Vic Joseph Sit-Down Interview With Ilja Dragunov

Vic Joseph: Ilja, thank you for taking time with me. I know you have a very busy schedule as champion. And you’ve been champion now for just about a month. What has been like now to be the champion and no longer chasing the championship?

Ilja Dragunov: Vic, I previously talked about how it was my destiny to become the NXT Champion and those words weren’t hallow words. Since I was a child, life was a struggle. My family moved from Russia to Germany and we had nothing. I learned really fast; I can endure pain as long as it has a reason. And it’s exactly that, that brought me here. I’m very proud to be the NXT Champion. I traveled home recently, and my son was holding this title for the very first time. And the look in his eyes, he looked at me with pride in his father. And this was the absolute exact motivation to carry on as a great champion.

Vic Joseph: You bring up these journeys, so let’s bring up the journey you’re going to be on during the next week or so. You’re in the main event of Halloween Havoc Night Two against Carmelo Hayes. What’s the mindset for you heading into this match, because this time you’re the champion, you’re not the challenger against Carmelo Hayes?

Ilja Dragunov: Vic, just because I walk into Halloween Havoc as champion, my attack doesn’t change. It might even intensify because I understand the pain it took to achieve this. I recognize that this will be another classic. I might bend, but I won’t break. Carmelo Hayes will break exactly like he did at No Mercy.

Vic Joseph: What are you going to have to do, maybe a little bit differently in this match to retain your NXT Championship?

Ilja Dragunov: Vic, I don’t understand the question because I don’t adjust to anyone. My opponents adjust to me. Carmelo Hayes will enter this fight as a desperate man. Desperate to regain this championship. But I believe that Carmelo is not fully focus on this title like he used to be. My mind has been on this championship for a very long time. Carmelo can’t say the same, and this will be his downfall. The intangibles will be the deciding factor. This represents 30 years of sacrifice. It’s the visible proof that I am The Unbesiegbar.
