Opening Segment: War Raiders Prepare for Takeover: New York
War Raiders take on two local talent who go unnamed on the broadcast.
Rowe and Hanson demolish their competition. Those guys don’t get one flick of offense in. For the finish, Rowe chucked the guy in blue trunks into the air where Hanson caught him for a power slam.
Winners: War Raiders via pinfall in 2 minutes
Post-match, Rowe gets on the mic and says nXt General Manager William Regal gave them permission to send a message to Ricochet and Aleister Black. Hanson says you don’t have to listen, just watch. Rowe calls for…the NEXT TEAM.
War Raiders vs. Cezar Bononi & Adrian Jaoude
Highlights include:
Bononi strikes first. Hanson cartwheels away and then clotheslines Bononi hard to the mat. Tag to Rowe for a nasty knee to the grill of Jaoude. Rowe powerslams Hanson on to Bononi for a senton slam.
Rowe hits them with a combination powerslam/powerbomb. Hanson goes to the top rope. Rowe holds Bononi parallel to the ground for Hanson to come down with a guillotine leg drop.
Winners: War Raiders via pinfall in 2 minutes
If you watch the show, listen to the background sounds while Mauro Ranallo talks at the nXt announce booth following this match. All you can hear are Hanson and Rowe shouting and growling. Pretty funny.
1 cool point for the nXt Tag Team Champions. Love the intimidation factor here. That’s a creative way to send a message to your opponents, emphasizing just how much destruction Hanson and Rowe can do to a team. The strength and creativity of their double team manoeuvres simply cannot be outdone.
That said, Ricochet and Aleister Black have loads of stamina, so expect a lengthy match that could challenge for Match of the Night on Friday.
We watch a preview for the Takeover: New York nXt UK Championship match between Pete Dunne (c) and Walter.
Pretty cool promo for the WWE Performance Center is shown as well.
Billie Eilish’s song “you should see me in a crown” is one of the official Takeover: New York theme songs.
Segment #2: Candice LeRae Wants a Title Shot
Outside FSU, nXt cameras catch up with Candice LeRae. She’s asked about her husband, Johnny Gargano’s big opportunity Friday night. She’s excited for it, but she’s also going to be watching… Aliyah and Vanessa Borne walk up behind her and interrupt. Aliyah says LeRae will be a failure and so will her husband. Borne says LeRae wasn’t created to be nXt Women’s Champion. The Vision declares you a lower.
LeRae says you two know a lot about being a failure. She will earn her nXt title opportunity by knocking Aliyah on her ass.
The reporter asks them about what LeRae just said. Aliyah says she’s going to throw a hissy fit, and they walk away.
Oney Lorcan w. Danny Burch vs. Jaxson Ryker w. Forgotten Sons
Ranallo reminds us that Oney Lorcan has debuted on 205 Live.
Highlights include:
Ryker hangs Lorcan out to dry, throwing gut-first on to the ropes. This prompts a standoff between the men on the outside, but no punches are thrown.
Ryker punishes Lorcan, seating him on the top rope and clubbing him repeatedly on the back.
Gutbuster for a 2 count.
Lorcan’s abdomen continues to be the focus for Ryker. Sunset flip attempt by Lorcan is stopped, and Ryker squeezes Lorcan in a bearhug, lifting him right off the ground.
Burch urgently implores Lorcan to fight out of this submission attempt. Ryker’s got it locked in for over a minute until Lorcan brings the chops to the chest. Running European uppercuts! A flurry of running attacks by Lorcan culminate in a sit down powerbomb by Ryker. 1-2-3.
Winner: Jaxson Ryker via pinfall in 5.5 minutes
1 cool point for Ryker who was fairly dominant in this match. Surprising to see that since Lorcan is usually so good at keeping things even. Such was not the case tonight and he was mostly overwhelmed by Ryker’s mid-section attack. Keeps he and the Forgotten Sons looking strong, following their success in the Dusty Classic.
