AEW Dynamite 1/24/24
Live from the Enmarket Arena in Savannah, Georgia! Taz, Tony Schiavone, and Excalibur are on commentary and here comes the champ!
Joe stands before us the undisputed, undeniable, AEW World Heavyweight Champion. No more will opportunities be given. Tonight, they must be earned. Anyone who comes to the ring will be done like Hook was last week. Joe will take everything.
SEND. HOOK.
Hook is here, looking completely fine after the beating that was put on him last week. Hook shakes Joe’s hand and says he will see him again soon. Joe says he’s sure he will, but now he’s got to get to the back of the line and brings in security. Hook disposes of security and that’s that.
Match #1. Penta el Zero Miedo vs. Hangman Page
Zero miedo vs. cowboy s* to start. Page runs into a superkick and Penta runs into a big boot. Slingblade by Penta. Springboard by Penta but Page catches him with a fallaway slam. Kip up by Page and some boots in the corner. Running boot to a seated Penta, who is staring daggers at Joe and the title belt at ringside. Victory roll into a bottom rope assisted leg drop by Penta. Two count. Both men now trade overhand chops in the corner. Snap suplex by Page gets one. Fight spills to the outside as Page throws Penta into the ringpost and has a discussion with Joe. Back in the ring and Page flattens Penta with a big boot. Another boot sends Penta to the outside but Penta avoids a plancha and hits a tope con hilo to Page. Penta misses a double stomp and Page absolutely drills him with a Death Valley Driver! Two count. Page charges and walks into a superkick. Penta sends Page up and over and catches him with a superkick in mid-air. Spinning Spiccoli Driver by Penta gets two. Penta looks to snap the shoulder of Page but Page rolls through, pops Penta up into a sit-out Liger Bomb! Two count. Both guys are fighting on the apron now as Penta looks for a Fear Factor and Page looks for a Deadeye and neither are successful. Penta gets in the ring and Page throws up a Buckshot, but Penta counters with the Made in Japan! One, two, no! Page is on the apron and Penta leaps over the top looking for a quick Destroyer but Page counters with the Deadeye! Moonsault off the top to the floor! Page rolls Penta in and looks for the Buckshot but Penta ducks and Page connects with a lariat, before finishing this with the Buckshot after all!
Winner: Hangman Page
Rating: ***3/4. Just a solid wrestling match here with both men’s focus on the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. Page and his mustache have seemingly found a new gear, and that gear is Magnum TA.
Renee is in the back with Orange Cassidy. Cassidy accepts Roderick Strong’s challenge for Revolution, but he’s going to continue wrestling until then. Apparently there’s a match with some of Cassidy’s frenemies this Friday on Rampage, and the winner will wrestle Cassidy on Saturday.
Nicholas and Matthew Jackson are here. As the only two remaining EVPs, they fixed the catering problem, thankfully.
Match #2. Warlow w/ The Undisputed Kingdom vs. Trent w/ Best Friends
Shoulder block and an F10 by Wardlow. Wardlow looks for the powerbomb but Trent counters with a small package. Trent sends him to the outside and follows up with some baseballs slides. Plancha by Trent but Wardlow hits him with a forearm in mid-air and proceeds to ping pong Trent off the guardrail. Back in the ring and Wardlow sends Trent into the corner hard, causing Trent to Flair-flop over the top and to the floor. Wardlow throws Trent into some more stuff outside the ring, before looking for the big lariat inside the ring, only for Trent to counter with a rising knee strike. Suicide dive by Trent! The referee is arguing with Adam Cole so Trent takes a chair to his back and face. Half-and-half suplex and a tornado DDT by Trent. Piledriver by Trent! Long two count. Trent looks for a crossbody off the top but Wardlow catches him and hits a spinning powerslam. Wardlow drapes Trent on the top rope and hits him with a hard knee on the way down. Stalling Last Ride by Wardlow! That’ll do it.
Winner: Wardlow
Rating: ***1/4. This has to be the longest match in a few years for Wardlow. Heck of a match, too. Wardlow looked strong here and Trent’s offense looked believable, just couldn’t overcome the size difference.
After the match, Trent is consoled by Best Friends but he shoves Orange Cassidy away but they all quickly make up. Trent and Rocky stay in the ring together.

