Exclusive: Interview with Justin Call of Downstait (Miz, Ziggler, Cody Rhodes, All In theme songs)

I had an opportunity to reach out to Justin Call, guitarist and backup vocals for the band Downstait. Downstait is most known in the wrestling world as the sound behind several wrestlers’ theme songs including The Miz, Dolph Ziggler, and most recently Cody Rhodes and Britt Baker. The discussion was short and sweet but I look forward to reaching out to them again as they continue to take over the wrestling scene.

Breaking the ice, I asked him what made him a fan of wrestling.

The first time I ever watched, Undertaker was putting someone into a body bag. I can’t recall who it was, but the theatrical side of it is definitely what drew me in.

What is your favorite memory of wrestling?

Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho at WrestleMania XIX

It’s not often that a theme song matches a wrestler so well that it stands the test of time. The Miz has had the same theme song for nearly a decade but it has become so synonymous with his career that it’s hard to remember a time when he came out to anything else. When creating a theme song for a wrestler, what is your inspiration?

I like to get a sense of the character, but I also like to get a strong sense of what the person behind the character is looking for. I usually ask, “If you could walk to the ring to any song, would it be?” That gives me a good idea of what kind of elements to include while still creating something original.

It’s no secret that Cody Rhodes is a big fan of Downstait. You recently played at the All In after party as a special guest attraction. How did that come to be? Will you be working with AEW in the future?

Cody and Conrad asked, that’s it. We’d love to continue to make themes for anyone that needs our services, no matter where they work. It would be a great full-time gig.

Downstait has the magical touch with theme songs. My favorite is still Alex Riley’s “Say it to My Face” theme. Can we look forward to any more theme music for other wrestlers?

As long as we’re in demand, we’ll continue to create themes. It’s on us to deliver to keep that demand alive.

Do you have anyone in mind you’d like to perform for that isn’t being planned for right now?

Jeff Cobb, love watching that dude. Baron Corbin, because he’s a fellow Sevendust fan.

Aside from wrestling, can we look forward to anything from Downstait? Is a new CD in the cards?

Absolutely, still figuring out how to proceed with the next album, financial, where to record, etc., but we’ve got more than enough material for another full album and we’re very much looking forward to everyone hearing what we’ve been up to.
