Commentary by Mauro Ranallo, Nigel McGuinness and Percy Watson

Opening Segment

Mauro Ranallo does the voiceover, looking back on the events that took place at the end of last week’s show. With LeRae hurt and the feud between Gargano and Ciampa continuing to heat up, nXt General Manager has barred both men from being at tonight’s show. They have been booked for a Chicago street fight for Takeover: Chicago and must sign the contract individually, and send it back to Regal before the event.

We cut to the return of nXt Champion Aleister Black to FSU.

He grabs the mic and says a few things about only needing one shot to knock his opponents out, one shot to fade them to black. This cues Lars Sullivan’s music and he approaches the ring.

Sullivan says, per GM Regal, he will be the first challenger at Takeover: Chicago. Sullivan proves he was listening to Black’s words by repeating them. He respects what Black has done over his entire wrestling career but he’s never faced anyone like him before. No one has his strength, size or dominance. Sullivan says Black can’t ignore what’s going to happen to him in Chicago. Black is looking at the next champ and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Sullivan attacks. Black goes for Black Mass. Sullivan stops his leg in mid-kick, catching it, and delivers the FREAK ACCIDENT to Black! He picks up the title belt and holds it high as the fans boo.

Second Segment

Hey! Fozzy’s song “Painless” is one of the Takeover: Chicago themes this year. Way to go, Jericho.
We see a tweet from Candice LeRae stating she is okay, but she does not support the Street Fight. She’s done watching his husband turn into everything he despises.

Tag Team Match: War Raiders vs. George Hickson & Cody Vincent

Hickson launches himself at Rowe to begin this match. Rowe laughs and chucks Hickson to the mat. Tag is made to Hanson and the onslaught begins. Hickson’s hip-tossed to his partner and Vincent is beckoned into the ring by Hanson.

Hanson chucks Vincent into the WR corner. Tag is made. Rowe with a flurry of punches on Vincent. Overhead suplex. Vincent lands on his neck. He’s sat up in the corner and he is crushed by the full weight of both men, individually taking turns to run and sit on him in the corner.

Hickson’s brought back into the ring. Rowe holds Hickson as Hanson does a springboard flying clothesline to knock Hickson to the mat. Deadlift by Rowe, holding him up to receive a guillotine leg drop by Hanson. It’s alllll over- a dominating victory.
McGuinness says they might get a Tag Team Title shot very soon.

Winners: War Raiders via pinfall in 3 minutes

One cool point for the offensive display by Hanson and Rowe. Utter destruction. I’d like to see a few more squash matches to build up how intense these guys are.

A promo building up the Women’s Championship match is shown. Kai indicates her dream to be the next nXt Women’s Champion. Baszler is shown beating up on and harassing Kai over the past few months. Last week, Kai finally stood up to her in a backstage interview. Perhaps we’ll see more of that tonight.

Third Segment

Cathy Kelley catches up with Lacey Evans backstage. She reminds Evans that the series is 1-1 between her and Kairi Sane. Evans says she does whatever it takes to win. She doesn’t care that Sane was the Mae Young Tourney winner; she has the right, the Women’s Right.

Singles Match: EC3 vs. Fabian Aichner

Man, EC3 is ripped and he is fired up to fight tonight. Ranallo says that Aichner’s a step or two away from really putting it together in an nXt ring. The whole team compliments him.

Pretty even to start out. Both guys get their strikes in. Aichner surprises with a diving back elbow off the ropes. Gutwrench and a cover for 1 count. Aichner falls hard to the outside after slipping on the ropes and getting nailed in the head by EC3 simultaneously.

Suddenly, Johnny Gargano walks through the ringside area, grabs a mic from the announce table and holds up a signed contrast for Gargano vs. Ciampa 2 in Chicago. He announces that to everyone and then walks out.

EC3 looks on, curiously, but he doesn’t see that Aichner is on the top turnbuckle. Aichner gets some major air and splashes Carter on the outside. EC3 doesn’t let it phase him too much. He nails Aichner with the fireman’s carry into a swinging neckbreaker, aka the One Percenter. 1-2-3.

Winner: EC3 via pinfall in 4 minutes

One cool point for Aichner’s top rope splash to the outside. Worth a watch on the highlight reel. One cool point for EC3 just cause he showed up and won. He’s a rare sight on nXt TV, and it’s clear that his appearances are being kept limited so that he retains a special aura around him. Smart play by nXt.

