Ring of Honor TV 7/27/23

From the Prudentia Center in Newark, New Jersey with Ian Riccaboni and Caprice Coleman on commentary tonight.

Match #1. Pure Rules: Eli Isom vs. Josh Woods

Woods grabs a hammer lock and forces Isom into the ropes early for the first rope break. Isom tries to go up and over but Woods kicks out the arm and shifts the focus. Woods tries to pull Isom out of the corner but Isom hooks the ropes and won’t let go, forcing a second rope break. Arm ringer to the mat by Woods. Forearms to the shoulder of Isom now but Isom fires back with some elbows of his own and an enziguiri. Superman forearm in the corner by Isom and a face buster to the knee. Isom looks for a brainbuster but the arm gives out, so he transitions to a swinging back suplex for a one count. Woods looks for Chaos Theory but instead of the German suplex at the end he locks in the straight armbar. Isom gets to the ropes and that’s the third rope break. Big dropkick by Isom who tries to go up and over to the apron but Woods locks in the rear naked choke. Isom has no rope breaks left so Woods drags him in the ring, props him up, and hits the PK. Gorilla lock finishes this one.

Winner: Josh Woods

Rating: **. Showcase for Woods here and that’s fine. Seems like they’re building towards Woods vs. Shibata.

Match #2. Trish Adora vs. Vita VonStarr

VonStarr shakes off the Code of Honor but quickly gets body slammed. Pair of arm ringers by Adora. Adora locks in the Air Raid Crash Stretch but VonStarr easily escapes, as per she’s a former contortionist. VonStarr chokes Adora in the corner with her boot and hits a running back elbow. Snap suplex with a bridge by VonStarr for two. Spider Stretch by VonStarr in the center of the ring, but Adora shifts her weight and connects with a backbreaker. Axe handle by Adora followed by a crossbody, a pump kick, and a senton. Two count. Lariat Tubman gets countered with a Michinoku Driver by VonStarr! Two count. Adora is up and ducks under VonStarr, hits the ropes, and flattens her with the Lariat Tubman!

Winner: Trish Adora

Rating: **. This was a pretty nice little match here, and it’s good to see Vita VonStarr back in the ROH ring.

Match #3. Ring of Honor Six-man Tag Team Championship: Mogul Embassy vs. Iron Savages

Boulder and Cage start as Cage gets bodyslammed. Tag to Jacked Jameson, who hits a clothesline in the corner on Cage and gets a one count. Kick combo ending with a superkick by Cage. Kaun lays in some hard chops. Kitchen sink and a senton for two. Bronson gets the tab and takes out all members of the Embassy in the corner. Bronson heads to the outside as Toa looks for a powerbomb off the apron and can’t get him, until Kaun dropkicks Bronson and Bronson lands HARD on the floor. Gates of Agony slap each other a lot and then crush Bronson in the corner. Two count. Triple team avalanches in the corner by the Mogul Embassy, as Kaun sets Bronson up on the top rope. Kaun drops Bronson across the top rope with a sidewalk slam and now a senton on the apron by Toa. Deadlift superplex from the outside-in by Cage! Two count. Sunet flip by Cage but Bronson sits out and both men are down. Kaun and Boulder get the tag but Boulder clears house. Body slam to Kaun and an airplane spin to Cage. Double flapjack by Boulder to Cage and Kaun. Toa and Boulder square off. Throat thrust by Toa and a right hand from Boulder, with both men trading blows here. Flying shoulder block by Boulder and a huge powerslam! Two count. Moonsault by Boulder but he misses and Toa runs Boulder over. Clothesline by Jameson to Toa off the top but Cage is here with a spinning F5. Choke bomb by Bronson to Cage but Kaun breaks up the pin. Kaun with a big Air Raid Crash on Bronson. Spinebuster by Jameson to Kaun. Belly to belly by Toa. Boulder tries a cross body but Toa doesn’t budge! Bronson eats a discus lariat by Cage and Jameson gets an overhead belly-to-belly. Kaun is legal and The Pedigree finishes this one.

Winners and STILL ROH World Six-man Champions: The Mogul Embassy

Rating: ***1/2. Big ol’ hoss fight here with a bunch of dudes just throwing weight at each other. Really entertaining stuff and The Mogul Embassy should hold those titles for a long time.

Match #4. Leyla Hirsch vs. B3cca

Hirsch catches a kick and stomps the knee. Clothesline and a gutwrench suplex from Hirsch. Clotheslines in the corner by Hirsch and a vertical suplex. B3cca elbows her way out of a waist lock and hits a shotgun dropkick and a running back elbow in the corner. Hirsch eats a running pump kick in the face! B3cca goes up top and Hirsch evades a missile dropkick. German suplex by Hirsch and a running knee to the face.

