Commentary by Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness and WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix
nXt opens in General Manager William Regal’s office. Regal addresses the chaotic finish to last week’s episode, which saw Viking Raiders relinquish the nXt Tag Team Championships. His solution, in 2 weeks at nXt TakeOver, will be a Fatal Four-Way Ladder match between Street Profits, Forgotten Sons, Lorcan & Burch, and the Undisputed Era.
Opening Segment: Undisputed Era Stirring It Up
Seems like all’s well with the Undisputed Era as they stroll down to the ring en masse. Boom. Adam Cole grabs the mic.
Cole says they’ve heard the rumours circling around the locker room, but the Undisputed Era isn’t going anywhere. They’re all on the same page. They will not stop until they run this place. Very, very soon, the Undisputed Era will be draped in championship gold.
O’Reilly and Fish will regain the nXt Tag Team Championships. Cole will take the nXt Championship from Johnny Gargano.
Cue Gargano’s music and the nXt champion.
Gargano agrees to the title match but he wants Cole to tell the truth. He knows he can never beat Gargano on his own. That’s why he’s back on good terms with his crew.
Cole asks if Gargano forgot who won the first fall in New York..
Gargano replies, asking if Cole knows how math works. He explains it very slowly. In a 2 out of 3 falls match, you need to win…2…falls. Cole won…1 fall. Gargano won…2…falls. Do you understand?
Cole tells Gargano to shut up! He knows it bothers Gargano that he was pinned, and in two weeks, Cole’s gonna do it again.
Suddenly, Matt Riddle hits the ring to exact revenge on Roderick Strong. Gargano runs down the ramp to help out. They clear house as nXt officials come down to the ring to divide up the wrestlers and restore order.
Second Segment: Sean Maluta vs. Mansoor
Monsoor escapes the arm twisting of Maluta to hit him with a headscissors takedown, then a dropkick. Maluta responds with a kick of his own and a Samoan drop.
Running big boot into the corner by Maluta. Off the top ropes, Codebreaker! 1-2- kickout. Monsoor’s in tough with a neck crank submission by Maluta. Fans half-heartedly clap for Monsoor to break the hold, but he’s still struggling.
Monsoor with a kick to the head and a quick German suplex. Monsoor flies over the top rope, from the apron, with a slingshot neckbreaker! He’s hyped up. He lifts Maluta up for a 180 spinning suplex. Pin and win.
Winner: Monsoor via pinfall in 3 minutes
1 cool point for Monsoor. He got enough offense in to have some appreciation from the crowd, who is seeing him succeed for the first time on nXt TV. He’s got some pep in his step and some size and speed, so just curious if he can work the mic now.
Cathy Kelley is outside of GM Regal’s office where Regal can be overheard shouting at the Undisputed Era about what happened earlier. Regal takes a moment to calm himself and says this is NOT the way we do things.
At Takeover XXV, Matt Riddle will face Roderick Strong. Tonight, Riddle & Gargano will fight O’Reilly & Fish.
Third Segment: The Velveteen Dream Experience
nXt North American Champion Velveteen Dream comes to the ring for a little self-promotion. Dream says lots of people want to feel the Dream and hold on to him. Quite frankly, he’s too big to hold, he says.
Shortly after this, it’s Tyler Breeze! Fans pop big time for the return of this nXt original. A “Breeze is gorgeous” chant starts up, followed by a “Welcome home” chant.
Prince Pretty acknowledges the chants. He says when he was in nXt, everyone was talking about him. Ever since the fashion left, it feels a little dull. There are wannabe impersonators and cheap knockoffs, and while that may be flattering, there can only be one Prince Pretty.
Breeze looks at himself in his phone as Dream welcomes home to the Dream’s nXt. The fans want a real man, not a boy who plays cops and robbers. Dream tells Breeze to run along home to Monday and Tuesday where he couldn’t cut it.
Let’s not confuse “couldn’t hack it” with “uninspired”, says Breeze. He’s inspired by the North American Championship and an inspired Tyler Breeze is too much and too big for Dream to handle.
Dream says we do things differently here in Dream’s nXt. The line starts outside so start going there. Dream suggests a selfie with the champ before Breeze leaves.
Breeze admits this is a monumental moment. He asks aloud a few times if he should take this selfie with Dream. Dream says he doesn’t have all day. Breeze agrees. They take the selfie, Breeze gives Dream advice that no one’s interested in calling him up and punches him to the mat.
After a commercial break, Kelley catches up with Breeze before he leaves Full Sail. Breeze says he’s an nXt OG and he just wanted to introduce Velveteen Dream to an inspired Prince Pretty.
Fourth Segment: Candice LeRae vs. Reina Gonzalez
Gonzalez is touted by Ranallo as akin to Stan Hansen. She carrys a cowbell on a rope to the ring. Very tall standing in front of LeRae. Phoenix says she’s 6’0’’.
