Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins Discuss Becoming Edgeheads

Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins became the Edgeheads in 2007 during a World Heavyweight title match between Edge, Batista, and the Undertaker. Prior to the match, Edge told Vickie Guerrero that her love gave him the strength of three men. Both Ryder and Hawkins dressed up as Edge and interfered in the match. Edge took advantage and won the title.

Hawkins and Ryder talked to Chris Jericho on the latest Talk is Jericho podcast and gave him the rundown on how the gimmick came to be.

“We barely knew him,” Hawkins said about Edge. “There was supposed to be some kind of tag team division in ECW that never happened. We were just a green babyface tag team doing nothing. Back then in developmental, there would be a day when writers would come down and you had to put on a fake performance for them. You do a full entrance, a promo, and a six-minute match. We were in OVW but also on TV. We see Michael Hayes and are like, ‘You guys are coming this week, what do we do?’ He goes, ‘Well, show me something different!’ Alright, F you. We were watching a lot of Entourage at the time, we were like, ‘What if we were Edge’s entourage.’ We raided the merch drawer of all the Edge stuff and that week we came out to the music, cut the promo, and that got the wheels spinning. Michael Hayes was impressed by it all and then we had to conjure up this plan of how we could be with Edge.”

He continued, “We know [Edge] as a ‘hello, goodbye’ conversation. That’s it. I went up to him and said, ‘We have this idea, would you mind…’ and he gave me his email. I wrote a concise email and luckily, he actually read it and liked it enough to talk to Michael. The real deciding factor if we really looked like him — he brought a bunch of extra gear and we hid in an office at TV and tried it all on. We were waiting for Michael to come see it. Funaki saw it by accident and was like, ‘Ohhhh, you guys.’ If Funaki digs it and believes it, I think we’re good.”