Renee welcomes Toni Storm and Deonna Purrazzo to the stage for a faceoff. Storm says she’s heard Deonna has been body shamed, which is crazy, because there are so many other things to shame. Storm has had many friends, all of them less talented than Storm is. Deonna says this is crazy and she came to AEW to win the Women’s World Championship, and she will take it arm-by-arm. Deonna shows us her ankle, which has a matching tattoo to Toni Storm’s ankle. Storm says this is ridiculous and throws a shoe. Deonna throws a shoe back and attacks Storm, looking for the Venus de Milo, but settles for a pump kick to Luther’s face.
Jon Moxley is here and says he’s going to maim and torture anyone who steps up to them who thinks they are “elite”. Moxley will do it every single time because these people paid their hard earned money to see it, and AEW is supposed to be the best wrestling company on the planet.
Taya Valkyrie and Johnny TV are here. Taya said she’s back and there’s this new girl trying to cut the line. No butts, no cuts, no coconuts, baby. Taya wants Deonna next week.
Match #3. Swerve Strickland vs. Jeff Hardy
Quick pinning combinations by Swerve. Hardy then takes his pendant off and throws it at Matt. Roll up by Hardy with the trunks gets two. Hardy misses a charge in the corner and Swerve hits a back suplex backbreaker. Hardy antiicpates the trip by Swerve and Hardy splashes him. Dropkick by Hardy. Hardy runs into a big boot and a Russian Leg Sweep by Swerve. Double leg drop to an upside-down Swerve. Two count. Hardy on the apron and Swerve trips up the legs and superkicks him in the face, forcing Hardy to hang upside down on the outside. Running neckbreaker by Swerve on the floor, to a draping Hardy! Swerve looks for a Meteora on Hardy seated in a chair, but Hardy swipes the feet and Swerve lands hard. Air Hardy in the corner of the guardrail off the steel steps takes Swerve into the front row! Back in the ring, Swerve catches Hardy on the top rope but Hardy throws him off after a headbutt. Hardy tries a moonsault but Swerve crotches him yet again. Hardy fights Swerve off again finally and finally it’s a Whisper in the Wind by Hardy, Swerve is up first for some reason, but he catches a kick Hardy and Hardy connects with a rebound kick. Twist of Fate blocked. Diving reverse DDT by Hardy and a double leg drop by Hardy and a diving elbow. Two count. Hardy goes up top again but Swerve pushes him off and to the apron. Swerve Irish whips Hardy into the far side ring post. Hardy and Swerve standing on top of the steel steps now, and Hardy hits the Twist of Fate ON the steps! Swanton by Jeff but Swerve moves. Houescall by Swerve! Two count. Trio of jaw breakers by Hardy but he walks into the Rolling Thunder Flatliner. Deadlift delayed vertical suplex. Swerve Stomp! One, two, three!
Winner: Swerve Strickland
Rating: **3/4. Thank goodness for Swerve, here. Hardy was clearly off and behind in several spots, but Swerve is a pro’s pro and he got them through it.
Hangman and Swerve are in the back with Renee. Next year it’ll be dealer’s choice matches for each other.
Match #4. Thunder Rosa vs. Red Velvet
Gator roll by Rosa but Velvet gets to the ropes. Arm drags by both women now as Velvet struggles to send Rosa up and over the top and to the floor. Hard chops by Velvet on the outside as Rosa responds in kind. Velvet stretches Rosa’s arm and shoulder around the ring post before rolling her back inside the ring. Bicep slicer by Rosa, before transitioning into a standing kimura and pulling guard. Rosa slams her way out of the hold. Basement dropkick to Velvet on the bottom rope. Northern Light’s suplex for two. Velvet with some body shoes to Rosa before rolling through a victory roll into a double stomp. Running double knees to the back of the head by Velvet. Rosa looks for a double underhook something but settles for a shotgun dropkick. Double underhook spin out slam, aka the Tijuana Bomb, gets the win.
Winner: Thunder Rosa
Rating: **. This match felt like it never really got going, unfortunately. Some awkward spots throughout the match but they’re building Rosa back up slowly.
