Opening Segment: Breezango vs. Matt Martel & Chase Parker
Highlights include:
Fandango getting praise from Ranallo for returning from injury after a year away. It’s he and Martel to start this one.
Tag from Parker. Goes for a sunset flip attempt. Fandango tries to keep his balance, gyrates the hips and lands a leg drop on Parker. Tag to Breeze.
Beauty snap suplex but just a 1 count. Flying forearm leads to Breeze lying on the top ropes, taunting Parker who asks if Breeze thinks he’s funny.
Martel’s back in and he gets taken down with a dropkick/arm drag combo.
Big knee strike and a series of punches by Parker but the cover attempt comes late, and Breeze brings the shoulders up. Breeze is whipped into the corner where he forearms Martel on the apron. Step up enziguri and Breeze crawls towards his corner. Parker holds his leg and prevents the tag.
Still reaching, Breeze tags Fandango who brings the chops to Parker. Whip off the ropes. Powerslam! Another for Martel. Falcon Arrow!
Breeze is in. Catapult into Fandango’s forearm and that leads to the Fashion Faux-Pas (Fandango slingshots over the top rope for an elbow on his opponent, who was lying on Breeze’s knees). 1-2-3.
Winner: Breezango via pinfall
1 cool point for Breezango’s second win in a row. Great double team work at the end there. Martel & Parker showed themselves capable enough in the ring, but the fans were behind Breezango all the way.
Earlier today, Cathy Kelley asks Jordan Myles about his match. He is accompanied by Keith Lee. Myles says he’s nervous, but this is the opportunity of a lifetime. When the music hits, the confidence will be there.
Lee says he should have all the confidence in the world. Let’s go!
While McGuinness is promoting the next match, cameras cut to Io Shirai slamming a kendo stick into Candice LeRae in the parking lot.
Earlier today, Cameron Grimes is audibly and visibly upset about losing the Breakout Tournament. He says he wanted that title shot, but now he’s back at the very bottom. His goal is to be the champion. He repeats himself and then puts on a stylized top hat before walking away.
Second Segment: Velveteen Dream (NAc) vs. Kona Reeves
This is a non-title match.
Highlights include:
Reeves avoids a slap from Dream and does a little taunting at Dream. They tie up in the corner. Dream with the double slap to Reeves’ chest as Reeves slowly backed up. Quick pace running the ropes. Leapfrogs from Reeves until a dropkick from Dream sends him reeling.
Dream misses the superkick and Reeves kicks him back. Right hands knock Dream to the mat. Strong front kick to the chest of Dream and the pace is slowed down.
Reeves asks Dream to look at him as he grabs Dream by the hand. Huge right hands from both men. Off the ropes, Dream clobbers Reeves who pops right back up. Irish whip to the corner, reversed by Dream who comes off the top rope with a double axe handle.
From the apron, shoulder thrust and sunset flip by Dream. Reeves stays put and tries to use the ropes to sit on Dream for the pin. Referee sees it and calls him out on it.
Superkicks from Dream. Dream Valley Driver! 1-2-3.
Winner: Velveteen Dream via pinfall
Post-match, Roderick Strong can be seen on the big screen. He’s outside somewhere and he reminds Dream of what he said to him, about being ready for a one-on-one experience. Strong asks if he’s ready for the same. The camera pans out and Dream’s couch is ablaze.
*NOTE: Dream vs. Strong for the North American Championship will happen on September 18th, the night nXt goes live on the USA Network.*
1 cool point for Dream who wrestled his first TV match since April 17. Didn’t even need the Purple Rainmaker to win this one.
1 cool point for Reeves because he got plenty of time to show his arrogance, talking and insulting Dream throughout the match. I like that attitude in the ring, but he was pretty foolish to cheat for a win. Jessika Carr is a very consistent referee and she rarely misses stuff like that.
A recap of Rhea Ripley’s arrival to Full Sail is shown. She will wrestle Shayna Baszler next week!
Third Segment: Bianca Belair vs. Taynara Conti
Highlights include:
Belair shows off her muscle by forcing Conti into one turnbuckle, then the opposite one. Conti with a monkey flip for a 1 count. Belair picks up Conti after her armbar attempt, but Conti slips down for a pinning attempt. 1 count.
Belair connects with the running shoulder tackle for a 2 count. She whips Conti. No. Reversal. Belair shows off her tumbling. Cartwheel. Backflip off the turnbuckle into a dropkick on Conti.
Conti with a drop toehold on Belair into the turnbuckle. She rakes Belair’s face along the bottom rope as the referee counts to 4. Kick to the hands of Belair and a pinfall attempt in the middle of the ring for 2.
The announcers talk up Conti showing more of an edge tonight. Phoenix says she needs to do this to compete with the other women in the division.
Bicycle kick by Conti, following a pinfall attempt by Belair. 1-2- kickout.