Part 2 of Bianca Belair’s promo is shown. She speaks about her upbringing, being bred to be the best, and coming from a family of trailblazers. She shares a lot about her school experience, lessons learned and the move to Crossfit, which led her to nXt. Belair believes she’s the best in the division and she is proving it every night. She’s going to shine.

Fourth Segment

Singles Match: Ricochet vs. Chris Dijak
This is Dijak’s nXt TV debut.

Ricochet opens up with punches on Dijak. Front roll and a front kick by Ricochet knocks Dijak out to the ramp. Ricochet goes for a diving splash through the ropes. Dijak stops him in the air and choke slams him on the apron. Dijak with a springboard flying elbow! Crowd is stunned. He almost wins with the 3 count.
Dijak goes for a moonsault but Ricochet rolls out of the way. Dijak is showing off his whole arsenal. Ricochet with a leaping axe kick on Dijak. A ridiculous feat of power and strength by Ricochet who suplexes Dijak and then lifts him up again from dead weight to hit him again. 630 SPLASH! Ricochet finishes standing up and goes back to pin Dijak.

Winners: Ricochet via pinfall in 4 minutes

Post-match, Ricochet grabs the mic and discusses The Velveteen Dream being one of the most entertaining superstars in nXt. The spotlight shows your talents but it also shows your flaws.

Dream’s music cuts him off and Dream saunters out on to the stage. Dream says tonight is Ricochet’s spotlight. Last week was our spotlight. Dream says anything you can do, I can do better.

Ricochet says the only thing Dream’s doing is showing how cowardly he is by standing on the stage. He calls him out to the ring! Dream appears to be responding but then he stops at the bottom of the ramp. He says there’s only one spotlight big enough to contain the two of them: Takeover: Chicago.
Ricochet meets Dream out on the ramp by doing a front flip over the top rope and landing on the bottom of the ramp, cleanly. Crowd is floored. Dream is floored. This dude is something else!

Two cool points for Ricochet’s amazing win, and special attention to the show of strength with the deadlift on 6’8’’ Dijak. Dijak gets a cool point for making the most of his minutes tonight. Yeah, he lost, but the dude is athletic.

Final Segment

nXt Women’s Championship Match: Shayna Baszler (c) vs. Dakota Kai

Match takes a bit of time to start but soon, Baszler is targeting body parts on Kait, stomping down on her hand. Baszler moves to a submission strategy, torqueing the ankle of Kai back. Kai tries to slap herself free. Baszler’s not letting go and she works over the ankle and Achilles’ tendon of Kai. Baszler harasses Kai a little more.

Baszler locks in an ankle lock for quite a while until Kai crawls to the ropes. That doesn’t last long though, and Baszler is right back to the ankle lock.
Kai fights her way free. Bicycle kick! She can’t go for the cover though because Baszler’s back to her feet. High kick to the face of Baszler! Running knee in the corner!

Kai can’t convert this momentum into a victory though, and Baszler manages to secure her in the Kirifuda Clutch. This wears down Kai and forces her to tap.

Winner, and still Women’s Champion: Shayna Baszler via submission in 9 minutes

Post-match, Baszler locks in that same submission move, trying to pass out Kai. Suddenly, it’s Nikki Cross! She’s shrieking and hitting herself. She breaks up Baszler and Kai. Fans are chanting Nikki’s name. Baszler and Cross just stare each other down though and no other latercation takes place….oh wait! As Baszler walks up the ramp, Cross rushes behind her, steals the title belt, and brings it back to the ring with her.
Cross beckons for Baszler to come and get it! She lays down the title on the mat. Baszler slowly approaches. Cross rushes, steals the title again and the standoff continues.

Cross yells about Kai being the referee to supervise the fight with her and Baszler. Cross hits THE PURGE. Kai counts the 3 but nXt referees do not acknowledge the victory. Cross holds up the title and brings it out into the crowd to celebrate. She then walks up the ramp a bit, holding her arms up high as Baszler looks on in some pain.

One cool point for Baszler for seeing how effective her submission work could be against Kai. That was a refreshing strategy to see during a time when so many wrestlers are oriented towards high-flying, athletic manoeuvres.

One cool point for Nikki Cross’ surprise attack and then the surprise of stealing the belt and setting up a mock match! Fantastic character development, reminding us fans of Cross’ instability yet vicious instincts. She sets herself up as an excellent and worthy foe for Baszler.
