A fantastic promo, featuring all of the teams in this year’s edition of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, opens up the show.
Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Matchup: Ricochet & Aleister Black vs. Marcel Barthel & Fabian Aichner
Highlights include:
Great pace from Black on Barthel, back and forth off the ropes, nailing his opponent with a running front kick.
Spike buster on Black by Aichner and a big knee to the face of Black by Barthel for a 2 count.
Tiger feint kick and a flying uppercut, followed by a standing shooting press by Ricochet on Barthel. Cool combo there.
Barthel throws Ricochet off the top rope into Aichner who catches his opponent into perfect suplex form, for a delay suplex slam.
Aichner with a double springboard moonsault! Still only a 2 count on Ricochet. Rope to rope! “nXt” chants ring out around FSU after that.
Ricochet even kicks out of a springboard tornado DDT from Aichner.
Hot tag to Black. Springboard double knees on Barthel. Black’s driven shoulder-first into the turnbuckle, then double dropkicked by his opponents. Ricochet runs over to the opposite corner to help even the odds for his partner, doing some high-flying to remove Barthel from the ring.
Aichner almost pins Black, folding him up tight, but Black kicks out. If you blinked, you missed a Black Mass that got his team the win.
Winners: Ricochet & Aleister Black via pinfall in 9 minutes
2 cool points for Ricochet & Black. Their pace in the ring is impressive. They can really go. 1 cool point for the European Union though because their unique moveset and number of near falls against top stars in nXt is a great sign for them. Fans have taken to them and accepted them as an up and coming team, so I’d expect to see them in some real feuds this summer.
Highlights from the double countout between Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic are shown. Earlier this week at the Performance Center, Lee is wrestling some of the trainees when Dijakovic steps in, demanding to restart the fight. The students ask him to leave as Dijakovic jaws at them. They will resume their feud in two weeks’ time.
#2- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Matchup: Forgotten Sons vs. Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch
Highlights include:
Tilt-a-whirl backbreaker by Blake on Lorcan about a minute in. Slap on the back tags employed by Blake & Cutler. Makes it tough for Lorcan to know who he has to worry about.
nXt referees showing some true grit. Lorcan kicks out of a pinfall and his feet land on the referee. Referee no sells it. That’s what we need to see more of.
German suplexes by Burch on Blake & Cutler after a hot tag. Corner clothesline and a step up enziguri combo on Blake. Snappy!
Lorcan’s lower back won’t allow him to help Burch for their double team manoeuvre. He still manages to fly over the top rope and splash Blake. He continues with running European uppercuts on Cutler, but gets stopped after two.
Burch kicks out of a missile dropkick by Blake, even with Cutler holding him steady. Ryker is stunned, shaking his head in disbelief.
Double-team spike DDT by Burch & Lorcan, but Blake breaks up the pinfall attempt on Cutler. Surprised the crowd on that one.
Blake catches Lorcan in mid-air and powerbombs him into Cutler’s knees across the ring. Cutler flies with a stomp on Lorcan for the pinfall victory.
Winners: Forgotten Sons via pinfall in 10 minutes
1 cool point for both teams. Such a fan of Lorcan & Burch. They certainly brought more of their hard-hitting offense tonight and good to see Lorcan dig down deep to get that finishing move in.
Forgotten Sons got a big victory here and going to the Semi-Finals ensures they get their biggest TV match to date in a few weeks. Cutler & Blake are developing some fine tag chemistry and those quick, unseen tags, along with the fact that they are always trying to run in and block pinfalls, indicate a team that is all in on forming a team that can overcome the champs.
As the announcers are discussing the Tag Classic, Velveteen Dream’s music hits. Dream comes out and saunters over to the nXt Announce Table. He’s there just to remind everyone that he’s the nXt North American Champion. Crowd chants “Vel-ve-teen”!
“BROOOO”. Matt Riddle’s music hits and he struts out to the stage to the crowd chanting “Bro”. He came out to say hi and to congratulate Dream on the title victory. He also wants a closer look at the title. Dream holds it closer to him, standing on the announce table.
Riddle wonders what it would look like around his waist. Dream says he’s not Riddle’s bro. The spotlight (lights go to black and the spotlight actually shines on him) shines only on me. His music hits and the camera shifts to the Undisputed Era prepping for their match later tonight.
Io Shirai has a sitdown interview, in the ring, alongside Kairi Sane, addressing her recent conflict with the EST of nXt, Bianca Belair. The announcers remind us that they will wrestle in a #1 Contender’s match next week.
