AEW Rampage: Grand Slam 9/22/23
From the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York! Tony Schiavone, Excalibur, and Ian Riccaboni are on commentary tonight.
Match #1. Christian Cage & Luchasaurus vs. Sting & Darby Allin w/ Nick Wayne
Christian and Nick Wayne stare daggers are each other before the match starts. Brawl to start as Sting introduces Christian into all of the turnbuckles. Darby sends Luchasaurus to the outside with a shotgun dropkick and follows up with a suicide dive on the ramp. Luchasaurus headbutts Darby and then sends him flying off the ramp right into the steel post. Christian and Luchasaurus take turns beating on Darby but Darby returns with a springboard coffin splash. Christian manages to grab a leg as Luchasaurus comes in with a big spinning sidewalk slam. Christian gets the tag and misses a splash off the middle rope. Sting finally gets the tag and he takes care of Christian with a bunch of clotheslines. Spinebuster to Christian as Luchasaurus eats some strikes and a running splash accidentally by Christian. Stinger Splash! Scorpion Death Coffin Drop to Luchasaurus! Shotgun dropkick to Christian. Christian pokes Darby in the eyes behind the referee’s back, but Nick Wayne gets on the apron and distracts Christian, allowing Darby to roll him up for the three count!
Winners: Sting & Darby Allin
Rating: **3/4. Crowd is all over all of these guys and Darby got a big win heading into the TNT Championship match tomorrow night.
Match #2. Mixed Six-Person Tag: Kris Statlander, Orange Cassidy, & Hook vs. Matt Menard, Angelo Parker, & Anna Jay
Hook hiptosses everyone but Anna tags herself in. Running spinning leg lariat in the corner by Anna. We’ve got a five way triple double setplex set up. Parker ducks an Orange Punch as Parker and Menard hit the drop toe hold and assisted elbow drop. Hook with a t-bone to Menard. Parker. Menard. Parker. Anna Jay locks in the QueensFlayer on Cassidy, but Statlander sneaks behind her and hits her with the electric chair facebuster. RedRum to Parker! Menard eats an Orange Punch and this one is over.
Winner: Kris Statlander, Orange Cassidy, & Hook
Rating: **1/4. Fine win for Hook and company here but not much to it.

Tony Schiavone welcomes Don Callis and Takeshita to the ring. Callis ended up with the man he really wanted all along, and that was Sammy Guevara, who joins the ring. Guevara shakes Callis and Takeshita’s hands, and says he used to hate Callis. Callis wasn’t trying to rip apart his family, he was trying to show Guevara he didn’t have one until now. Guevara says Jericho took him for granted, just like all the fans have taken him for granted. Guevara says he’s got a hot wife, a fat paycheck, a beautiful girl, and Jericho is dead to him.
Enter Chris Jericho.
Jericho charges the ring and goes for both guys as Callis hits him from behind. Takeshita is here with a chair and lays into Jericho, before giving it to Guevara to do the same. Both men hold Jericho as Callis grabs the screwdriver, but Kenny Omega is here to make the save! Omega clears the ring with a lead pipe, as Jericho comes to and stares Omega down before he leaves.
Match #3. Ring of Honor World Tag Team Championship Number One Contender’s Fatal Four-way: The Hardys vs. The Kingdom vs. Best Friends vs. The Righteous
Four-way elbow drop Hardy’s and Best Friends off the middle rope, but the hug is broken up. Dutch runs into the Kick of the King before Taven connects with the Flight of the Conqueror to the outside. Best Friends give the people what they want and connect with stereo somersault sentons to the outside. Matt Hardy deletes Taven on the turnbuckles before a double back elbow and a fist drop/somersault senton combo by The Hardys. Soul Food and half-and-half combo to Taven, as Chuck gets the tag. Taven sends Trent to the outside where Bennett takes advantage with the Boston Bayonet on the floor. Quick tags by The Kingdom as Bennett hits an exploder on Trent. Miscommunication as Taven misses a dropkick and takes out Bennett. Tornado DDT by Taven as Vincent and Matt Hardy get the tags. Side Effect by Matt for two. Jaw Breaker by Jeff and a falling neckbreaker by Matt. Two count. Dutch charges but gets Vincent in the corner. Manhattan drop and a double leg drop by Jeff. Basement dropkick and elbow drop by Jeff for two. Jeff runs into a huge Bossman Slam as Taven hits an enziguiri. Side Russian leg sweep by Vincent to Taven. Dutch hits the Bossman Slam on everyone but Trent hits the Sexy Chucky Knee. Pump kick by Taven to Trent. Superkick to Taven by Chuck. Bennett punches Trent in the groin and the Kingdom hit a spike piledriver but Trent breaks up the pin. Twist of Fate by Jeff Hardy and a swanton bomb. Vincent makes the blind tag to Jeff and hits his senton after Jeff and gets the win!
Winners and NEW Number One Contenders: The Righteous
Rating: ***. Non stop action here in the main event with a surprising team getting the win. AEW are seemingly high on The Righteous right now and it’s nice to see a new team with the focus.
After the match, The Kingdom destroy Best Friends with chairs by ringside.