Winner: Leyla Hirsch

Rating: *1/2. B3cca got enough offense in to not make it a total squash, and the north east crowd was here for her. Seems like Hirsch is following a Samoa Joe-like trajectory.

Match #5. The Renegades vs. Tiara James & JC

Mat return by Charlotte but JC returns the favor with a snap suplex. Robyn eats a forearm on the apron and James lays in some chops. JC hits the ropes and Robyn trips her up from the outside. Double stalling vertical suplex by The Renegades and a pair of chops. JC flips out of another suplex attempt and hits some clotheslines on both Renegades. Bulldog to Robyn but she takes too long, and The Renegades hit a double superkick to JC and the Hart Attack to James for the win.

Winners: The Renegades

Rating: NR

Match #6. ROH Women’s Championship Proving Ground Match: Athena (c) vs. Christina Marie

Marie attacks early and connects with a rolling neck snap. One count. Marie charges but Athena just shrugs her off and into the ropes, almost like a pounce. Athena tries to pull Marie’s head off over the top rope before hitting vicious elbows to the back from the apron and a kick to the face. Knockout elbow and this one is over.

Winner: Athena

Match #7. The Kingdom vs. Rhett Titus & Tracy Williams

Titus and Taven quickly in now as Titus hits an inverted airplane spin into a sit-out back suplex. Titus drops Bennett with an elbow but Taven takes advantage of the distraction. Slingshot into an enziguiri and a springboard elbow from Taven. Titus now in the wrong corner here as The Kingdom are making quick tags. Williams gets the tag and lights everyone out with overhand chops. Tear drop suplex to Bennett. Williams goes up top but Taven catches him with an enziguiri and follows him up. Double arm DDT on the top turnbuckle! Death Valley Driver into a knee breaker before locking in the high-angle Cloverleaf! Belly-to-belly by Titus to Bennett. Yakuza Kick by Titus to Taven and a huge lariat from Williams! One, two, no! Williams and Bennett trade strikes in the center of the ring. Uranage by Bennett to Titus and the London Dungeon, but Williams at the same time locks in the single leg crab. Williams and Bennett continue to strike each other while the submissions are locked in, but eventually break. Williams and Bennett with stereo jumping piledrivers before continuing to strike each other. Lariat by Williams but it only gets two. Dropkick by Titus to Taven and Taven is out. Titus wants the belly-to-belly by Bennett saves Taven. Bennett in now with the Spiccoli Driver and it’s Just the Tip by Taven. Proton Pack finishes this one.

Winners: The Kingdom

Rating ***3/4. I’m overrating this because of the love I have for all four wrestlers in this match, but this ruled so hard. We know how great The Kingdom is, but Hot Sauce & Rhett Titus are a great team. Great tag team wrestling here.

There’s an eliminator tournament for the ROH TV title coming up and it starts now.

Match #8. JD Drake vs. Christopher Daniels

Daniels evades a bunch of chops by Drake and hits an arm drag. Daniels catches Drake with a dropkick off the ropes and works on the back of the head with some elbows. Body block and a body slam by Drake. Senton by Drake gets a one count. Drake drops Daniels with a big chop. Snap mare and a chin lock by Drake. Old school, baby. Roll up by Daniels gets two. Daniels charges and the Bossman Slam by Drake gets a long two count. Another senton from Drake. Make that three. Daniels gets dropped with another chop and gets mad at himself and fires up, exchanging chops with Drake in the process. Complete Shot by Daniels out of nowhere and both men are down. Forearm by Daniels. Two. Daniels goes low with a kick to the knee and a clothesline to the back of the neck. Diving Complete Shot off the second rope by Daniels gets two. Drake cuts Daniels off and looks for the moonsault. Drake misses the moonsault and gets planted with a uranage. Daniels goes up top… Best. Moonsault. Ever! This one’s over.

Winner: Christopher Daniels

Rating: **1/2. Nice clean pro wrestling match here. Drake is an under the radar stellar hand, and Daniels can still go at a deliberate place, so this was perfect.

