Kurt Angle reflects on one of his more serious pro wrestling personas.
The Olympic Gold Medal winner spoke about his ‘Wrestling Machine’ gimmick during the latest edition of his podcast, where he recalled a conversation he had with Vince McMahon that prompted him to shift his gears and stop doing funny stuff.
I came up with it. Vince McMahon came to me and said, ‘Listen, we need to stop doing the funny stuff. I want you to be taken more seriously.’ I said, ‘Yeah, that’s fine. What do you want from me?’ He said, ‘I just want a really intense Kurt Angle.’ I said, ‘How about The Wrestling Machine?’ He said, ‘That’s a good idea.’ So that’s how it all started.
Angle says that gimmick worked really well, especially since it was right at the beginning of his brief ECW run. He reminds listeners that he would be out of WWE shortly after the creation of the ‘Wrestling Machine.’
It was my idea, and I ran with it. Yeah, it worked out really well. Unfortunately, it didn’t last that long because I wasn’t in WWE long after that, but for the very beginning in ECW, it worked.
Elsewhere on is podcast, Angle spoke about fellow WWE legend Randy Orton and how The Viper is slowly recovering from his lingering back injuries. You can read about that here.