Match #4. AEW Trios Championship: The Acclaimed & Billy Gunn vs. The Dark Order
Caster and Reynolds start. Shoulder block and an arm drag by Caster. Silver and Bowens in now and Silver gets dropped with a few right hands. Double shoulder block and a double scissor elbow drop. Scissor Me, Timbers to Silver but Reynolds pulls him off the apron and Dark Order beats on Acclaimed on the outside. German suplex by Silver to Caster for two. Dark Order isolates Caster and triple-team him in the corner. Running back elbow by Reynolds and a pair of lariats by Uno. Reynolds scissors Caster without consent before clearing the apron. Hot tag to Daddy Ass and everyone eats right hands. Back body drop to Reynolds who eats a huge lariat. Bowens gets the tag but Reynolds rolls him up for two. Four piece chop combo by Bowens. Arrival by Bowens and the Mic Drop by Caster! Silver throws Bowens into the pin to break it up. Running knee to Daddy Ass. Evil Uno has the title and cracks Caster in the face, behind the referees back! Reynolds rolls Caster up but only gets two. Clothesline by Daddy Ass to Uno on the outside but Silver takes him out with a cannonball off the apron. In the ring, enziguiri to Caster, rolling elbow, but Caster blocks the stunner and hits the FameAsser on Reynolds. Daddy Ass wishbones Silver around the ring post while The Acclaimed connect on a double-team pop up flipping powerbomb (?) for the win.
Winners and STILL AEW World Trios Champions: The Acclaimed & Daddy Ass
Rating: **1/2. Nice little trios match here. The Dark Order feel like they’ve been losing in all the big spots here, but The Acclaimed & Daddy ass probably aren’t dropping the titles anytime soon .
Match #5. Skye Blue vs. Julia Hart w/ Brody King
Hart gets a very witch-like entrance, which is pretty cool. Hart pulls Blue in and whispers something in her ear, but Blue responds with some elbows to the face and a snap suplex. Early two count. Blue misses a charge and she lands hard on the middle turnbuckle. Ground and pound by Hart. Running back elbow by Hart as we go to commercial break. Back from break and Blue hits the rising knee strike and rebound kick. Two count. Spider superplex by Hart and a moonsault get two. Double crucifix by both gets two. Hart kicks ouf the knee of Blue and connects with a Northern Lariat. Hartless is locked in and Blue is forced to tap.
Winner: Julia Hart
Rating: *3/4. Fine little match here but it would have been better if 60% of it didn’t take place during a full commercial. Hart has grown as a wrestler and the House of Black is working for her .
Hart locks in Hartless after the bell and Willow makes the save for Blue.

Match #7. Mike Santana vs. Bronson
Bronson was refereed to as “Dirty Bulk” Bronson and that’s amazing. Bronson takes the fight to Santana early but eats a bunch of huge chops. Big boot by Santana and a backward roll into a cutter. Discus lariat by Santana and a suicide dive to the floor. Running cannonball senton in the corner before Santana finishes it with a double underhook into a sitout facebuster.
Winner: Mike Santana
Rating: NR
Ortiz is at the top of the ramp and wants to know if Santana is ready to talk, and Santana walks right by him.
Match #8. Ring of Honor Six-Man Championship: The Mogul Embassy (c) vs. The Hung Bucks
Stereo planchas by the Bucks as Page and Cage trade blows. Double dropkicks by the Bucks. Running boot to Kaun by Page on the apron as the Bucks catch him and Page hits the assisted running shooting star press! Facebuster from the apron by Nick to Cage, moonsault off the apron to Toa, and a outside-in Destroyer by Cage! Elbow drop off the top from Matt. Triple BTE Trigger but Swerve’s music hits and he’s on the ramp. Nana hits the Swerve dance and it’s amazing. Page hits the ramp and confronts Swerve, allowing The Mogul Embassy jump the Bucks. Open the Gates to Matt! Page makes the save. Deadlift superplex by Cage to Nick. Hanging backstabber off the middle rope by Kaun and a diving twisting elbow drop to Matt. Mogul Embassy isolates Matt throughout the break. Toa holds Matt up like a body slam motion over the top rope and knees him to the body. European uppercuts by Cage and a backbreaker. Cage sends Matt to the outside and into the guard rail a bunch before returning him into the ring and getting a two count. Cage now has Matt up on the top rope, looking for a back suplex, but Matt fights him off and decides to dive to the outside to take out the Gates of Agony. Hot tag to Hangman! Big boot to Cage. Hangman flips out of a German suplex and fights his way out of the opposite corner. Double jump lariat to Kaun on the apron and a moonsault to Cage. Two count. Suicide dives by the Bucks but Cage catches Hangman with the Waterwheel Drop! Long two count. Cage has Hangman on his shoulder on the top rope, but Hangman counters into a hurricanrana in mid-air! Bucks are in and it’s a superkick party to everyone. Meltzer Driver to Kaun but Matt’s back is hurt but Hangman can do it! Cage catches a flipping Nick Jackson in mid-air and the Elite get planted with an F5, a Death Valley Driver, and an Air Raid Crash, respectfully. Two counts everywhere. Avalanches in the corner by all of the Mogul Embassy to Hangman. Full Nelson Bomb/powerbomb and splash three way to Hangman gets two. Open the Gates but Matt flips out. Double lariats by the Gates of Agony. Double Buckshot to Toa and Kaun! Deadeye to Cage but he only gets a two. Buckshot is missed but Cage hits a lariat of his own. Drillclaw by Cage is countered into a roll up and Hangman gets the win!
Winners and NEW Ring of Honor World Six-Man Tag Champions: The Hung Bucks
Rating: What a main event! The Hung Bucks will absolutely bring more eyes to Ring of Honor, and this was a huge win here as The Mogul Embassy where great champions. This also does well to further the Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland story. Great stuff.
Final Thoughts: Now THIS is an episode of Rampage. I know Rampage is the C show, but it’s nice to see some big matches and even a title change every once in a while. This show felt special as per Grand Slam, and we had a lot of storyline advancement, not just big name matches. Ian Riccaboni did a great job on commentary and he works well with Tony and Excalibur. The seeds of an Omega/Jericho partnership and the Hung Bucks winning the ROH titles were the big stories here, but nothing on this show as bad and I could for a show like this every week. 8.5/10.