Double knees to Belair. Another knee strike. Up to the top rope, Conti with an armbar in the ropes. Belair falls to the outside, possibly hurting her shoulder. Nope. Belair catches Conti off the apron. Fallaway slam!
The referee begins his count and gets to 9 before the ladies return to the ring. Belair’s on a mad streak, unloading on Conti with punches and kicks. Handspring moonsault!
Belair kips up and calls for Conti to get up! Forearm smash to Conti. Torture rack position. K.O.D. 1-2-3.
Winner: Bianca Belair via pinfall
1 cool point for Belair who is in great spirits following that win. That’s 3 in a row for her. She matched Conti’s aggressiveness and then some. She’s done well in becoming a full-fledged face. Crowd loves her. She’s growing into a top star.
Next week, Johnny Gargano addresses his future in nXt.
nXt General Manager William Regal is in his office and he announces a #1 Contender’s Triple Threat match for September 19th. The contestants will be: Mia Yim, Bianca Belair and Io Shirai.
Important to note that all 3 of those ladies have had title matches against Baszler, so one of those feuds will get a new chapter, unless someone else gets added like Ripley or LeRae.
Main Event: Adam Cole (c) vs. Jordan Myles for the nXt Championship
Highlights include:
Cole muscles in a side headlock on Myles a few times when Myles tries to catch Cole off guard during two separate throws to the ropes or corner.
Finally, Myles is able to catch Cole off the ropes with an armlock. A few moments later, Myles dropkicks Cole to the outside. From the apron, he misses a kick and gets tripped face-first to the outside by Cole.
Myles is smashed into the ringpost! Cole grabs Myles and rolls him into the ring. Throw to the corner. Myles gets caught in the ropes and falls to the mat.
Cole reverses the Irish whip and Myles suffers a mild case of whiplash after that one.
Head scissors applied by Cole. Fans exchange opposing chants for Myles and Cole. Myles finally drags himself to a rope break.
Cole says Myles doesn’t deserve to be in the same ring as him. Quite condescending words from Cole and he calls out Myles to give his best.
Punches exchanged. Myles flies over the top rope with the Thunder Dolphin on Cole. He rolls Cole in. Up to the top rope…diving crossbody! 1-2- kickout!
Myles evades a dropkick and tries to deadlift Cole…yes! Everest German suplex! 1-2- kickout.
Cole rolls to the outside, then back in as Myles turns for the side ropes. Yakuza kick from Cole! 1-2- kickout by Myles. Beauty move there, catching Myles with his back turned to him.
Step up enziguri/backstabber combo for another 2 count for Cole. Ranallo talks up the grit being shown by Myles.
Myles attempts to use the turnbuckle to spring up, but Cole kicks his legs out from under him. He applies a Figure Four leg lock to “woos” from the crowd. Cole’s got it locked in well and holds it over 30 seconds until Myles can get the rope break.
Myles and Cole on the top turnbuckle, jockeying for position. Cole tries to superplex Myles. He’s pushed to the mat. Myles flies off the top turnbuckle directly into Cole’s kick. Ushigoroshi! 1-2- Myles kicks out again.
Fans get behind Myles as Cole wonders what he has to do to win. Myles hits a beauty of a penalty kick on Cole from the apron. He rolls Cole in. Cole rolls out again. Myles launches himself like a missile through the ropes, slamming Cole to the outside. Quick roll-in.
Myles flies from the top turnbuckle with a huge Frog splash! 1-2- no. Cole’s still in this. Myles returns to the top turnbuckle. Rolls through a 450 splash. SUPERKICK! Back up to the top. Midnight Star…NO! Cole’s knees are there to meet him and Myles lays stunned on the mat.
Cole removes the kneepad. Misses the Last Shot. O’Connor roll by Myles for a 2 count.
Cole hits Myles with a superkick and a Last Shot. This one’s all over.
Winner, and still nXt Champion: Adam Cole via pinfall
Easy to give 2 cool points to Myles for his showing tonight. Very competitive with Cole. Left it all out there and the Full Sail fans noticed. He gets sent off to “Jordan” chants as the show ends.
2 cool points to Cole. I liked the start where he was one step ahead of Myles, stopping his momentum off the ropes to hit Myles. Cole showed off his repertoire and excelled with a combination of striking, submission tactics and agility.
In 2 weeks, nXt will be moving to a 2 hour LIVE show, broadcast on the USA Network.
That will mark the end of my result/recap work, which I have been doing since September 2015. 4 years is a good run and, as I reflect on the timing of this decision, I’m content to give it up and take on a new project.
So… for those who have enjoyed the Cool Points, I will continue writing about nXt in a weekly column format. Less match description, more feud analysis and a fresh, sports-journalist approach, which will recap basic statistics of wrestlers and storylines.
The format should make it easier for folks who don’t have time to watch the show to follow the product, and, hopefully, it will provide nXt fans with an enjoyable way to reflect on and discuss the BEST brand in WWE today.
