AEW Rampage 12/16/22

Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone, and Excalibur are here and we’re heading to the matches!

Match #1. Jon Moxley vs. Sammy Guevara

Guevara starts the match off with a flying knee before Moxley takes control and chops Guevara to the ground. Moxley gets distracted by Tay Melo on the outside and that allows Guevara to take control with a big running knee strike. Moxley drops Sammy crotch-first on the guard rail and then proceeds to clothesline Guevara to the ground. Ace Crusher by Moxley catches Sammy coming inside the ring. Moxley with a superplex off the middle rope that gets a one count. Corkscrew drop kick by Guevara sends Moxley to the outside. Guevara goes up top but Moxley catches him and rakes the back. Guevara returns the favor and both men are jockeying for the superplex to the outside. Moxley gets shoved to the apron as Guevara comes off the top with a big double stomp! On the outside now and it looks like Guevara ripped the earring out of Moxley’s ear, ripping the lobe in half! Moxley tries to fight back but Guevara focuses the attack on the side of Moxley’s head now. Tony Schiavone brings up the infamous Vader vs. Cactus Jack match and that brings back some great memories. Tay rips at Moxley’s ear before slapping him in the face as Guevara meets her on the outside and they share a kiss… with Moxley’s blood. Yikes. Moxley catches Guevara with a suicide dive before rolling him in the ring and battering him with ten punches in the corner. Guevara back flips out of a German suplex and hits an enziguiri. Diving twisting cutter off the top rope by Guevara gets a two count. GTH by Guevara but Moxley counters into a powerbom and Guevara flips to his feet. Walls of Jericho by Guevara and Moxley is in trouble. Moxley makes it to the ropes and both men trade strikes in the center of the ring. Moxley drops Guevara and follows up with a BIG curb stomp. Two count. Both men roll to the outside now and Moxley grabs a table. Guevara hits a knee to the face and heads up top… swanton by Guevara and both men go crashing through the announcer’s table. Guevara rolls Moxley back in the ring and comes off the top with a cross body, but Moxley reverses into a piledriver. Lariat by Moxley! Guevara flips out of the Death Rider and Guevara hits a Death Rider of his own! Guevara with a senton atomico that gets another long two! Guevara puts Moxley on the top… Spanish Fly! Moxley rolls through the Spanish Fly, floats over, and locks in a Bulldog Choke! Guevara is fading… Guevara is out!

Winner: Jon Moxley

Rating: ***1/2. Jon Moxley doing Jon Moxley stuff, as usual. Really hot match here to open the show and this crowd (the same crowd from Wednesday, btw) was on fire for it. Moxley finds a way to win, and he should. Guevara can do a lot of cool stuff in the ring, but the crowd still hates him.

Moxley grabs the mic and says he’s not waiting all night, he wants Cowboy.

Enter Cowboy.

Both men brawl all around the ring side area and Moxley gets out of the way of a Buckshot Lariat, but a poor unsuspecting security guard can not and he eats one.

Back from break and FTR is in the ring. Cash said last week kind of sucked, and not just because they lost to The Acclaimed and The Briscoe Brothers. Cash says FTR feels like they let the fans down. FTR owes the fans eternally for that as the crowd serenades them with “you deserve it” chants. Cash says the Ass Boys have daddy issues and they are next on the list. Dax says he doesn’t know why people love them so much, but Saturday night at Final Battle, FTR wanted to make the fans feel, and the Ass Boys took that from them. Wednesday, they’re getting an ass whooping.

Match #2. Dr. Britt Baker DMD vs. Skye Blue

Butterfly suplex by Britt to start. Arm drag by Blue as both women trade holds while we go into PIP. Blue goes up top but gets distracted by Rebel and Hayter, allowing Britt to connect with the Anarchist Suplex off the top. Another butterfly suplex by Britt. Two count. Big clothesline by Britt as we head into commercial break. Back from the break and Blue gets a two count with a superkick. Britt ducks an attack and Britt lands the Slingblade. Twisting butterfly suplex (think Marty Scurll’s “Graduation”). Big curb stomp by Britt and that will do it for this one.

