AEW Collision 8/3/24
From the ESports Stadium in Arlington, Texas! Excalibur,
Here’s The Patriarchy. Sit down and shut up while Christian conducts his business, so he can quickly get out of this hellhole. Four weeks ago, The Patriarchy did exactly what they said they would do when they became new trios champions. A gift from Christian to his family, if you will. A belt holds up your pants, or to discipline a naughty child… what you see are titles. Christian then bestows his title to Nick Wayne, who deserves the name… Prodigy. Killswitch is the finisher, but… he did not give birth to The Prodigy, so Christian gives Mama Wayne the title. Killswitch puts his hand on Christian’s shoulder, but here comes The House of Black!
Well well well, it’s Malakai Black and Jelly Roll. Yikes. Christian says the House of Black is no longer a trio, so they can’t be the number one contender. Malakai hasn’t lived up to his hype, so maybe he came out here looking for some fatherly advice from Christian. Three on two… Christian wants to know what the hell they were thinking.
“This!”
Lights go out and Buddy Matthews is back. The Patriarchy quickly scramble, but…
Here’s The Bang Bang Gang.
Christian leaves Nick Wayne to his own devices and he get high kicked by Black, a pop-up knee by Matthews, and a cannonball combo by Brody. House of Black and Bang Bang Gang discus logistics in the ring as The Patriarchy skedaddle.
Match #1. The Premier Athletes w/ Mark Sterling vs. Hologram & Mistico
Hurricanrana by Hologram and a dropkick to Daivari. Mistico tags himself in and almost a Silly String-like move to Nese. Double jump arm drag and tieres and an assisted double dropkick to the Premier Athletes. Double dive fake out and Mark Sterling wants a time out. Double back elbow by Mistico and an inside-out tieres to Nese. Rope walk arm drag to Daivari. Hologram gets the tag and delivers two spinning back kicks and a hammerlock into a sit-out facebuster. Nese makes a blind tag and ducks underneath Hologram, holds the arm, and turns a pumphandle into a sit-out tombstone. Foot sweep to Daivari but Sterling distracts Hologram. Hologram with a suicide dive to Sterling but he runs into a superkick from Nese. Missile dropkick from Mistico. Assisted tornillo by Mistico to the outside. Rope walk somersault plancha by Hologram! 450 splash to Daivari and that’ll do it.
Winners: Hologram & Mistico
Rating: **3/4. Nice match to get the crowd going, as they seem to love Hologram and Mistico. Premier Athletes were the perfect foil here and Nese’s finisher actually got the loudest reaction of the match.
Mariah May has joined the commentary table. “Can I speak now, bitch?” She asks Tony.
Match #2. Toni Storm vs. ???
Storm’s music hits and she makes a b-line for the commentary table. Storm and May brawl as Christopher Daniels intervenes and tries to bring May to the back, but Storm dives off the entrance and the brawl continues! Storm’s opponent attacks Storm from behind and rolls her in the ring. Chanel I believe is her name, with a pump kick. Toni ducks a clothesline and German suplexes Chanel into the corner. Running hip attack! May is watching from the ramp as Storm hits Storm Zero.
Winner: Toni Storm
Rating: NR
Match #3. Kyle Fletcher vs. Brian Cage
Don Callis has joined the commentary table. Running back elbow by Cage but Fletcher responds with a running knee to the face that sends Cage to the floor, before following up with a suicide dive. Cage looks for a suplex but Fletcher flips out the back and gets a running start with a cannonball down the ramp. Back in the ring and Fletcher runs into a huge boot to the face, allowing Cage to follow up with a Death Valley Driver. Release German suplex by Cage as we go to commercial. Back from commercial and Cage has Fletcher on the top rope as he tries a spinning powerslam and HOLY S that was a horrible landing. Two count. Cage thinks about the DrillClaw but Fletcher rolls him up for a two count. Fletcher ducks a pair of clotheslines and tombstones Cage for the win!
Winner: Kyle Fletcher
Rating: **1/2. This was an eight-minute match that featured a commercial break in the middle of it, but what we saw was awesome. There’s no reason this match shouldn’t have had another 5-7 minutes.
After the match, Fletcher says if he drops MJF on his neck like he just did Cage, maybe he won’t get up. Maybe Max puts the title on the line so he can go to Wembley and face his best friend, Will Ospreay. MJF shows up on the tron and says that Fletcher is a typical foreigner, trying to steal things from hardworking Americans. Kyle isn’t an American hero, but MJF is, and he’s going to give Fletcher the gift of a lifetime… an eliminator match this Wednesday on Dynamite. If Fletcher wins, he gets a title shot the following week.
A video package of Bryan Danielson is shown. Yuta says Danielson is in the most violent mindset of his career, and he’s putting his life on the line at Wembley.
Renee is with Jeff Jarrett and company, but Lethal says that if it wasn’t for Hangman than Jarrett would have gotten the title match at Grand Slam. Jarrett says he couldn’t be happier to get Danielson ready for Swerve. Jarrett says there are no rules this Wednesday, and he wans to take it back to the Memphis, days.