Spinning powerslam for a 2 count by Gonzalez. Top wristlock has LeRae struggling back to her feet. She’s thrown into the corner. LeRae evades a charge by Gonzalez and meets her with an arm DDT.
The two ladies spin to the ropes and Gonzalez spills to the outside. Baseball slide by LeRae. From the apron, springboard crossbody into Gonzalez’s arms. LeRae slips off and pushes Gonzalez into the ring steps.
Back in the ring, LeRae goes to the top rope and hits a beauty hurricanrana. Slaps and punches force Gonzalez to the opposite corner. Running back elbow! High-flying missile dropkick. Springboard moonsault from the second rope. 1-2-3.
Winner: Candice LeRae via pinfall in 4 minutes
Post-match, nXt Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir surround the ring on 3 sides. They fly in and beat up on her until Io Shirai arrives with a kendo stick. That equalizes the fight and all 3 horsewomen take some vicious strikes, especially Shafir.
Fans applaud that beatdown by Shirai who goes to check on LeRae as the others retreat up the ramp in pain.
1 cool point for LeRae, for a fun match and some great high-flying moves. 1 cool point for Shirai channeling her inner Tommy Dreamer to clear the ring post-match, helping out LeRae. That’s a good sign since Baszler’s been looking undefeatable for a number of weeks.
Main Event: Johnny Gargano (c) & Matt Riddle vs. Undisputed Era
Kyle O’Reilly & Bobby Fish are representing the UE in this match, according to GM Regal’s decision.
Highlights include:
O’Reilly and Gargano begin with a little grappling on the mat. Test of strength as they join hands. Triangle by O’Reilly. Gargano flips over and briefly puts the GargaNo Escape on his opponent.
Shortly thereafter, Fish is tagged in. Off the ropes, Fish halts his own momentum and slams Gargano to the mat. He beefs at Riddle until O’Reilly flies at him from the apron. He and Fish knock Riddle down. Gargano viciously kicks Fish’s face and Fish falls on the outside mat.
“Bro” chants and Riddle tags in, dishing out massive slaps on Fish’s chest. Next are some Bro kicks to the chest. Flying forearms! Exploder suplex. Riddle’s showing them who’s boss.
Gutwrench suplex, holds on and another one where Riddle deadlifts Fish. Now it’s O’Reilly receiving one. Riddle can’t do the second one due to his injured ribs. As Riddle feels weak, Fish & O’Reilly beat up on him in their home corner.
Sliding knee strike by O’Reilly for a 2 count. Fans are clapping for Riddle to fight back. This leads to a double team snap suplex. Fish covers for another 2 count.
Gargano stretches his hand out but Riddle’s nowhere close to tagging in. Fish with knees to the chest on Riddle and he tags in O’Reilly. Abdominal stretch while Riddle’s seated on the mat. Transitions to a 2 count pinfall.
Riddle finally breaks free with a knee strike and tags in Gargano. He clotheslines Fish multiple times. Overhead belly to belly suplex on O’Reilly. Running bulldog on Fish simultaneously clotheslining O’Reilly. Close fall on Fish.
Chasing The Dragon on Gargano! 1-2- kickout! O’Reilly is pissed. He tags Fish in again.
Riddle bounces right out of a high-angle German suplex by O’Reilly. Penalty kick! All 4 men are laid out on the mat as the fans chant their praises.
Riddle connects with a Floating Bro on Fish! 1-2- O’Reilly interrupts with a double axe handle to the injured ribs. Yikes.
WOW! Gargano just launched O’Reilly directly into a Riddle knee to the head. Counter by Riddle on Fish into a powerbomb, then a knee strike. 1-2- Fish is dragged out of the ring.
Adam Cole comes down the ramp where Gargano meets him with an outside dive. Meanwhile, Roderick Strong arrives on the scene to take out Riddle. He rolls him in to receive High & Low from O’Reilly & Fish. 1-2-3. Shenanigans prevail to get the win for the UEra.
Winners: Undisputed Era via pinfall in 14 minutes
Post-match, it’s a 4 on 2 beatdown, which peaks with a Last Shot by Cole on Gargano. Cole jaws at a fallen Gargano as the 4 pose in the ring.
2 cool points for everybody. This is one of those fantastic nXt main event tag matches that consistently entertains and, even though you know the Undisputed Era are likely going to cheat, it still ends up being a surprise because you’re so immersed in the match.
With so many of the TakeOver XXV matches connected to the Undisputed Era, it makes sense that it’s Roderick Strong costing Riddle’s team the match. Even Cole getting his last word in was, narratively speaking, a slick and suitable finish to the evening’s fights.
Looking at the roster right now, is there a better heel than Adam Cole? I wonder who Gargano would feud with though, if not Cole. No one else is even close to that level. For that reason, the UEra may not get their goal of wearing all the gold.