Winner: Dr. Britt Baker DMD

Rating: *3/4. This certainly was a match. An underwhelming match, to be honest. The commercial break in the middle of it didn’t do any favors, but Britt could definitely use a win so I’ll take it.

Hikaru Shida is here with the kendo stick and she takes out Britt and Rebel. Hayter and Shida go face-to-face in advance of their AEW Women’s World Title match on Wednesday.

Preston Vance sits down with Jim Ross and tells him he was handpicked by Brody Lee and the rest of the Dark Order weren’t. Vance thinks -1 needs to grow up.

Match #3. Wardlow vs. Exodus Prime

Headbutt by Wardlow. Lariat. Powerbomb number one. Number two. Three. Four.

Winner: Wardlow

Rating: NR

Wardlow takes the mic and calls out Joe. Joe appears on screen and tells Wardlow that he would never wrestle in Texas, but he’ll give him what he wants in Colorado on December 28th. We’ve got a match.

Match #4. Dustin Rhodes & The Best Friends vs. Kip Sabian, Trent Seven, Butcher, & Blade

Sabian and Trent to start. Trent wants Trent Seven. Trent vs. Trent. Both men exchange chops but Seven gets the better of it. Each man screaming “I AM THE TRENT”. This quickly breaks down into an all-out brawl as Sabian and Cassidy exchange arm drags but Sabian gets sent to the outside. Cassidy looks for a dive but The Bunny and Penelope Ford shield Sabian as Cassidy gets run over by The Butcher. Trent in now isolated as the Butcher and Blade take turns stomping on him. Cassidy gets the tag and it’s a double team sidewalk slam/leg drop combo by Butcher and Blade. Sabian in now with a snap mare to Cassidy and a few Orange kicks, before picking up the intensity and delivering some stomps. Blade is now and they’re toying with Cassidy. Cassidy makes the hot tag to Dustin who hits a powerslam on Seven. Powerslam to Sabian. Dustin moves and Seven hits a senton to Sabian. Butcher and Blade DRAG THE LAKE to Cassidy. Double dropkick by Trent to both men. GOTTA GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT. Stereo dive to the outside by Best Friends. Sabian with a springboard Arabian press takes out Best Friends. Cannonball senton by Rhodes off the apron! Cassidy in the ring now but The Bunny is in the ring and Cassidy takes a hard bump behind the referees back (Eddie Guerrero spot). HERE’S DANHAUSEN! Danhausen takes a bump too as both Danhausen and Cassidy are on the ground in pain and the referee sends both Ford and The Bunny to the back. Sabian goes low on Danhausen! Pop-up knee to the face of Danhausen. The Trent’s are legal now. Superplex attempt by Trent but Seven counters to a sit out Emerald Flowsion in mid-air off the top! Running Dallas Destroyer by Rhodes to Sabian! Dustin looks for Shattered Dreams but the referee steps up, so Orange kicks Sabian. There’s Shattered Dreams! Orange Punch to Trent Seven and a bulldog by Dustin seals it!

Winners: Dustin Rhodes & Best Friends

Rating: **1/2. Lots of chicanery in this one, but if wrestling is supposed to be fun, this one was fun. Lots of comedy spots here and a good closing stretch. Dustin getting to wrestle so much in front of his home state of Texas is a nice touch and Trent Seven honestly seems like a natural fit in this roster.

Final Thoughts: Tonight’s AEW Rampage delivered a little bit of everything, for everyone, kind of like a buffet. A strong, hard-hitting opening match, an impactful segment with Wardlow to set up a future title shot, and some comedy in the main event made this quite the quick 60 minutes. Hoping that this is a pattern that AEW Rampage can follow going forward. 7/10.
