The tournament’s format and structure was slightly different this year: 4 blocks, 8 wrestlers per block, 2 progress out into the Quarter Finals and a knockout format from there. No time-limit for the knockout matches as there must be a winner.

Kazuchika Okada topping B Block with just the one loss to the hands of Will Ospreay, whilst Tetsuya Naito finished top of D Block after battling his way back from a first day defeat to Jeff Cobb.

With that explained, let’s proclaim this year’s “Born in the ring!” tournament slogan and get to these results.

Kazuchika Okada vs Tetsuya Naito

What an incredible atmosphere the Ryogoku Kokugikan crowd created for this match. A sea of black and red in support of Naito as he faced the unbeatable G1 force of Okada. Both men just standing still and soaking in the atmosphere at the ring of the bell.

A slow start feeling each other out, Naito having a short spell of control before kicking things up into one of his patented flashes of injection. Holding his fist up into the air as he lay tranquillo, rolling out as soon as Okada entered back into the ring. Slowing the pace right back down to maintain that control once again.

Merciless Okada absolutely spiking Naito on the apron with a DDT, landing the man vertical as he crashed down to the floor. Kazu changing his mind about the count out and sliding ringside to whip the damaged chap into the barricade. Okay, now we’re good for the count.

Back in the ring and right back on the dome Naito crashes, Okada spiking once again with a DDT. Red Shoes ref refusing to count with Kazu lazily planting a foot on his opponent’s chest for a pin.

Naito fighting back and fully kicking up the pace as the two charge bouncing off the ropes, the LIJ leader crashing The Rainmaker’s neck down onto his knee and gaining control once again. The tranquilo one upping the intensity with a string of neck targeting viciousness, showing Okada he can be just as merciless when necessary.

Okada’s dropkick even countered, Naito refusing to go down to the outside as he’s the one take advantage and send the money man crashing to the outside. Now it’s his turn to make him pay for his barricade whipping sins, draping Okada over the steel gate and dropping him back first to tweak the neck.

More wear n’ tear in the ring as Naito leg trapped his opponent and made him expend energy crawling to the ropes. The 4-time G1 winner fighting back with a flash, it taking both men a while to get back to their feet after. However, with the dropkick to the corner crashing Naito down to outside, the match swung into that next gear.

Naito countering Okada’s whip and crashing the man into the barricade with a smile as the “20 minutes passed” call was made. The tranquilo man perhaps soaking it in a bit too much, as Uncle Kazu suddenly popped up and crashed him down onto the head again with Tombstone to Piledrive him ringside.

Back in the ring with a high-angle Suplex, kicking up that roar with a Spinning Rainmaker. Naito’s rebound back into action off the ropes dropkicked right to hell. However, Okada realises the man looks out of it and ref Umino starts counting instead.

Naito looking loopy as he staggers to his feet to duel with Okada, The Rainmaker’s forearms met with a spit to the face. Kazu going to answer, but the ungovernable one flashes into a DDT Spinning off the ropes. This time it was Okada’s turn to get spiked on the head, Naito following up with stiff elbows to the neck.

Kazu almost mocking as he asked Naito for more, Senior Tranquilo obliging, whilst also upping the ante a tad by taking him up to the corner and nailing a Frankensteiner. Rolling into an Indian Choke to drain Okada in the middle of the ring, forcing him to expend more energy. The clock closing in on 30 minutes as he followed up with the Esperanza DDT.

Destino set up but cut off, Okada’s Landslide also halted as he crashed down via a DDT reversal. Naito Brainbustering the lad to hell, the kick out calling for the Stardust Press! He missed it last night, but can he nail the move tonight? Nope.

The match swinging again as Okada nailed the Shotgun Dropkick to crash his opponent into the corner, going to follow up with a Rainmaker and instead sending us into one white hot flash of a flow. Both men ducking, reversing and countering at such an incredible pace.

Destino stopped, Rainmaker ducked under, the Spinning DDT off the ropes instead cradling just like how Naito beat ZSJ. Kick outs galore as the pace of reversal just kicked up and up and up. Calling every move would be a disservice to the pace, just believe me that the fervor of the crowd was absolutely fitting of the Rainmaker and Destino cancelling flow.

Okada nailing Landslide and seemingly setting up a Rainmaker Lariat, only for Naito duck under hit a flash Destino to a near fall. Taking us into an even quicker flow of both men simply going for their finishing blow, a lightning flash in a storm of offence.

In the end Naito ducking the Rainmaker to quickly rotate round into a Destino, quickly staggering to his feet to nail the move yet again and end the G1 streak of Kazuchika Okada.

G1 Climax 33 Winner:

Tetsuya Naito

Naito presented with the trophy and Masahiro Chono hands over the G1 flag for him to wave, the tranquilo one getting the legend to raise his fist with him as the pose for the cameras.

The rest of Los Ingobernables de Japon out to celebrate with him, Naito given the mic to talk as the victor. Saying thank you to fans for helping make this G1 so special.

Making a call back to his first G1 win a decade ago and calling himself “shuyaku” (lead actor, saying that he’s the star and focal point of this company). It wasn’t true at all 10 years ago, but now there’s no doubting the fact.

LIJ all raising their fists up together in the ring. Naito’s music blasting as the Ryogoku Kokugikan crowd chanted his name.