#3- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Matchup: Moustache Mountain vs. Street Profits
Highlights include:
Montez Ford looks just ridiculous, wearing a red winter mask, a crown and sunglasses.
Unique double-team move by Seven and Bate. Bate leaps off the rope, lands his knees briefly on Seven’s shoulders, then rolls off of them to splash Dawkins for a 2 count.
Ford had a pretty good headlock on Seven for a minute, but Seven fought back, which had Ford yelling, seemingly in fear and surprise.
Big European uppercuts, leading into a power suplex by Bate on Dawkins. Standing shooting star press for a 2 count, interrupted by Ford.
Nasty spear by Dawkins on Bate. Might’ve got the win, but Seven breaks the count.
Spinebuster/Frog Splash combo by Street Profits but the mighty Tyler Bate kicks out just in time! That indicates a momentum change. Seven hits Ford with a nasty back suplex on the apron.
Meanwhile, Bate slowly picks up Dawkins into a German suplex!
This leads directly to a torture rack drop by Seven where Bate immediately launches with a stomp. Clumsily executed, but it’s good for the win.
Winners: Moustache Mountain in 9 minutes
1 cool point for both teams, and the ugly finish is mentioned by McGuinness on commentary. Street Profits continue to retain the excitement of the fans towards their personality and intensity. Moustache Mountain impressed more though with their strength and their use of opportunity.
I’m digging the Street Profits these days, but Moustache Mountain can bring it to a different gear, and they’ll be a heavy favourite against the Forgotten Sons, although it’s clear the push is on for Ryker, Cutler & Blake.
Main Event- Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round Matchup: Undisputed Era (Fish/O’Reilly) vs. #DIY
Gargano and Ciampa come out to their separate theme songs, until Ciampa waits on the ramp beside Gargano, telling him to wait. The #DIY theme song hits and the Full Sail fans are loving it.
Highlights include:
Just seeing these 4 guys back in the ring against one another is a highlight.
Fish rolling into the wrong corner, but then driving Gargano into his home corner to tag in O’Reilly. This leads to some diving through the ropes by Gargano on O’Reilly. Hangman neckbreaker by Ciampa back in the ring for a 2 count on O’Reilly.
Cool combo by Undisputed Era. O’Reilly sneaks behind Gargano on the mat. Fish kicks Gargano, and he trips over O’Reilly, who positions himself immediately for a kneebar on Gargano. They get a 2 count out of it.
Two double-underhook takeovers by O’Reilly on Gargano. Incredible wheelbarrow suplex by Fish, with support from O’Reilly for another 2 count.
Jumping, swinging kick by Gargano on Fish, which he did by using O’Reilly as his fulcrum point. He discards O’Reilly afterward with a DDT. Slick combo, but he can’t tag in Ciampa. Fish interferes with that tag.
Moments later, Ciampa’s in, busting up O’Reilly with tackles, a boot to Fish on the apron, and a knee on the back of O’Reilly’s neck.
Tower of London! 1-2- O’Reilly kicks out.
Ciampa deadlifts O’Reilly for not one, but two German suplexes. Gargano flies from the apron to take out Fish on the floor. Ciampa hits a Blue Thunder bomb but still can’t get the victory.
Gargano tags in. He dives between the ropes right into a guillotine submission from O’Reilly. Ciampa with a running knee to force O’Reilly to let go of Gargano, who was starting to lift O’Reilly from the ground.
A pretty stunning back and forth, off the ropes by O’Reilly and Gargano; that brings in Fish and Ciampa.
Top of the turnbuckle. Fish attempts to superplex Ciampa and he shifts it into an Avalanche Michinoku Driver. O’Reilly follows it up with a diving knee. He covers. Ciampa kicks out. Leg lock by O’Reilly immobilizes the champion so Fish can land a diving headbutt. All of that gets broken up by Gargano. Impressive stuff.
The fight spills to the outside briefly where O’Reilly dives off the apron on to Ciampa. Then, we have two DDT’s: through the ropes by Ciampa and over the ropes, springboard by Gargano. Still, O’Reilly won’t quit.
The match ends after Ciampa and Gargano meet in the middle of the ring, with kicks to the head on O’Reilly.
Winner: #DIY via submission in 14 minutes
2 cool points to each team and an additional one for #DIY winning their return match for what was a sensational main event tag team match. Some of the offense here was ridiculous. These guys keep upping the bar the way they do and it almost makes me sick to my stomach how much it takes to win. Certainly makes it difficult to believe when guys are enduring so many knees and kicks to the head, and yet they keep going.
Anyways, the Dusty Classic semi-finals are now set. Who’s your pick to win?
