Commentary by Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness and WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix

We begin with a glimpse of the nXt Breakout Tournament brackets, which segues into the night’s first match.

Opening Segment: Joaquin Wilde vs. Angel Garza (nXt Breakout Round 1)

Garza’s wearing Mexican flag-inspired pants. Wilde is wearing black with grey and red-orange detail.
Quick start to this match. Both wrestlers wrestling a quick pace. Garza’s firmly in control, even after Wilde connects with a spinning head scissors takedown. Garza rips off his pants to reveal red trunks.

He begins chopping Wilde along the ropes. He transitions it to a neck submission, immobilizing Wilde on the mat.
Wilde’s on his knees. Garza continues to lock up Wilde but jams his knee against his back. Straitjacket hold by Wilde doesn’t do much. Both men collide in mid-air off the ropes.

From the apron, Wilde dives through the corner space of the ropes. Impressively, he connects with Garza.

Both men on the top turnbuckle. Garza with an Avalanche Spanish Fly. 1-2- whoa! Wilde kicks out, then locks up Garza for a 2 count. Crowd’s floored right now. Double underhook butterfly stunner and Garza wins.

Winner: Joaquin Garza via pinfall in 7 minutes

1 cool point for Garza because he pretty much dominated the match, expressed vivid character and proved himself to be the man to beat.

A promo for Kushida is shown, recapping the signing and first few matches.

This is followed by a brief interview with Damien Priest, following his debut TV match last week.

Second Segment: Street Profits (c) vs. Forgotten Sons

Dawkins and Ford get on the mic before the match. Ford asks if Dawkins hears the chatter. Ford says Forgotten Sons think they can stop time. Dawkins says Forgotten Sons won’t be forgotten. They’ll be remembered for being the first team to lose to the Tag Team Champion Street Profits.

Slick double team Samoan drop on Ford. No pinfall yet.
Spinebuster by Dawkins; frog splash by Ford! 1-2-…Ryker pulls Ford out and the referee calls for the bell.

Winners: Street Profits via DQ in 5 minutes

Post-match, Ryker clubs Dawkins. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch rush down to the ring and help push Blake and Cutler out of the ring.
A posedown occurs between the teams; Burch and Lorcan hold the nXt Tag Team titles in their hands. Burch reminds Dawkins that they owe them a title shot.

0 cool points for this match. Not a reflection of the effort and skill level of the teams, but it just didn’t get time to follow through. Realistically, the same 4 teams from TakeOver XXV may continue to feud over the summer. Give them time to shine, I say.

Earlier today, Vanessa Borne & Aliyah mock Mia Yim for not being pretty and privileged as them. Sounds like Aliyah will be wrestling Yim next week.

Third Segment: Nykos Rikos vs. Keith Lee

My wife happens to be watching with me and she says Rikos’ ring attire is the worst she’s ever seen.

“Oh, bask in his glory” chant to start this match. Lee conducts the crowd as Rikos tries to push Lee’s arms down. He can’t do it. So, he slaps Lee in the chest. Lee slaps back with two hands and then pushes
Rikos right into the ropes. Rikos got air there.
Fireman’s carry into a powerslam for the win.

Winner: Keith Lee via pinfall in 2 minutes

One cool point for Lee. Great to see him in the ring again. I don’t normally give cool points for squash matches, but it was actually refreshing to see Lee in singles action again.

nXt Champion Adam Cole is on a global tour, defending the nXt Championship. He’s even got a private jet for his travels. A highlight package of this is shown. It includes a visit from Cole to Gargano’s restaurant before it closes.

nXt Women’s Championship Steel Cage Match: Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Io Shirai

Highlights include:

A nasty leg crank on Shirai by Baszler. Baszler started to walk towards the cage door after it, but Shirai caught her by the leg. She got the upper hand for a bit and then tried to escape by climbing. Baszler easily intercepted her and chucked Shirai into the wall of the cage.

Shirai lies on the mat, barely moving, after that. Baszler continues to dictate the pace of the match by choosing a neck crank submission.
Shirai turns it around and begins bringing the pain to Baszler. She throws herself at Baszler with dropkicks, slamming Baszler into the cage wall. Fans are behind her. Double knees as Baszler hangs on the middle rope.

Beauty bridging German suplex for a 2 count. Shirai’s got momentum.

Double knees into Baszler’s chest as she was sat up in the corner. Shirai’s ascending the cage! Baszler rushes up the turnbuckle to prevent the escape.
Kirifuda Clutch! Baszler tosses Shirai to the mat below. Shirai’s up again with a German suplex from the second turnbuckle! Both women are out.

Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir run down the ramp and distract the referee on the outside. Shirai tries to seize that opportunity to leave through the door. Instead, she kicks the door and it slams into the 3 on the outside. Meanwhile, Baszler attempts a Coquina Clutch. Shirai rolls through for a double stomp on Baszler’s abdomen.

Shafir locks the door, so Shirai climbs the cage wall. It’s slow-going though, and Shafir scales the exterior to hurt Shirai.

Candice LeRae runs down and knocks out Duke. She scales the cage, kicks at Shafir until she falls, and straddles the top.

Duke wakes up Baszler and throws her towards the door. LeRae flies from the top and takes out Duke. Baszler with a high knee to LeRae’s face. She stands up and…Shirai flies from the top of the cage. Moonsault! She didn’t go for the victory! She should’ve jumped down to the outside!
Both women are barely moving after that decision.

Eventually, Shirai crawls towards the open cage door. Baszler traps her in a submission attempt. Shirai breaks it and gets a hand on the mat. Baszler latches on with a Kirifuda Clutch. Shirai’s barely conscious, but she grabs the cage door and slams it on Baszler 3 times. This leads to the champion flopping over Shirai to fall on the floor! Unfortunate!

Winner, and still nXt Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler via escaping the cage in 12 minutes

Post-match, LeRae helps Shirai up to her feet, and Shirai takes her frustrations out on her. She clocks her a few times before stopping and shaking her hand. She gets a chair from under the ring and begins whacking LeRae across the back with it. Yikes. That escalated quickly.

As Shirai walks up the ramp, you can hear her say she doesn’t need friends. She continues to yell at the crowd in her native tongue.

Three cool points for Shirai: two for the match and one for the shocking turn post-match. Shirai really didn’t need to do that moonsault from the top of the cage. It was well-executed but ridiculous because she could have won the match from there. It’s her own fault and then she brought LeRae into this by beating her senseless. Huge heat from the crowd and that’s a game-changer for the Women’s Division.

Two cool points for Baszler who gets the fortunate circumstance of falling through the door to win. Her Horsewomen friends took a beating to help her get there, but she continues to dominate with her submission-based offense.
All that said, this should be the end of that feud. Baszler/LeRae could be next, but we’re gonna see LeRae have to overcome Shirai first. Sensible plotline for the summer months.
