As noted, GCW announced on Tuesday that AEW star Jeff Hardy will make his debut appearance for the company on Friday, August 4 at the “My Name Is” event in Detroit, Michigan, which will air live on FITE from Harpo’s Concert Theatre. The event is being held during WWE SummerSlam Week in Detroit.
The announcement from GCW was seen as a big one as many believed Hardy would be wrestling a match that night. However, GCW later posted a follow-up to announce that Hardy will not be wrestling.
“Note: Jeff will be appearing in person on the show but he is not wrestling,” GCW later wrote, which didn’t go over well with many fans.
GCW is now billing this as a “special appearance” by Hardy, but no other details were provided.
Hardy will also perform one of his concerts as soon as the GCW event is over, at the same venue. The Eventbrite page notes that Hardy will perform his original music and share stories with fans. The concert, presented by WrestleCon and GCW, is scheduled to run from 11:15pm until midnight. A separate ticket is required for the concert, and those can be purchased here. Concert tickets are priced at $30 for single admission or $50 for double admission, which is a discount of $5 per person. The GCW event has just a few General Admission (Standing Room Only) tickets left, priced at $35.
Matt Hardy discussed Jeff’s future on the indies during a June episode of his “Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” podcast.
“Jeff is just so nice of a guy where it is hard for him to say no [to autograph requests], you know, because he is very much a people pleaser and I think part of his journey to sobriety over the last year, he has probably learned a lot and he has put his foot down some in terms of being a people pleaser, much like he doesn’t wrestle on the indie scene right now. He’s open to doing signings and cons and stuff like that, but he only wants to do two a month. He’s really put his foot down with that, and I respect that, and I’m cool with that,” Matt said.
Jeff has wrestled just four matches since returning to action in May. He teamed with brother Matt and FTW Champion Hook for a win over The Gunns and Ethan Page at AEW Double Or Nothing on May 28. The same trio worked non-televised AEW House Rules live events on June 2 and June 3, defeating Juice Robinson, Kyle Fletcher, and Preston Vance the first night, then defeating Page, Vance, and Big Bill the next night. Jeff has not wrestled since The Gunns defeated The Hardys on the June 21 Dynamite.
AEW is currently at the end of a TV tapings tour of Canada, and it was reported that Jeff would be off AEW programming for a few weeks as he is unable to enter the country due to his criminal record. Matt blamed Jeff’s absence on a broken jaw suffered during the June 21 loss to The Gunns.