Tony Schiavone welcomes Darby Allin and Sting to the ring. Darby says when he thought Sting was coming to AEW, he flew to Texas, rolled around with Sting at the ring in his house, and told him he’s still got it. Darby said to get back in the ring and finish the career on his own terms. 27-0 and they’re undefeated. That record puts them in the top spot for a tag team title match. Darby asks Sting if he wants to end his career as an AEW Tag Team Champion? The entire arena chants “Sting!” as Sting says he’s All In.
Match #5. AEW World Trios Championship: The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass (c) vs. The Mogul Embassy
Bullet Club Gold joins The Acclaimed and it seems like we’re looking at The Bang Bang Scissor Gang. Caster goes up an over Cage and dropkicks him. Bowens with a quick tag and some heavy strikes. Elbow and forearms shots by Bowens but Cage back him into his corner. Gates of Agony beat Bowens down in the corner with frequent tags. Cage runs into a big boot in the corner but Bowens hits an enziguiri. Gates of Agony remove Caster and Gunn from the apron. Nana trips Bowens up and Toa pounces him to the floor. In the ring, snap suplex by Cage. Running avalanche by Toa and more quick tags by Mogul Embassy. Cage charges Bowens in the corner but Bowens gets a boot up and comes off the top with a Blockbuster. Kaun gets the tag and gets back body dropped. Tag to Billy Gunn and he cleans house with right hands. Gunn looks for the FameAsser to Cage but Toa pounces him. Superkick by Bowens to Toa. F5 by Cage. Shotgun dropkick by Kaun. Pedidgree to Gunn gets a long two. Nana rolls a chair in the ring but Jay White makes the save! Billy Gunn hits the Cobra Clutch Slam on Kaun as The Gunn Club powerbombs Nana through a table at ringside! Cage measures Gunn but Bowens is here with a Kitaro Crusher. 3D by The Acclaimed to Toa. The Arrival and The Mic Drop to Kaun and this one is over.

Rating: **1/4. This was fine, but it felt rushed. Obviously they’re trying to pack as much in tonight as they can, but this kind of just felt… here.
Match #6. Adam Copeland vs. Minoru Suzuki
“Holy S” chants from the crowd as both men throw BOMBS in center ring. Copeland drops! Gotch Style Piledriver by Suzuki early but Copeland blocks it with a back body drop. Copeland follows Suzuki in the ropes and gets locked in a triangle, momentarily. Big boot to Suzuki on the apron and a spear to follow, but Suzuki counters with a knee to the face. Suzuki locks in a guillotine and pulls Copeland to the floor, but Copeland drives him through the barricade and both men crash through to the floor! Both men barely make it back inside by the ten count, and we restart. Both men trade shots from their knees as they work to their feet and are dropped simultaneously with overhand palm strikes. Elbows by both men, with Copeland bouncing off the ropes and delivering a running elbow. Suzuki looks for the armbar but Copeland counters with the Impaler DDT. Copeland looks for a spear but Suzuki counters with a Fujiwara armbar! Copeland struggles to get to the ropes but finally does. Suzuki looks for the rear naked choke but Copeland fights out, hits the ropes, and delivers a spear. Suzuki is out at two! Copeland is shocked but Suzuki sits up and locks in the rear naked choke from behind. Suzuki has it looked in deep and Copeland is going out! Copeland gets to his feet and sends Suzuki into the turnbuckle face-first. Killswitch to Suzuki and this one is over!
Winner: Adam Copeland
Rating: ***1/4. Listen, the match didn’t have a lot of time, but this was more about the “dream” aspect. Both dudes brought the heat tonight, as expected, and Copeland got to check another dream match off of his bucket list, on the way to Christian Cage.
After the match, Copeland struggles to his feet knowing that he’s been in a fight tonight. Copeland takes the mic and says he’s never been hit that hard in his life. Copeland says, “Suzuki? Respect.” and he extends his hand. Suzuki growls at him and walks away. Copeland says that the type of war that Christian Cage knows nothing about. Copeland is still coming after Christian.
Final Thoughts: Kind of a meandering show tonight that didn’t have much direction. The wrestling was fine, but it felt like a heavy dose of filler. Hook got a heck of a lot last week when he lost to Joe, and this week it just felt a little out of place, especially him on the microphone at all. The Bang Bang Scissor Gang stuff is fun, the TNT Championship journey of Copeland took another step forward, and Samoa Joe and the commentary team drove home the point that wins and losses matter big time now… so we did accomplish some good things. 7/10.