Match #9. Big Bill & Lee Moriarty vs. Gabriel Hodder & Adrian Soriano

Moriarty looks for the Border City Stretch early on Soriano but he gets to the ropes. Shoulder block by Moriarty and a sweeping kick to the face. Soriano fights back with some elbow and tags in Hodder, who eats a dropkick. Mounted punches by Moriarty but Hodder returns a short-arm clothesline and a pair of splashes in the corner .Hodder and Soriano mug to the camera but Moriarty tags in Bill behind their back. Bill clotheslines everyone and splashes them in the corner. Big boot to Hodder and a Bossman Slam to Soriano. Chokeslam to Soriano as Moriarty takes out Hodder on the floor and this one is over.

Winners: Big Bill & Lee Moriarty

Rating: NR. However, Big Bill and Lee Moriarty are just awesome together.

The next three matches are part of the ROH World TV Championship eliminator tournament.

Match #10. Tony Nese w/ Smart Mark Sterling & Ari Daivari vs. Cheeseburger

Nese lays in some strikes in the corner after berating the entire arena. CB goes up and over Nese and locks in the La Escalara (sp?) before popping the shoulder. Arm ringer by CB who tries to send Nese to the other corner but Nese holds on. CB instead goes up top and eats an uppercut and a running boot to the stomach. Fireman’s carry into a stomach breaker by Nese. Two. Nese locks CB in the Tree of Woe and does bicycle crunches in the corner. Body scissors by Nese but CB reverse to full guard and lays in some ground and pound. Crowd is firmly behind Cheeseburger, who reverses a suplex into one of his own. Running elbow in the corner by Cheeseburger and a bulldog. Superkick by Cheeseburger! Palm strike to Nese but he’s out at two. Cheeseburger locks in the Hoverboard Lock by but Nese escapes, only to be planted with a DDT. Two count. Smart Mark Sterling distracts Cheeseburger from the apron, allowing Nese to finish Cheeseburger with the pumphandle driver.

Winner: Tony Nese

Rating: **1/2. More competitive than I thought it would be, but a solid little match here with the crowd’s love for Cheeseburger really adding to it.

Match #11. Anthony Henry vs. Gravity

Henry grounds Gravity early, using wrist control and arm ringers. Gravity tries to bounce up off the ground a bunch and Henry just walks away. Gravity cartwheels out of a wrist lock and taunts but eats a huge boot. Henry runs into a boot and Gravity hits a big running Undertaker-type dive over the top rope. Henry back suplexes Gravity on the apron and twists the neck with his feet. Gravity fights back with chops but gets caught with a Spiccoli Driver for a long two. Another neck twist by Henry. Henry punts Gravity in the back and looks for a German suplex, but Gravity elbows out. Handspring back elbow by Gravity. Military press into a dropkick to the face (?) by Gravity. Gravity rolls Henry through into a seated octopus hold, but Henry transitions into a Stretch Muffler. Gravity rolls Henry up for two but eats a PK. Cross-legged Michinoku Driver by Henry for a long two. Henry goes up top and misses the diving double stomp, but just absolutely flattens Gravity with a clubbing left hand and connects with a Stormbreaker like move for two. Gravity ducks a high kick and fires some elbows in… only to eat a high kick and an enziguiri. Spinning knee by Gravity and a twisting powerslam. No-arm splash off the top from Gravity and that’ll do it.

Winner: Gravity

Rating: ***. Anthony Henry carried this match, and that why it was great. Gravity seems like he’s got a lot of potential, but he’s going to draw tough comparisons from his brother Bandido at this stage.

Match #12. Shane Taylor vs. Serpentico

Serpentico uses his speed early but Taylor traps an arm, only to get head scissored into the corner. Enziguiri by Serpentico but Taylor shoves him off and knocks him out with a right hand. Taylor biels Serpentico from both corners before standing on his face. Running splash in the corner and a lariat from Taylor only gets two. Taylor runs into a boot but Serpentico walks into a huge left hand to the body that drops him. World’s Strongest Slam by Taylor gets two. Serpentico calls a time out and then gives Taylor the finger before firing a superkick. Enziguiri by Serpentico before coming off the top, only to be caught in Taylor’s arms, dropped, and headbutt. Arm trap uranage and the big splash finishs it.

Winner: Shane Taylor

Rating: *3/4. Just enough offense to make it competitive, but Taylor is on fire.

Final Thoughts: Consistent episode of Ring of Honor here. Nothing awful, some pretty good matches, and some movement in the ROH TV Championship division. Still can’t help but feel like ROH gets whatever scraps are left, booking-wise, from Dynamite and Collision, but that’s business. At the end of the day, the talent is here in Ring of Honor (Big Bill & Lee Moriarty, Workhorsemen, Shane Taylor, Mogul Embassy, Kingdom, LFI, etc), but they just need to feel important. 6.5/10.
