Former WWE NXT Superstars Dan Matha (Dorian Mak) and Tino Piscitelli (Tino Sabbatelli) recently discussed their WWE departures and runs with the company during the first episode of Matha’s new “The Drop” podcast, which you can watch above.
Mak and Sabbatelli confirmed their departures and said they both feel like they were not given an opportunity to succeed with the company. Mak, who started with WWE in 2016, revealed that he asked for his release and it was granted. Sabbatelli, who made his NXT debut in 2015, said he was released in mid-April as a part of the company-wide cuts brought on by COVID-19.
“I am not going to sit here and dedicate myself for five years to NXT … and walk away without getting a legit opportunity,” Tino said.
Tino also said he believes his persona would have fit better on the main roster.
“A lot of people told me, once Vince [McMahon] sees you in that spotlight, he can see the it factor quick,” explained Tino, who calls himself one of the greatest athletes to ever step foot in WWE. “I think a lot of people told me, personally, they felt my character was better suited for a Raw or SmackDown.”
Mak also said he doesn’t think he was given a fair shot in WWE.
“Our situations are similar, in the regards that we weren’t given the opportunities,” Mak said.
They agreed that well-built, naturally-athletic talents like themselves are being disregarded in WWE. They also argued that a diverse roster is necessary for success.
“When you have all those different flavors, you come up with a tasty ass recipe,” Mak added.
Sabbatelli acknowledged that the coronavirus pandemic played a role in his departure, but he still doesn’t agree with the decision.
“I understand this is situational … but I don’t think you let a guy like Tino go,” Tino said.
Tino and Mak both indicated that they will continue their pro wrestling careers. They will be able to sign with other companies after May 15.