Segment #3: Takeover: New York Previews
A preview for the Takeover: New York nXt Championship match between Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole is shown. It’s 2 out of 3 falls, and it will decide who will hold the vacant title, following Tommaso Ciampa’s stepping down due to injury.
Gargano says Cole may be hungry, but he’s starving.
Cole says Gargano hasn’t earned the title of “Johnny TakeOver”.
Clips of Cole preparing at the Performance Center with the help of his Undisputed Era brothers are shown. Clips of Gargano going back home to Cleveland to train are shown.
Another official theme song for Takeover: New York is “Are You Ready” by Disturbed.
A preview for the Takeover: New York nXt North American Championship match between Velveteen Dream (c) and Matt Riddle is shown.
We are reminded of the feud between Keith Lee and Dominik Dijakovic, with highlights shown from their match over a month ago. That one ended in a double countout. (They’ve been talking about a match between these two consistently, but have yet to make it happen on nXt TV.)
nXt reporters chatted with Keith Lee earlier today. Lee showed up looking for a conclusion. They were bumped from the event. Lee says he IS an event. He understands he’s not a chosen one, but he was first in line at GM Regal’s office today. Their match will happen in two weeks.
In two weeks, Dijakovic will bask in Lee’s glory.
Main Event: Bianca Belair vs. Kairi Sane
Highlights include:
Sane taunts Belair by pretending to twirl around a big braid. She follows this up with an interceptor and a sliding D to push Belair to the outside. Then, it’s a flying Kabuki elbow from the apron! Plenty of momentum on her side, as she rolls Belair into the ring for a 2 count.
Cross-legged crab! Sane pulls back pretty far on Belair. This seems to push Belair to another level, which she uses to respond to Sane’s offense.
Abdominal stretch and clubs to the exposed side of Sane by Belair. Pendulum backbreaker for a 2 count.
Suplex and kip up by Belair. Cocky cover, saying “ahoy” and stepping on Sane for a 2 count. Sane breaks it easily and is up on her feet.
Sane goes for the octopus stretch. Nothing doing.
Belair catches Sane flying from the top rope and hits her with a fallaway slam. She goes for a jumping frog splash, but Sane lifts her knees.
Belair goes for the vertical suplex, but it’s reversed for a spike DDT by Sane. Dragon screw leg whip! Axe kick and then a rolling neck snap x2 on Belair. Sliding D!
The Final Flurry
Sane mounts the top rope…flying Kabuki elbow! 1-2- Belair gets a shoulder up to break the count.
Spinning back elbow knocks Belair to the mat. Sane climbs the turnbuckle. Belair meets her there and puts her in position for a superplex. She connects, but stays seated on the turnbuckle! Wow!
Standing moonsault for a 2 count. Another cover for a 2 count. Yet another pinfall attempt…Sane’s up.
Belair’s prevented from further success by Shayna Baszler! It’s her, Shafir and Duke beating up on Belair and Sane. Match is thrown.
Winner: No Contest in 12 minutes
Io Shirai runs down the ramp to even the sides and help out her tag partner, Sane.
A skirmish ensues with nXt referees getting involved to break things up. To add to the chaos, the entire nXt Women’s roster runs down to the ring to get in on the brawl.
Belair throws Lacey Lane on to the women at the ramp. Shirai surprises Belair with an uppercut. She climbs the turnbuckle and flies on to the group below with a moonsault.
Fans are quite appreciative as they see Shirai spot the Women’s Championship. Shirai claims it, holds it high and then against her chest as her music plays.
1 cool point for Sane, mostly because of that moment of mocking Belair, but also because she wrestles such a fun style. Plenty of energy and a interesting mix of strikes and high-flying attacks.
1 cool point for Belair’s strength. She gave a seated Superplex to Sane, something I don’t remember seeing before. Shirai got the best of her to close the show, but if we consider the usual go-home shows on the main roster, that doesn’t translate into a title win.
Even though Baszler and company ruined this match, they were overwhelmed by the women’s roster, to the point that they weren’t even visible at the end of the show. Surely that will feed the fire and provoke a heightened desire in the champion to put people to sleep Friday night.