Match #4. Triple Threat: Claudio Castagnoli vs. Tomohiro Ishii vs. Lee Moriarty w/ Shane Taylor
Moriarty tries to put the boots to everyone but he runs into a double shoulder block. Ishii and Claudio shoulder block each other and nobody moves. Moriarty sneaks in and locks in a kravat but Claudio breaks it up and back suplexes Ishii. Moriarty with a back take and a cradle for two, before dropkicking Claudio outside the ring and following up with a suicide dive to both Claudio and Ishii. Claudio sends everyone into the guardrail and it’s now a chop fest in the middle of the ring, as Moriarty finds himself on the receiving end of some hard chops, staggers, and fights back with some of his own. Now all three guys are just throwing heavy leather at each other but Moriarty back suplexes Ishii. Then a German suplex. Then a back suplex for Claudio. Ishii elbows everyone but Claudio wipes them both out with a lariat. Lariat by Ishii to Claudio, Moriarty dumps him to the outside, and covers for two. Claudio is up and it’s the Giant Swing to Moriarty! Crowd loves this one. Ishii pulls Claudio outside and tries a sliding lariat but Moriarty cradles him for two. Moriarty up and runs into a lariat and Claudio breaks up the pin at two. European uppercuts by Claudio for two but Moriarty sneaks in with cradles for everyone. Border City Stretch on Ishii but Ishii isn’t going to tap, so he rolls him up for two. European by Claudio to Moriarty. Ishii tries a brainbuster on Claudio but Moriarty sunset flips him and he suplexes Ishii. Neutralizer on Moriarty! Ishii breaks it up at two. Sliding lariat to Moriarty but Claudio pulls Ishii out, connects with a sliding European uppercut, and he gets the pin!
Winner: Claudio Castagnoli
Rating: ***1/4. Again, the commercial break timing annoyed me and this could have gotten some more time, but what we got was good.
Leila Gray has seemingly joined Top Flight, and MxM aren’t exactly impressed.
Match #5. Thunder Rosa vs. Taya Valkyrie w/ Johnny TV
Johnny provides a distraction early and Taya is in control. Rosa ducks underneath and sends Taya into the corner. Pair of double knees in the corner and a sliding lariat force Taya to reassess and roll outside. Rosa follows and throws Taya into the guardrail as we go to commercial. Back from break with a dropkick in the middle of the ring and a dropkick on the bottom rope that gets two. Taya rolls outside again and Johnny TV stands in the way of Rosa attacking, allowing Taya to spear her on the floor. Back in the ring, mat return by Taya. Thunder trips the feet out, rolls over Taya’s back, and locks in the Cobra Clutch/Camel Clutch combo forcing the fast tap.
Winner: Thunder Rosa
Rating: *3/4. There really wasn’t a lot here, and that’s about all I can say.
After the match, Thunder Rosa calls Deonna Purrazzo out for yet another match… a Texas Bullrope Match. Deonna accepts.
Match #6. Mark Briscoe, Darby Allin, & FTR vs. The Beast Mortos, & The Undisputed Kingdom
Dax and Strong start, as Strong lays in some solid chops in the corner. Dax blocks a hip toss and settles for a shoulder block. Arm drag by Dax and we reset. Darby arm drags Taven and everything breaks loose. Mortos is here with a huge headbutt to Dax and one to Darby as Mark Briscoe tries to fight him, but the referee stops it. Strong knees Cash in the back and hits a big Olympic Slam, before rolling him to the outside where everyone puts the boots to him. Bennett in now with a brainbuster to Cash. Two count. Strong clears the apron and Cash has no one to tag. Darby reaches in but Bennett flies in and sends Darby to the floor with a Russian Leg Sweep off the apron! Briscoe gets the tag and its Redneck Kung Fu to everyone. Single leg dropkick in the corner by Briscoe takes out Mortos. Hard right hand to Taven and a Blockbuster off the apron takes out Mortos! Mortos with a twisting tornillo to the outside and a cannonball to Dax inside the ring in the corner. Mortos heads up top for a senton and drills it! Strong gets the tag and Dax is in trouble. Double clothesline in the middle of the ring and everyone is down. Bennett tries to clear the apron of FTR and plants Briscoe on the apron with a DVD. Just the Tip to Briscoe by Taven. Lungblower by Strong and a Frog Splash by Mortos only get a two on Dax. Spinebuster by Dax to Mortos! Darby gets the hot tag and it’s a double coffin splash to The Kingdom. Taven accidentally splashes Strong in the corner. Double boots to Taven and a running Code Red to Strong! Two count. Superkick by Taven to Cash. Mortos and Briscoe fight on the outside as Darby is in trouble. Boston Bayonet, Kick of the King, and a Sick Kick to Darby and he’s still out at two. Kingdom look for a spike piledriver but Darby cradles for a two count. Blind tag by Dax but Kingdom want the spike piledriver again. Darby sends Bennett into Taven on the top and follows with a shotgun dropkick. Double suicide dives by Darby and Cash! Cannonball off the apron by Briscoe to Bennett. Powerplex and a Froggy Bow to Taven. Coffin Drop off the top! One, two, three.
Winners: Mark Briscoe, Darby Allin, & FTR
Rating: ***3/4. Throw some of your best wrestlers in an eight-man tag and give them twenty-minutes, and you’ll see what happens. Fun main event here with a lot of subplots and Mortos doing Mortos things.
Dax grabs the mic and he loves pro wrestling. He loves AEW, too, and this is the heart and soul of AEW. Wednesday, Saturday, it doesn’t matter…
Wait, here’s The Acclaimed.
Caster doesn’t agree with the “heart and soul” comment. Where was FTR when The Acclaimed was fighting the Young Bucks, and FTR isn’t good enough to be on the show without their buddy Darby. Bowens said he stabbed a man with scissors for this company, and he doesn’t give an S about the legacy of FTR. The Acclaimed are homegrown and the heart and soul of AEW… everyone loves The Acclaimed. The scoreboard reads Acclaimed 1, FTR, 0. Nut up, or shut up… and we’ve got a pull apart brawl to end the show.
Final Thoughts: Lots of wrestling, and way bigger names than we saw on Rampage, as per my gripes. It seems like the matches we saw tonight all are building towards All In, and there was a rhyme and reason for everyone. Five matches on a two-hour show, by the way, makes for some great pacing. 7.5/10.Â
