of these titles SIX WEEKS AGO, and the belts have just gone away. If WWE doesn’t care, I don’t know why I should care. I really don’t. If WWE insists on keeping these titles, just put them on Doudrop & Nikki Cross. Yes, Nikki Cross, and not Nikki A.S.H. because she needs that switch badly. The A.S.H. gimmick ran its course a while ago. A more serious heel Nikki Cross teaming with a more serious heel Doudrop? Works for me.
NXT Title (Currently held by Bron Breakker): If you’ve been watching NXT recently, and if you know me, then you might have a good idea of where I’m going with this one. While NXT has taken a youth-driven turn and has largely been focused on rookies and up-and-coming talents, they have also proven that they can do well pushing main roster talent in the right spots. Dolph Ziggler did very well for himself recently, putting on very good work and becoming the NXT Champion earlier this year. He looked like a new man, looking as hungry and as motivated as he had been in years. Why couldn’t we see the same thing with Apollo Crews? Apollo is as blue-chip as they get, and he has the same opportunity that Dolph had a few months ago. A new environment (you get my point), a new set of opponents, and a new desire to show the world what he’s capable of. He has already been well-received by the NXT crowd, and he can have a lot of fun in a match or series of matches with the current NXT Champion. So, again… why couldn’t we see this?
NXT North American Title (Currently held by Carmelo Hayes): This one is simple for me. Wes Lee. We’ve already seen the seeds planted with Lee currently in a feud with Trick Williams. If Melo can successfully defend the title against Grayson Waller next week, I think moving on to something with Wes Lee is a logical choice. That’s a feud that could deliver an instant classic or two, without a doubt. I’ve been really impressed with Wes Lee’s promo work since Nash Carter was released, and his in-ring work has always been impressive. That Nash Carter release is what makes me think he’s going to get a push. It’s not his fault that his successful tag team was destroyed in a matter of days, so think of a singles push as something of a “reward” for having to deal with his partner’s punishment.
NXT Women’s Title (Currently held by Mandy Rose): I’m a little torn on this one. Right now, I’m going to say Roxanne Perez is the pick. However, I’m also of the thinking that there’s no need to rush with her right now. She’s 20 years old and has only been in NXT for two months. I’m well aware of her reign as the Ring Of Honor Women’s Champion, but in the grand scheme of things, that doesn’t matter much. She’s able to tell a really good underdog story, though, and I think that can really work as she makes her way to the top of the division. Of course, you have to mention her victory in the Women’s Breakout Tournament a few weeks back. That earns her a title shot of her choosing at any time. As of the moment I type these words, this week’s episode of NXT hasn’t aired yet. On the card for this week’s show is the former Rok-C teaming with Cora Jade to take on Katana Chance and Kayden Carter, with the winning team facing Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne for the NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles next week. If Perez and Jade win the title contender’s match, that could change the trajectory here, for sure, but I’m sticking with my pick.
NXT Tag Team Titles (Currently held by The Creed Brothers): I’m not sure if you’re aware of this or not, but the current men’s tag division in NXT isn’t exactly looking like modern day AEW or Attitude Era WWF. Brutus and Julius Creed are the best tag team in NXT right now, and they’re a country mile ahead of anyone else. Pretty crazy to say that about a team that made their in-ring debut less than a year ago. Right now, I think I would go with the Creeds being unseated by Joaquin Wilde & Cruz Del Toro. Those two have done so much good work in NXT, but they don’t have any titles to show for it. From there, you can have the Creeds split from Roderick Strong and Damon Kemp and feud with them, as there’s no reason to keep the cursed Diamond Mine stable around any longer. We all know the breakup is coming, so we might as well get that show on the road. I think that’s a more entertaining option than just having Strong and Kemp beat the Creeds for the titles next week.
NXT Women’s Tag Team Titles (Currently held by Gigi Dolin & Jacy Jayne): As I mentioned earlier, this week’s episode of NXT has yet to air as I’m typing this, but I think Katana Chance & Kayden Carter need to be the pick, no matter the result of the contender’s bout. There isn’t a team in NXT that can do what those two are capable of doing in the ring, and nobody comes close to the in-ring chemistry of K-Ci & JoJo, either. I’m not saying they’re on the level of Wes Lee and Nash Carter, but I think KC & KC & The Sunshine Band can provide the same jolt of electricity and entertainment to the women’s tag division that MSK was able to bring to the men’s tag division in NXT.
